18 bookies on every town centre high street is another great New Labour legacy, wankers.

calzino, Monday, 15 June 2020 10:15 (three years ago) link

It's still astonishes me that we had a nationalised bookies until 2011. (Surely also the least controversial privatisation of all time?)

Matt DC, Monday, 15 June 2020 10:19 (three years ago) link

It's pretty funny and I didn't know it was still nationalised as late as 2011

calzino, Monday, 15 June 2020 10:24 (three years ago) link

I worked as a betting shop manager for an independent chain. Before the planning laws were liberalised they were turning down seven figure offers from the big three for little shithole bookies that didn't even have toilets in places like Hebden Bridge and Marsden and overnight they became worth the price of the bricks and mortar!

calzino, Monday, 15 June 2020 10:27 (three years ago) link

i think the Tote was an anomaly because most of the money it took was on track as far as i remember and it recirculated most of it back into the industry

now we have a national lottery which is effectively a PFI Tote and it's apparently used to keep people alive so i'm not sure we've progressed

a gambling addict will literally bet on two flies walking up a window, there is always something to bet on, even at the peak of the lockdown. Numbers games, Albanian netball, Moldovan welly throwing..etc

― calzino, Monday, 15 June 2020 10:31 (two hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

Early in lockdown I decided to run down the £20 or so in my online account by betting on whatever was available in play - I migrated from table tennis to esports (FIFA, CS:GO) and finally a chess tournament that was abandoned midway. My win rate was much higher betting on those than it ever was with regular old fitba.

confessions of a sad bastard: I do the Irish, French, Spanish, German and New York lotteries on a regular basis.

calzino, Monday, 15 June 2020 11:59 (three years ago) link

I'd assume that bookies are raking it, the usual suspects might be reduced, but there's a captive audience without much to do, some of whom would be averse to the general ambience of the bricks and mortar places. There's weird effects in the stock market (the US one at least) from people with apps day-trading.

We'd noticed one day that 70% of the ads we saw in live TV were bookies saying "careful now with the gambling! Call this number or go to this website if you have a problem!" - we were wondering if legislation was coming in, or if someone had had a quiet word to say "We've noticed you've got a new audience, a bit of care here could stop the boot coming down". We were watching Challenge, mind you, that might be a closer fit for some of the new gamblers?

my friend and his brother have spent most of this time in their garden, which they can socialise with their two neighbours. I went around last weekend and they have a roulette wheel and table made up.

Ste, Monday, 15 June 2020 12:27 (three years ago) link

and yeah, they are compulsive gamblers (to the point that one of the brothers was banned from Betfred for a year)

Ste, Monday, 15 June 2020 12:28 (three years ago) link

A friend of my wife's has constructed an open-air pub in the back garden, complete with a bell and those cardboard things of scampi fries and peanuts that you hang on the wall. Until this year building a pub in your own garden was 100% the preserve of washed-up football managers and ageing rock stars but having seen the photo it looks like utopia.

No results found for "erotic nik naks".

Suggestions:

Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
Try different keywords.
Try more general keywords.
Try fewer keywords.

Good to see the growing realisation that a huge amount of the money that has been thrown at NGOs over the last ten years has gone to Tory chancers, undercover cops and MI5 assets.

"(Rashford) has been using his profile in a positive way to highlight some very important issues"...

...that the leader of the Labour Party couldn't be arsed with until today because it was focused grouped and wasn't likely to bring him a 2.7 point poll boost with tory voting cunts and he was trying a forensically constructive approach to Tory-policy child poverty which involves not giving a flying fuck about it.
