macs will now properly run iOS apps. woah

hmmm. depends on how the app is designed, right? even something as basic as a swipe gesture is going to be annoying if you use a mouse.

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:20 (three years ago) link

(I know you meant something different by "properly" I'm just leery of running handheld apps on a desktop)

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:23 (three years ago) link

they did completely breeze past the swipeyness, but modern iPad OS lets you use an external pointing device with a cursor to swipe, so I'm assuming anything that supports that is good

...I proclaim as I type on an iPad with a touchpad

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 22 June 2020 20:45 (three years ago) link

and of course laptops are very swipey now

touchpads on apple laptops remain excellent imo

Sorry, I was unnecessarily romananizing. I mean it's finally gone from 10 to 11.

the X always stood for 10!

Mac OS X -> OS X (with 10.8) -> macOS (with 10.12 aka Sierra)

it always seemed dumb to put the X along with 10.whatever because “Mac oh ess ten, ten point one” didn’t quite roll off the tongue but the Roman numeral X looked cool I guess

a return to sanity, even if major version updates now apparently mean “we’re switching architectures”

solo scampito (mh), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 00:16 (three years ago) link

And so it comes full circle, my first computer was and acorn electron and now my Mac architecture will be descended from an Acorn chip. Although not until V2 of the hardware comes, mind you it basically means whatever computer I have will be an iPad under the hood.

no official word about the order in which the various mac lines will get ARMs right?

normally i'd assume MBP and iMac first but with the reduced power consumption ... maybe MBA?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 05:14 (three years ago) link

11 or 12 inch zero pound laptop would be ideal

all cats are beautiful (silby), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 05:45 (three years ago) link

mba seems a good fit, sounds like imac and mbp will be first

pedant in me is irritated at headlines implying apple has released a mac mini with the new architecture when it’s a dev kit that apple will recall at the end, it’s invite-only, and it’s not production hardware

solo scampito (mh), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

if they made an MBA with a touchscreen to accompany the newfound iPadOS app capability then I would probably buy one immediately.

I dunno it's kinda uncomfortable to hold your arm up to touch the screen.

Whatever the term is for the Yoga-type laptops that can fold alway their keyboards, I want one of those with macOS. MacBook-sized.

stet, Thursday, 25 June 2020 22:21 (three years ago) link

I really really like my ipad pro, and basically just want it to have a slightly better processor, a real keyboard, and to stand up by itself. I want to keep the touchscreen but I also want a touchpad for more precision when using certain apps

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Friday, 26 June 2020 01:34 (three years ago) link

Touchscreens on phones and tablets: reassuringly solid glass (or glass-ish), no flex, can obviously withstand any amount of jabbing, swiping and smearing. Often water-resistant. Easy to clean.
Touchscreens on laptops (in my limited experience): I feel like I'm ruining the screen.

I guess it would make laptops unacceptably heavy to install the same sort of display surface as a tablet? I dunno, maybe they're better now.

GF has a Lenovo Yoga 360. She very gingerly brushes the screen to select/scroll, mostly uses the trackpad and has never flipped it all the way over. I'm not sure we quite believe we won't break it :)

Michael Jones, Friday, 26 June 2020 09:45 (three years ago) link

that seems oddly sexual but hey it’s the Apple thread and Lenovo called their thing a Yoga so all bets are off

Am I the only one who, when upgrading to a new phone or machine, just leaves it 'Mac-Mini-2' or 'iPhone (2)' out of superstition and/or a belief that attempting to fix it will be far more trouble than it's worth, yet still allowing it to bug them every time they see it??

no

I started listening for the home server discussion. I want to get a nas but the guy who has one (instead of like a Mac mini) is obviously an idiot which makes me doubt my own judgment haha

if you’re going to use the functionality that automatically prompts you to share wifi passwords with friends, it seems like it’s limited to about five feet. so lean in for a sec, if you’re in a yard with wifi

I was trying to figure out how to do it manually and finally it just jumped up when I went to grab a drink from the center of our circle

three weeks pass...

