Given how widely it was shared I guess most folk will already have read Tommy Ga-Ken Wan's account of his experience in George Square on Sunday, but I think it's worth sharing in case anyone did miss it. I like his writing and he's an amazing photographer, for anyone who doesn't already know him: https://www.instagram.com/tgkwan/

It's a public post, but I'm not sure if non-fb users will be able to read it? I'll see if he's posted it anywhere else too in case not.

The Sub Club is in danger of closing and it would be a goddam tragedy if that happened. Bung them some cash here - https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/saveoursub

If you give them a grand you get free entry for life

paolo, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 07:48 (three years ago) link

Today, we are saying something we never thought we would have to say again - the good ship Sub Club is in danger of sinking!

We have faced many different trials and tribulations over the last 33 years, ranging from the infamous licensing curfew of the early 90’s to the building fire which forced the club’s closure in 1999 and led us to nomadic adventures, keeping the Subbie spirit alive in other venues until the fabled reopening in 2002.

We have faced countless other challenges over the years and are currently still fighting a long running and costly legal battle over noise issues arising from the grant of planning permission for a hotel development directly adjacent to the club, all of which has meant that the Sub Club has been very much a labour of love for all concerned for more than 3 decades. However, none of these situations hold a candle to the existential threat that the COVID-19 pandemic currently poses to the Sub Club, and indeed to Club Culture as a whole around the globe.

As lockdown is gradually lifted and some elements of the life we used to live slowly filter back in, what is abundantly clear is the fact that underground basement clubs will be amongst the very last things to reopen. We were the first spaces closed and we will be the last to open.

The level of UK Government support has fallen woefully short of what is required to protect the future of the Sub Club. We are very aware that many people are experiencing real financial difficulty, and for some the threat to their health and wellbeing is profound. We have had to think long and hard before reaching out to ask for your help. Nevertheless, if we want to Save Our Sub we find ourselves in a situation where we have to ask for your support.

What was the infamous licensing curfew of the early 90’s?

paolo, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 07:49 (three years ago) link

Asking again, @usikhushi. How much of your net worth are you donating to @SubClub? Sub Club staff are on unpaid leave while you're taking private jets to party with Peggy Gou only 2 days ago, but are still asking people to donate.

— Zab Mustefa (@ZabMustefa) July 7, 2020

Anyone got more background on this? The guys instagram no longer appears to have the shots referenced

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 08:20 (three years ago) link

There are some screenshots in this thread on twitter, plus a little further discussion...

if i was a director of Sub Club moaning about not being able to access the furlough scheme and appealing for public donations, I would probably not fill my insta feed with pics of me on private jets (or be a heir to one of Scotland's biggest fortunes 👀)

paolo, Glasgow put in place a bylaw whereby you had to be in a club by midnight, no-one was admitted after that.

That sounds a bit rubbish. And I did not know about this usikhusi character...

"Glasgow put in place a bylaw whereby you had to be in a club by midnight"

aka me in my early 20s, wanting to pay £5 instead of £8 for entry because I was a cheap student, not realising that extra drink probably cost the same anyway

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 09:27 (three years ago) link

Millionaire Subby director Usman Khushi has apologised for taking a private jet to hang out with Peggy Gou but hasn't said that he'll save the club himself, even though he totally could.

Yeah, we're okay, a little disappointed - Jen even had a job lined up (over in the other place) but they mailed her to say that they weren't going to be hiring her - it was "we want to offer you the job, we'll make it official by the end of the month" on the 5th of March, but obviously that's a decade ago by now.

It's possible that my words here could be taken out of context, which is that they got back in contact and (touch wood) we're moving up next month - unless Sturgeon does set up barricades on the main roads which, honestly, fair enough.

are you moving to glasgow or the other place, AF? I lost track

jim otm - it's getting better...... slightly..... and slowly......... the cycle super highway that's the site of the altercation above is actually pretty good (though unfinished). they need to put stuff like that all over the city (only other stretch, which is also good tbf, is on sauchiehall st)

||||||||, Monday, 13 July 2020 17:44 (three years ago) link

In the other place, I'm afraid - it's where Jen's job is, and it's also where my work's parent company (that I've been seconded to) has its main European office.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 13 July 2020 20:32 (three years ago) link

Today is a good day for my London-based Irish friends announcing their move north of the border - another mate of mine is due to rock up in Maryhill in a couple of weeks. Obviously allowing for barricades-on-the-border type shenanigans, but tbf, he's from Donegal, he's used to it.

Coming from London is about the only way to find drink prices acceptable in The Other Place, tbh.

I generally try to avoid posting anything just to shit on someone or something but there's a BBC Radio 4 Scotland evening topical comedy show, that consists of almost nothing but half assed jokes and fake laughter and you'd think it was made by people who didn't realize there is any other type of laughter. Like they've saw other people joking and laughing, didn't understand it but decided to mimic it on a radio show.

are you allowed/supposed to have tradesmen in your home? Tilers, plumbers etc. I'm doing work on someone's flat just now and will continue to do that (the owner has been away since before lockdown and won't be back for a few months) but was looking around for tilers, plumbers etc.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 11:49 (three years ago) link

Tradespeople and care providers
Workers can continue to go into other households to carry out work such as repairs, installations and deliveries.

Such visits should be subject to a risk assessment as well as ensuring that social distancing and correct wearing of masks is followed where appropriate.

I can get on my bus at Shawlands, ride it through East Ren and into East Kilbride, work 8 hrs in my shop with two colleagues as a few hundred strangers come through the door, get the same bus home and get food from Lidl on the way... but I can't have anyone sit in my front room. Hmm.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 12:21 (three years ago) link

local lockdown is a total shiter: bidie in's sister has tickets to come up (from london) for a visit in a couple of weeks. now no longer happening of course - swear one of the worst things about this year is the lack of things to look forward to...

learned lasagna (||||||||), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 19:28 (three years ago) link

Feart to even make plans now tbh. Will this affect the 21st party onimo?

stet, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

21st party is planned to be outdoors (15 people, 5 households), weather permitting. If the weather is bad there's no point even attempting anything as we're already a family of five over two households so we couldn't even allow e.g. girlfriends or grandparents under current guidelines.

I can get on my bus at Shawlands, ride it through East Ren and into East Kilbride, work 8 hrs in my shop with two colleagues as a few hundred strangers come through the door, get the same bus home and get food from Lidl on the way... but I can't have anyone sit in my front room. Hmm

I agree this looks like it makes no sense but it's down to most of those things being managed at reasonably low risk while bangers are having 20 man gaffs. It's not aimed at your responsible visitor, it's aimed at the bangers.

Thing is though, how does changing guidance affect people who ignore guidance? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

オニモ (onimo), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 23:33 (three years ago) link

I've been to the pub once and a restaurant once but I've been at work full-time in a retail space since lockdown was eased. Based on what I've seen of the public and how they've behaved, it really does feel like most people don't care about this anymore. The prevailing attitude seems to be that if we all wear masks we don't need to be using sanitised or social distancing. Even the bus is a nightmare as people sit where they want and slide off their masks. I'm not convinced I'm going to be any safer by the end of house parties - the people who have already taken the risks are still able to get out and about, to come into my shop or whatever, and there's only so much you can do to make people behave responsibly. When people break the guidelines you can tell them off, ask them to back away etc, but the damage is already done and the threat of infection cannot be undone. It feels like closing the gate after the horse has bolted.
