I mean, yeah conservative court is bad, conservatives are bad, but they also just upheld the clean water act two months ago, it's not like there is some neat and tidy plan to cover up environmental destruction with ""social progres""

You’re wrong man alive two things cannot be true at the same time

Think people also forget SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself. That obviously doesn't mean they don't, but RBG probably would have voted against legalizing abortion in Roe v Wade despite being pro-choice because she didn't feel the legal reasoning behind it was very strong.

Dig Dug the police (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link

SCOTUS aren't supposed to vote based on their personal feelings but the law itself.

The SCOTUS is not the source of either social progress or slash and burn capitalism. The law itself is written by Congress, so the SCOTUS interpreting the law 'correctly' does not negate the validity of the quote. The questionable part of the quote for me is whether social progress is truly a ploy conceived by capitalism as a means to distract society from its predations. I doubt it.

i remember when a boss i didn't like had a poster in her office of a cat like that and the caption "i can haz a cheesburger" or something. i knew that i wasn't going to like where the culture was headed.

I like the idea of this cat poster as a terrible harbinger, like some film set in 1933 Germany where someone catches their first glimpse of a swastika.

really doubt such a clear, linear thought process as "better dead than autistic" is actually going on in antivaxxers minds

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 01:19 (two years ago) link

“I’d rather have X than not do Y” when it’s those stakes are college stoner thought experiments and not great for the real world

so sure, how trenchant

mh, Thursday, 8 July 2021 04:06 (two years ago) link

I also feel like it follows a formula I see a lot on Twitter where you take something that is already bad (antivaxers, hatred of or misunderstanding toward autism) and extrapolate an even more extreme conclusion that doesn’t actually follow. Like “White America’s apathy toward police killings of black men just proves they would like to see every black person in America dead” or “Global warming inaction demonstrates how much our politicians hate our children.”

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 05:05 (two years ago) link

Hmm

I was following up to the examples and then hmm

mh, Thursday, 8 July 2021 15:41 (two years ago) link

it’s not far fetched at all there is a massive overlap between anti-vaxxers and autism parents. and neither of those other examples seem massively out there to me either

they might not necessarily be part of a conscious linear thought process but what is

Left, Thursday, 8 July 2021 16:05 (two years ago) link

anti-vaxxers generally question the efficacy of the vaccines. so it is a stretch to say that they would rather their children dead than autistic. this kind of thing is usually an emotional response, often from someone with autism themselves (or close to people with autism), so is a bit more understandable in that context

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 8 July 2021 16:33 (two years ago) link

man alive is technically correct; more accurate statements would be "White America’s apathy toward police killings of Black men just proves they don't give a shit about the treatment of Black people" and “Global warming inaction demonstrates how much our politicians don't care about the existence of the world past their lifetimes.”

however, anyone capable of parsing sentiment should be able to understand what those original examples are driving at so it really is just splitting semantics for the sake of splitting semantics

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 17:25 (two years ago) link

DJP has parsed those the same way as I did. Apathy becomes indistinguishable from directed harm when it’s unyielding

some philosophers may say differently, etc etc

mh, Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:09 (two years ago) link

and also indistinguishable from tacitly condoning

an eco-conscious Music Box (DJP), Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:54 (two years ago) link

Sure, but there are many evils in the world at a given time. You can't be said to be actively supporting anything you aren't actively opposing, it wouldn't even be possible to actively oppose everything.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:55 (two years ago) link

Or, you can say it's bad on facebook, check a box, and you're no longer complicit?

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Thursday, 8 July 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

? of course

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 8 July 2021 21:54 (two years ago) link

I guess going back to the original thing, my experience with antivaxxers is that their reasoning is a few steps removed from reality, and usually includes believing that their kids won't actually get those diseases for whatever reasons ("natural immunity," use of homeopathic immunity boosters etc). I guess it's possible that the grossly twisted thinking of an antivaxxer sometimes grows out of struggles with having a severely autistic child, even though it tends to take a life of its own from there.
