anyone check out the recent christian lee hutson album that phoebe produced? sounding really nice to me today, and likely will to you too if your favorite song of punisher is 'savior complex'.

The sound on this is really weird in general, like everything is slushed together in the mix and backgrounded and then her voice is absolutely front-and-centre and crystal clear over it all.

Feel like this is really what's making me not grasp onto this album too. I like a lot of parts of it but not the whole. I find it too distant and ethereal (or smushy) sonically and even with repeated listens that isn't changing.

Definitely feel that's the point of the production style too. Maybe it'll hit me differently at some point in the future.

i feel that all this heavy-handed studio production is impeding her and it's such a shame. the new bright eyes record is the same. i used to love listening to BE for mogis' creative production, and it's completely absent from their new songs, it all just sounds distorted and sterile. though phoebe's production is more creative... the arrangements for ICU are top.

in her 'what's in my bag' ameoba records episode she talks about liking elliott's 'new moon' bc of how stripped down it is... i'd like to hear her make a record with just a four track, too.

"Alps" was pretty stripped down and she's said in interviews she specifically wanted something different for this one.

xp people will just think you're obsessed with donnie darko. this album rules.

I keep listening to it despite initial reservations about the sonics, so who knows, maybe it could be this year’s Field Day.

Garden Song does sound muddled and weird but it still brings tears to my eyes when the harmonies start.

give Phoebe credit for attacking this weird promotional environment with just enough humor and creativity to stand out from the rest of the livestreams.

the "tour" of her house, that cute A-for-effort Corden performance, the commitment to the pajamas ... it's all small stuff, but it's something!

This would have been a top 3 album for me back in 2002.

I actually love the production on this album. It's kind of ethereal, I described it to a friend as dream-folk. I like that it gets loud a few places too.

I want to love "Kyoto," but the Broken Social Scene horns (and, I guess, the "mix" generally) just do NOT do it for me. The song turns to mush at the chorus, when it should stay tight and focused. Same with "Chinese Satellite" (my 2nd-fave track), and its strings / sound effects... the production feels busy and overdone, clouding the songs rather than allowing them to shine on their own.

punisher is the album of the year

the year isn't over, but i feel like i can call it. "i know the end" feels elegiac, resigned, until about 4:35 when there is a burst of new life. not triumphant, but it's life, and when there's life there is hope.

some of these verses feel like things i've had memorized for years. they have "the force of inevitability"

it's the album I've listened to the most this year.

i think Punisher is terrific but still (so far) think Stranger in the Alps is better. i wouldn't mind if that changes in the future, though.

The lyrics to the title track are so good, I want to quote them all.

that song is about Elliott Smith; as someone who saw probably every show Elliott Smith ever played in the Bay Are area and for whom his music was incredibly important for a few years there, I found that song really touching and effective. While my wife was in grad school with lots of people 10-12 years younger than her, several of them were pretty freaked out we'd seen him perform so many times; I wasn't even really aware he had such a strong legacy with people who weren't old enough to listen to him while he was still putting out music.

wonder if this was shot after COVID; the ending with the empty stadium and the way people are standing apart makes me think so, but who knows.

for real, great video but the ending with the kissing and screaming into an elderly woman's face was pretty o_O considering the circumstances. along with the transatlantic trip, she seems entirely too cavalier about this pandemic thing.
