I still can’t believe this show, particularly season 2, exists

Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2020 05:27 (three years ago) link

So good I had to post it twice

Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2020 05:28 (three years ago) link

I’ve been rewatching for the first time since it aired too and really enjoying the bluntly askew ncisisms throughout season one

Clay, Saturday, 20 June 2020 05:40 (three years ago) link

This is sadly prob not going to happen in a time zone where I’ll actually be awake but in case others are interested:

ok ignore my message, I’m actually already half asleep and just realised that that’s already recorded rather than a live thing. but looks exciting!

I noticed it's on Netflix. Did they restore the episode that originally got pulled? I've still never seen it.

the molly shannon one? it was included when the show was streaming on prime, can't imagine it's not there

i watched that one a week ago or so on netflix so yeah it's there

Clay, Friday, 26 June 2020 01:43 (three years ago) link

gotcha

one month passes...

I just started this now, because I'm playing Buffalo Bill in a filmed Shakespearean-era reimagined Silence (do not ask...).

I am fucking enthralled by everything about this show. I immersed so hard in it that when both my roommates randomly didn't come home for two nights without warning me...I was legit freaked out!

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 05:18 (three years ago) link

I'm in S2 right now right after Katz found his fucking basement, but that didn't give me chills anywhere near as much as Hannibal heartlessly reviving Crawford's wife, who lets out a pained "no...." upon realizing he brought her back

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 05:20 (three years ago) link

not having read the books (call me a fuckin' poseur idfc), I didn't realize the Garrett Jacob Hobbs thing came from the Red Dragon book (I only knew him as a throwaway reference in Manhunter).

I find myself having a blast figuring out Hannibal's motives. it's an interesting twist to have Will's discovery of Hannibal be this long, prolonged Cassandra-esque Greek tragedy as opposed to him just accidentally stumbling upon the fact during a series of visits to interview him about a patient he treated that was a victim of the Chesapeake ripper.

Will being arrested and on trial for murder didn't sit well with me at first (mostly because I figure he's going to be acquitted and returned to the field, based on what I've read about the show), and I just can't imagine him doing that.

was gonna watch another ep. debating whether to or not. i do have to sleep at some point. or do I?

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 05:28 (three years ago) link

I'm about 5 or 6 episodes into the first season and still on the fence about it. I get frustrated with the baddie of the week format that overwhelms the main storyline a lot of the time.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 23 August 2020 05:58 (three years ago) link

That will ... become less of a problem ;)

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 06:06 (three years ago) link

Don’t worry, the procedural format goes away eventually - it was really just bait to draw in your regular NBC weeknight viewer.

I love seeing people get into this show for the first time! it’s still incredible it ever got made.

Roz, Sunday, 23 August 2020 06:07 (three years ago) link

it really is

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 August 2020 06:27 (three years ago) link

agree with the complaints about Izzard upthread - he's theatrical when everybody else is doing television-level acting. it comes across like one of my least favorite bit characters from Sweeney Todd, Jonas Fogg, who has the most ridiculous dialogue, and in community theaters, is often played by people who are over the top and goofy.

Izzard's not exactly over the top, but his affected speech feels forced (not least due to the work of disguising an accent, which tbh, I wish he didn't do). he seems to be *trying* to come across as maniacal but it feels phony.

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 06:34 (three years ago) link

I thought Izzard was mostly ok, especially after I realized he was there as a way for the producers to Trojan horse Hopkins’ version of Hannibal into the show

3:10 to yur mom (voodoo chili), Sunday, 23 August 2020 11:57 (three years ago) link

izzard’s good imo. gets a lot of good scenes in the third season iirc

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 23 August 2020 12:34 (three years ago) link

his self-conscious, theatrical monstrousness contrasts perfectly with hannibal's subtlety

HOLY SHIT MIRIAM IS ALIVE!!!

i was surprised how much i enjoyed this, it snuck up on me while i was admiring mads mikkelsen. it helps that it gets better and better. beginning of series three now and the way it manages hallucinogenic spaces, memory spaces, and “reality” and the psychological interplay of people around Hannibal (and ofc with a great deal of opacity and uncertainty, Hannibal himself) is brilliant.

Fizzles, Sunday, 23 August 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

i admit that although a central feature of its expression some of the gore at the end of S2 got to me a bit. still, again, the series becomes quite artful in creating little dantean/infernal cells for people out of their demise.

