josh, tell the truth: did you start playing dead cells just because it sounds like dead souls

a game so difficult, it doesn't exist

i call it dud cells

ciderpress, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 20:57 (three years ago) link

Honestly I had no idea there was any relationship besides the two titles. But whenever the game came out (last year?) I know it got lots of good reviews and year-end notices, and that it was one of those games that developers kept, well, developing, so it seemed like a potentially good value and added it to my list for when it went on sale. Like I said before, I've never played any of the usual rogue likes, and this one I saw specifically referred to as a roguelike that gets right what a lot of them get wrong, so while I had avoided the ones I mentioned before (Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Spelunky; I did buy Death Road to Canada and Darkwood, the former I played once, the latter not yet) this one was intriguing enough to take the plunge. I'd also been looking for the occasional good Switch game to pick up between epic PS4 games, which I can also only play on the TV, which is to say, when the TV is not in use by anyone else.

have been playing a lot of 'president' from the clubhouse games pack in btwn work/clients. always my favorite card game, very happy to have an actually deece version you can play super quick rounds of at a whim. to me that's worth the 40 bux right there, and then there are 50 other games??!? thx nintendo!

lumen (esby), Thursday, 2 July 2020 03:13 (three years ago) link

do most of the Clubhouse games have online play?

Nhex, Thursday, 2 July 2020 03:35 (three years ago) link

not 100% sure about that as I've just been playing against the computer... but judging from the games menus I think they probably all do yeah

It probably doesn't matter. I am in the middle of the world's slowest playthrough of DQXI.

No no I am

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 16:39 (three years ago) link

Actually probably not since I’ve taken the whole week off and have no plans other than playing DQXI, but I bet I end up taking more hours to finish than everyone else

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 16:41 (three years ago) link

I just finished up the horse race and a party member finally died in a desert battle. Sometimes, I'll spend a whole session on the forge.

a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:23 (three years ago) link

I am still a few levels away from maxing out (at 20) the levels of my party in the DQXI demo - beat that, losers.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 20 July 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

is dqxi really light and stupid? i think i might be into it. howlongtobeat.com says main + extras = ~ 87½ Hours

i started playing witcher 3 in march. i'm still not done, and i'm not being a completionist. i'm at 178 hours, and there are hours and hours left of DLC left. i didn't even play fucking gwent.

i need a follow-up that's big and absorbing, but not filled with ~ evil ~ and horrible load times.

rb (soda), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

ps i have never played dragon quest

rb (soda), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

if youre looking at the switch version there's a demo that includes the first several hours of the game and your progress carries over if you buy the real thing

ciderpress, Monday, 20 July 2020 19:13 (three years ago) link

this looks potentially good!

for some reason they showed it on the Japanese direct but not the North American one. action-platform-farmer-rpg!

one of the major upsides of digital distribution is that getting games that would never show up in america hinges primarily on localization costs... maybe we get that in 2021?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 21:29 (three years ago) link

oh shit it IS coming out here and oh MORE shit it's xseed! yeah, that looks like a purchase to me.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 21:30 (three years ago) link

yeah, it's odd they didn't include it in the NA direct because it's getting released here first!

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 July 2020 21:51 (three years ago) link

that game's been in development for a while, i played a demo of it at pax last year. its nice

Is paper mario good?

― a morley steve vai bad horsie what? (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, July 20, 2020 11:30 AM

I’ve been wondering this myself. The battle system could be really clever if done right but I fear it’s just some dumb bullshit. I think a bad Paper Mario game would really bum me out.

trapped out the barndo (crüt), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:22 (three years ago) link

However according to most Paper Mario fans it seems there hasn’t been a good entry since the GameCube one.

Evan, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:47 (three years ago) link

That's what I've been hearing as well. Still if this gets enough positive notice I'll give it a try. Hearing more mixed reactions though

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link

tbh i haven't played one since the N64

trapped out the barndo (crüt), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:53 (three years ago) link

The GameCube entry was great, if you have a means to play it

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:55 (three years ago) link

the first two paper mario games are proper JRPGs with levels, itemization, party members, etc, then they decided to step down all the RPG elements and turn them into adventure games, with mixed results. this is the fourth one of the latter type and it sounds like it might be the best but it's still not gonna satisfy people who want the full-on RPG stuff

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 02:02 (three years ago) link

Anyone pick up "Carrion?" Game looks pretty cool, and probably ideal for Switch (which isn't getting much use from me these days, tbh).

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 27 July 2020 16:48 (three years ago) link

my Switch is now a dedicated Tetris 99 device

lukas, Monday, 27 July 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

Carrion looks super dope. Will get around to buying it someday

Nhex, Monday, 27 July 2020 18:32 (three years ago) link

carrion looks a bit like Shadow Complex, which I loved

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 27 July 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

Yeah Carrion's on my "wait for a sale" list

cwkiii, Saturday, 1 August 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link

just played a little carrion and it seems pretty fun. moving around feels good and the the sound design is gross. chewing up dudes is satisfying but hopefully it's only a couple hours long as idk if i want to do like 10 hours of it.

also loaded up panzer paladin, also fun with terrific visuals and music.

they are great fun

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 21:21 (three years ago) link

I never played this before, either, but ... $60 for an 8-year old Wii-U game? That until this announcement was apparently priced at $20 on the Wii-U shop? I can't pretend to understand Nintendo, but I think it's kinda sad that there are handful of brand new titles I want to get for my end of life PS4, two of them PS4 exclusives, but it's been months since there's been a first party title I wanted to get for my Switch and nothing concrete to look forward to, either, beyond the long teased promise of Metroid 4 and a BotW sequel.

Fun fact: while my kids never want to play Smash Bros., when we did they would often make me play as the Pikmin guy as a sort of handicap.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

the price of street fighter 2 turbo was $69.99 (or $79.99?) in mid-90s dollars

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:10 (three years ago) link

At least Nintendo has been consistent, then. Maybe Pikmin 3 is underpriced. Do I hear $80? $100?

Seriously, though, if a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, which was reportedly made for between $80 and $100 million, can be sold for $30 (even if on sale) two years after release, then Nintendo can do better than $60 for a spiffed-up port of an 8-year old game. For that matter, it's not like Nintendo titles get much in the way of sales or discounts, either. But hey, I'm not going to buy it, so no worries, Nintendo. You do you.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:20 (three years ago) link

earthbound was like $80 in 1995 yeah. part of why it flopped. the $60 standard didnt really get established until the late 90s

ciderpress, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link

Anyway, it's really not a matter of what things cost 20 years ago, isn't a better comparison what competitors charge today?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link

who are the competitors for pikmin?
