Stir it Up is the biz but the earlier version is much much better

also am i bad person if i admit that this really the only marley album i can handle for more than one playthrough?

i could vote for "concrete jungle" but i could also vote for "baby we've got a date" or "slave driver" or "kinky reggae" or "no more trouble" for its riff alone

you're not a bad person but i can't understand how you're not also constantly cranking burnin' or african herbsman/soul revolution/whatever

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 15 June 2020 16:34 (three years ago) link

Concrete Jungle is not only the best song on this album, it's the best Bob Marley song period.

enochroot, Monday, 15 June 2020 17:23 (three years ago) link

Also, the hammond overdubs might have been necessary to break this album in the 70's rock market, but sitting here in 2020, it's hard to conclude that the original mixes weren't better before Island fucked with it.

enochroot, Monday, 15 June 2020 17:26 (three years ago) link

i always try listening to *african herbsman* and find myself start thinking, "why am i not listening to *catch a fire*?"

like i said, i'm probably just a bad person, so it's okay.

"small axe" is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 15 June 2020 17:58 (three years ago) link

yeah, it definitely has some jams. i can't argue with that.

I do love Soul Rebels and Soul Revolution but it's the atmosphere on this thing that carries it into a different realm altogether. I don't know that I can vote for anything other than Stir It Up.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Monday, 15 June 2020 18:35 (three years ago) link

Voted for "No More Trouble" on the strength of its live inclusion as the hook in the medley with "War"

i voted for "kinky reggae" idk

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:07 (three years ago) link

Man, this is tough.

Bob Marley might have the biggest, best, deepest catalog for an artist revered by so many for just a single hits comp.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:23 (three years ago) link

yeah i was spending a lot of time with natty dread the other day and thinking it deserved to be polled too lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link

or the lyceum live record, which is a record that comes v close to rivaling this one

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:26 (three years ago) link

Natty Dread was always my dad's favorite, so I have a soft spot for that one.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 23:23 (three years ago) link

c'mon everyone no-one in this thread has mentioned "midnight ravers" yet wtf

that said for me it could be any of "midnight ravers" or "concrete jungle" or "stir it up" or "slave driver" or "kinky reggae" or "no more trouble", so guess that's halfway understandable.

The organ blasts (I assume from Tosh) on "no more trouble" are insane.

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

kinky reggae is my runner up, and might get my vote due to the sneaking suspicion that concrete jungle is gonna win by a lot

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

the guitar solo on stir it up is one of the cutest, happiest moments in the history of recorded sound

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

^^^^^^^^

Tim F, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:47 (three years ago) link
