I watched 3.0 earlier this year. Is there a "standard" fan theory over what happens? I am guessing that the god in the abyss was actually Lilith, NERV having tricked Kaworu into thinking it was Adam (by switching the bodies and decapitating Lilith themselves), Kaworu then tricking Shinji into thinking it was Lilith (which it actually was). Very Princess Bride cup game.

i know ppl love it 2.0 turning into a dating sim about halfway through is just the pits for me. making 3.0 about the fallout of shinji being a hero at the end of 2.0 was the correct artistic decision

the shinji/rei/asuka dynamic in the show is very weird and subtle and develops naturally over a long period of time so of course it can't be replicated in the movie, i just wish it hadn't been replaced with everyone trying to cook a meal for shinji bc they have a huge crush on him

on someone's recommendation I watched Devilman Crybaby which was so "poor man's Eva" by the end I almost couldn't believe it (I also hated the animation style)

i have heard of yet not watched that one but i hate most post-eva anime to begin with

the funniest thing i read recently was utena director ikuhara’s one story suggestion to anno for eva

I watched this series for the first time ever this year (thanks Netflix). The way people talk/meme about it on the internet, I expected some shallow annoying self-pitying sadboy shit. Instead I got the extremely unsettling/heartbreaking, and fairly nuanced (for what it is) show it actually is. I even once asked some friends "should I bother watching Eva?" and their reply was "nah, you're not missing much." Everybody was wrong! I guess the point of this post is "don't take heed of memes."

The Rei fancult is an interesting (disturbing) phenomena given that the whole idea behind her character (as I understood it) was that she kept getting her brainslate wiped before she could ever develop a sense of self/personality.

xp Nice. People find it so affecting, i think, that a lot of the reason for the sadboy meme junk is a bit of self trolling the fact that the carton made them feel stuff.

Besides re-watching a little of the show when it came out on Netflix, I've seen everything just once and it's such a mishmash in my head... which feels kind of appropriate. I couldn't tell you what happened in each movie or what bits of what contradict other bits. Looking forward to the eventual final movie and whatever the heck that's about

i know i'm on some very in character galaxy brain thinking here but everything about it really clicked this time... the piano duets, shinji walking through the abandoned and destroyed geofront, his entire conflict in the movie, which is that he's just stuck in a loop of trying to live up to the contradictory and contrapuntal moral imperatives from the adults in his life and the person he looks up to most (kaworu) bc he is unable to take responsibility for his own actions... feels potentially deeper and richer to me at this point in my life than eoe's depressive bummer that gets so deep it inverts into total dreamscape. also: the big battle in the first part of the movie which is largely just an excuse to see a ship turn into a badass airship. also: it's a total fuck you to the audience that enjoyed 2.0's nonstop fanservice and male fantasy???? bc all of the women in his life are now either indifferent to or furious at him for trying to rescue them???????? ugh i can think about it forever. also it's too gorgeous. the cgi in all the rebuilds is amazing but it's obviously peaking in 3.0

I'm revisiting the rebuilds (ok, I started at 2.22) and all the little hints in 2.22 that this is some kind of literal do-over / new cycle of reality are grin worthy

I definitely get where you're coming from brad but I can accept the new character dynamics a little better from that angle

not so much the marked increase in leering upskirt shots though

i am def more sensitive to eva becoming a harem anime than most

definitely if I were new to Eva I would find it very annoying

i also think people who haven't watched the first six episodes of eva 10000 times should watch 1.0, idk, it even affects me, someone who has seen the first six episodes of eva 1000 times. great emotional arc even if the new stuff is neither wildly nor radically new

it's funny how the rebuilds don't even really work as standalone movies..imo 2.22 and 3.33 are both more like "riffs" on the existing mythos than coherent films with a beginning/middle/end, and I can't imagine anyone who hasn't already seen the series and EoE getting much out of them other than the pretty images (of which there are a lot)

I haven't been tempted yet to watch anything after EoE. There's probably some merit to the Rebuilds, but I kinda get the sense that they're not the real deal.

if it's Anno and yer grandma on cel animation, it's the real deal