Fizzles, Sunday, 23 August 2020 15:56 (three years ago) link

the final season is loopy beyond belief and fumbles into more of a fever dream than anything else but boy is it good

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 23 August 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

the only thing that bugs me, and it's not a major deterrent, is some of the problem I had with early Dexter - these people recklessly bounce from presumed suspect to other presumed suspect way too easily, for the Chesapeake Ripper, like dogs following a bouncing ball. Too easily manipulated.

the other thing that bugged me (again, minor) is if Hannibal insisted on being investigated as a courtesy, you mean to tell me they didn't investigate his house and find his basement? Or did he move it to an offsite location? seems whatever was down there, uhh, probably wasn't easy to move

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 16:18 (three years ago) link

oh you'll get to the basement

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

uh, spoilers

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

btw, you have inspired me to schedule a rewatch of this shortly, partner is very much down.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:04 (three years ago) link

I started watching this this week and I’m ridiculously into it. Why did I take so long to watch it?!

What’s to say about this not already said upthread (haven’t read due to spoilers)? The casting is amazing, and Gillian Anderson in the most recent episode is such a treat. The show is camp in the proper ironic sense of the meaning. How many times does it do that thing where they’re investigating a murder where someone has had their organs taken for the dinner table and they’re like, in deadly seriousness, “what do you think, Hannibal?”

Also, that scene where he’s thumbing through his Rolodex for people to kill is hilarious.

Oh and I knew already this was a huge slash fandom, but honestly, can’t get over some of the content? “Did you just smell me?” I feel it’s only going to get much worse and the show clearly loves torturing Will Graham.

beef stannin’ (gyac), Friday, 28 August 2020 12:37 (three years ago) link

After all this praise I made myself give it another go and cried uncle after 8 or 9 episodes. Maybe I'm a disgusting savage, but it's just a gussied up Criminal Minds.

Anna Chlumsky is fantastic though. I CANNOT with the Will character. The food is fun. Lecter's suits were fun but they get samey. Izzard is not good

thanks for pointing out the sly humor, gyac. feel like that's an underrated part of the show.

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:36 (three years ago) link

rvw, if you never made it to the 2nd season, you just haven't seen the show yet.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link

arrgh okay! i'll finish S1 at 1.5x then

life is beauitul (rip van wanko), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

last few episodes of s1 are excellent iirc

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:47 (three years ago) link

for rvw: what happens is that they stop doing the "psychotic of the week" thing and instead turn the show into a much more complicated game of cat and mouse between everyone and hannibal that results in the phrase "murder husband" making a lot more sense. i kinda like the topsy-turvy OTT-ness of the procedural episodes but I totally get it if that's not your thing... it's secretly not the thing of the showrunners either! and every character that you are tired of gets written into the background; new guest stars are constantly popping out of the works. trust me, it gets VERY WEIRD and creative and even better filmed so if that's what you think is missing, just soldier through.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

It’s so camp! Like sometimes it feels like they’re daring you to laugh during discussion of a particular gruesome murder and it’s amazing.

beef stannin’ (gyac), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

Hannibal wearily shoving freshly prepped organs into his fridge like he’s unpacking an Ocado will never not be funny to me.

beef stannin’ (gyac), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

yeah lol, and mikkelsen leans into those moments, letting you know he's in on the joke with a slight facial tic.

i laught every time he hesitates when people ask him what meat they're eating

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:05 (three years ago) link

*laugh

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:05 (three years ago) link

HAMIBAL is also key to enjoyment of this show, though you want to wait to avoid spoiler watching until you get to episode 3 to view in tandem

*season 3!!!

but yes hamibal is pure brilliance. obviously goofy on its face, but it does seem to innately sense how these characters relate to one another.

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

I binged watch a lot of Criminal Minds before rewatching Hannibal, and even though they’re both set in the BAU, they are so different.

Notes on Scampo (tokyo rosemary), Friday, 28 August 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

points for not using "unsub" 40x/episode

life is beauitul (rip van wanko), Friday, 28 August 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

the monster of the week stuff in season 1 is ... not exactly a low point, but not what makes the show good.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 28 August 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

the big reveal that Hannibal is a theremin aficionado was probably my favorite moment so far

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 28 August 2020 17:23 (three years ago) link

I grew to appreciate the procedural format just because the show’s murderers of the week were so goddamn freakish. Never quite got over the mushroom people or the human cello.
