here's the full, 6 minute making of Push Upstairs video video in absolutely brutal video quality. Wondering where I even would've seen this back then... on a CD single? Anyway it's got cute interview bits.

i didn't realize Nylong Strung was a single. Nice video! They've got a daughter each on the track and video, is it?

"nylon strung" is the most beautiful song

― BradNelson, Thursday, March 17, 2016 5:39 AM

kinda feel like "open me up/i want to hold you laughing" is kind of an all time hyde lyric too, his best stuff has always seemed to use odd juxtaposition to communicate something emotionally direct

piano cover

Nylon Strung is the best track in that I would play it on a loop for a day and thoroughly enjoy it every time. Overall nice album. Would I buy a physical copy, yes.

considering that some part of my brain still thinks that all MK1 stuff "doesn't count", I'm pretty tickled by all these Underneath the Radar covers.

Oh, and when Googling I came across the video for the title track, which I had never seen before...

It's eightiesriffic!

Hey sic, could we get a summary of the tracks before it goes much further as the thread is getting hard to load.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

okay so one thing I've noticed when relistening to a lot of this stuff is that a lot of UW's music sounds propulsive, particularly the sequenced bass lines on tunes like Spoonman, Deep Arch, King of Snake, Mo Move, This Must be Drum Street, etc. etc. I don't know much about music theory but there's something about the note progressions that Rick uses that gives a bunch of their work the feeling of leaning forward. obviously KoS is famous for sampling Summer/Moroder but that aesthetic is all over their catalogue.

frogbs, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

It's probably not just this but he uses very swung rhythms a lot. There's also conversely an odd kind of thick static presence to things like Rez, something to do with the density of high frequency percussive elements, or a buried breakbeat. Maybe a mixture of the two is characteristic of their stuff.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:07 (three years ago) link

great list, MUPPP!

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

I noticed that about the Jumbo bassline, it's so short, and seemingly simple and repetitive but doesn't get even remotely boring. there's something special I can't quite articulate about how the last two notes are portamento'ed. masters of propulsion.

you're 45 minutes into an Underworld show and you think you recognise that bassline, but did it place they play it already or are you thinking of that other song, or are they mixing the two together, or was this something you weren't expecting to hear and

Sure I like their more mellow new tunes, but I still would absolutely kill to hear them do another total rockin' monster 12" banger like "Cowgirl" or "Cups" or "Spikee." Hell, NOBODY does totally rockin' monster 12" bangers anymore. Ah well.

Progressive House was to get itself a bad rep but ehatever you called it in 1993 it was a rocking good time, as Spikee still eminently demonstrates.

Better beat, better build, better internal tension, better lyrics, better everything

yes, I meant to say an instrumental has better lyrics than the version with lyrics because ultimately most of those lyrics are dumb

I love 8 Ball. Really great song and strangely very epic as well. One of my favorite 'walking around the city' songs.

― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, February 16, 2013 5:00 AM

Granted, a lot of my love for 8 Ball comes from how I still perceive it as the last truly great Underworld track. They've released some decent material since, but nothing that compares to their '90s output.

If they'd ended their run with 8 Ball, I wouldn't have minded at all.