Does anyone have a car with Carplay? Any good? It's one of the factors in our car buying decision (basic trim vs next level up one of the upgrades is carplay).

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 13 August 2020 20:37 (three years ago) link

i don't know how much i'd pay for it if it wasn't included as standard, but it is great for navigation. waaaay better (and feels safer) than using your phone. other than that, i don't get a ton out of it that i don't get out of a bluetooth connection.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 13 August 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

I’ve used it on rentals and it’s much better (and simpler) than the UI on any car with a dashboard screen I’ve used otherwise. I’d make sure it’s a vehicle that has a screen close enough that’s meant to be reached out and tapped safely — one loaner from a dealer when my car was being serviced had a touchpad thing in the center console that was trying to be too fancy, and I think the distance to screen was part of the decision

solo scampito (mh), Friday, 14 August 2020 00:18 (three years ago) link

Definitely an improvement on using a suction cup / phone on the inside of the windshield for navigation. Voice calling works well and I think it refuses to deliver texts while driving which is good.

calstars, Friday, 14 August 2020 00:26 (three years ago) link

i think carplay is pretty darn good although it can get a little flakey at times (random blank screens, stuff just suddenly not working). i use spotify, waze, and the apple podcast app. texting using siri is also nice if you just need to respond quickly to a text.

call all destroyer, Friday, 14 August 2020 00:35 (three years ago) link

Same. I don’t have it in my car, but the rentals I’ve used with CarPlay have been great when they worked, but had a bunch of bugs and disconnect issues. Could have been overworked USB jacks though.

DJI, Friday, 14 August 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

The texts are read aloud! I think iOS is getting this as an option, but AirPods also do this now. It works reasonably well.

solo scampito (mh), Friday, 14 August 2020 03:34 (three years ago) link

Hmm. Does sound nice but I don’t know if there are enough other features on the stepped up trim that I care about to make it worth the extra 2500 or so.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 14 August 2020 03:38 (three years ago) link

I don’t think I care about most of these much

Heated Front Seats
One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature
7-inch Display Audio with High-Resolution Electrostatic Touchscreen
Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
Customizable Feature Settings and Compass
Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
180-Watt Audio System with 6 Speakers
Sirius XM® Radio
HD Radio™
HondaLink®
Blind Spot Information System (BSI) with Cross Traffic Monitor

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 14 August 2020 03:39 (three years ago) link

I was going to say some upgrades are worth it on cheaper cars but I think I know what you’re playing at and, yeah

solo scampito (mh), Friday, 14 August 2020 03:40 (three years ago) link

on second thought, that looks like a good trim package

specifically the blind spot package (safety!), heated seats/moonroof (comfort) and six speaker system

I would assume you’re going above the base level upholstery which I have decided is good after having cloth seats that never cleaned up well and tore

solo scampito (mh), Friday, 14 August 2020 03:43 (three years ago) link

never discount the value of a toasty butt

Nhex, Friday, 14 August 2020 04:40 (three years ago) link

yeah the BSI, heated seats and airplay are the best things about that package. the BSI is the big deal though.

is "hondalink" a thing where you can use an app to start the car? that is extremely handy if you're dealing with extreme temperatures and kids.

i don't know if it's worth $2500, but unless you keep the car until it has a resale value of $0, it's not actually going to cost you $2500.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 14 August 2020 06:14 (three years ago) link

I so miss the days when optional equipment was sold a la carte rather than in packages or "trim levels", so I didn't have to spend thousands on crap I don't want, or worse would rather not have, just to get a few crucial items. Honda has long been one of the worst offenders in this regard.

Anyway Carplay is totally worth having, especially for beaming the navigation maps to the dashboard screen. Some new cars (and replacement head units for old cars) have wireless Carplay which is more convenient than the kind that makes you plug in a USB cable, especially the slow-charging old USB-A type.
