I agree from a developer standpoint and as someone who generally uses new apps, but the #1 complaint for most people is “my program that I bought no longer works and I don’t know why”

kind of a hard balance between “things should just keep working” and “apps need to be updated to be modern in regards to platform/security/etc”

I’m generally on board with the second because oh boy remember what a mess Windows became when everyone wanted to run their apps from eons ago on every new Windows version

it's cool that we can so easily run dos programs on mac os though.

i feel like i only just got used to intel, my last computer still had unrunnable powerpc binaries on it somewhere

this has definitely become less of an issue over time now that virtualization and emulation have gotten better!

and, iirc, now macs have been on intel longer than they were on powerpc

yeah but powerpc didn't feel like going over to the ENEMY it felt like a cool new superboost

ah yes, the weird apple cult thing where processors from motorola/ibm (!) were magic

there were some genuine perks of powerpc at the time but the idea that any component that deviated from standard Windows boxes was part of the “apple magic” was always a weird take imo

hmmm. depends on how the app is designed, right? even something as basic as a swipe gesture is going to be annoying if you use a mouse.

(I know you meant something different by "properly" I'm just leery of running handheld apps on a desktop)

they did completely breeze past the swipeyness, but modern iPad OS lets you use an external pointing device with a cursor to swipe, so I'm assuming anything that supports that is good

Mac OS X -> OS X (with 10.8) -> macOS (with 10.12 aka Sierra)

it always seemed dumb to put the X along with 10.whatever because “Mac oh ess ten, ten point one” didn’t quite roll off the tongue but the Roman numeral X looked cool I guess

a return to sanity, even if major version updates now apparently mean “we’re switching architectures”

And so it comes full circle, my first computer was and acorn electron and now my Mac architecture will be descended from an Acorn chip. Although not until V2 of the hardware comes, mind you it basically means whatever computer I have will be an iPad under the hood.

normally i'd assume MBP and iMac first but with the reduced power consumption ... maybe MBA?

11 or 12 inch zero pound laptop would be ideal

pedant in me is irritated at headlines implying apple has released a mac mini with the new architecture when it’s a dev kit that apple will recall at the end, it’s invite-only, and it’s not production hardware

if they made an MBA with a touchscreen to accompany the newfound iPadOS app capability then I would probably buy one immediately.

Whatever the term is for the Yoga-type laptops that can fold alway their keyboards, I want one of those with macOS. MacBook-sized.

I really really like my ipad pro, and basically just want it to have a slightly better processor, a real keyboard, and to stand up by itself. I want to keep the touchscreen but I also want a touchpad for more precision when using certain apps

Touchscreens on phones and tablets: reassuringly solid glass (or glass-ish), no flex, can obviously withstand any amount of jabbing, swiping and smearing. Often water-resistant. Easy to clean.
Touchscreens on laptops (in my limited experience): I feel like I'm ruining the screen.

I guess it would make laptops unacceptably heavy to install the same sort of display surface as a tablet? I dunno, maybe they're better now.

GF has a Lenovo Yoga 360. She very gingerly brushes the screen to select/scroll, mostly uses the trackpad and has never flipped it all the way over. I'm not sure we quite believe we won't break it :)
