I listened to a few tracks from that Danzig record, and it actually is kind of okay! but i also have a deep affection for Danzig's voice, and do impressions of him all the time lol.

I also want to say that David Guetta appropriating MLK Jr's "I Have A Dream" speech is about as horrifying and disgusting as the literal Nazi shit that was being talked about above it. Even if he was doing it for charity, it's completely despicable and without any redeeming qualities.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

i think it's safe to say it is the worst readily available music of 2020 and there's real competition!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

very much so. it also goes to show that Guetta doesn't know about the many excellent Detroit techno and Chicago house tracks made by Black people that sample the MLK speech quite effectively. either that or he doesn't care, and both cases are inexcusable.

Now Reese & Santonio? Play this at the next march, please.

at least it's a pretty concise and suitably grotesque encapsulation of the relationship between '''edm''' (aka dance music that white heterosexuals have learned is socially acceptable for them to enjoy) and blackness in general

honestly the industry would do well to move on from that especially unfortunate phase in the marketing of dance music with all due haste. luckily this should not be particularly difficult to do in the united states, since most '''edm''' now struggles tremendously in that market and the small number of success stories are in the 'future-nostalgia' mold which openly takes abundant cues from more inclusive eras in dance music's history. hopefully soon we will all stop being terrorized in restaurants by sedated deep house covers of iconic hits by black artists with whispered anonymous vocals

dyl, Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:33 (three years ago) link

you speak as if restaurants will exist in a few years

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:43 (three years ago) link

I confess to appropriating “edm” as a broad catchall to save myself from having to painstakingly apply increasingly detailed genre names in my iTunes library

I'm probably a bit biased because it was produced by the husband of a former co-worker I intensely dislike, but this is irredeemably awful:

man the Gorillaz "Song Machine" singles are all terrible huh

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 20 July 2020 19:36 (three years ago) link

I've only listened to Ep. 5, and while I detest the spoken intro and outro which I guess are, like, Gorillaz character development things (?!) which I care 0 about, I thought the song was fine, loved the bridge tbh. I appreciate that Damon has finally learned how to sing high without yelling

this was inspired by the especially farty and rinky-dink sounding Schoolboy Q collab (Q does fine)

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 14:40 (three years ago) link

Lol that's the one I'm talking about. I agree that it's pretty rinky-dink though and mostly just serves as a frame for Q to do his thing

knowing there are ppl, seemingly quite a number of ppl, who legit enjoy the music of 645AR make me feel older and less 'in touch' than I ever have before

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 10:25 (three years ago) link

I watched part of his “Yoga” video and now I like to say “it is what it is, it ain’t what it ain’t” in that cartoon mouse voice, but that’s a far cry from finding the music anything other than horrendous

It's just about being willing to say "This is music for children" and move on with one's life.

Music Has the Right to Children.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 14:32 (three years ago) link

I am loath to dismiss anything as "music for children" unless it's, like, explicitly actually for children. but it's definitely one of those (relatively rare, I hope!) times when my brain's instinctive response is to back away slowly in horror muttering "not for us...not for us..."

Brace yourselves for some hypotense-finger-on-the-pulse old man analysis: maybe 645AR is just a novelty act and 'Yoga' is this generation's 'I'm Too Sexy' idk.

From foreign lands…

Renaud's 'Corona Song', widely deemed to be the worst instance of French music to have come out this year in France (presumably because Guetta's George Floyd tribute doesn't scan as tone-deaf when you know next to nothing about MLK and American racial politics in general):

Finally, rock is back. One of the best rock songs I've heard in years! Great drum intro and awesome guitars. And great vocals is a given.
