And this is mostly real damn good:
Oh, and while we're still waiting for yon studio Margo, this is mostly pretty fahn as in fine:
https://margoprice.bandcamp.com/album/perfectly-imperfect-at-the-rymanThough I must warn yall that she does "Proud Mary," and it's the slow-fast "PM": like the Ike & Tina, but def w/o Ike & Tina. Otherwise, in descending order of complaints, she sometimes extends the ends of lines with bah-bah vibraaato (Shakira does it better), the drinkin' medley seems maybe(?) a tad awkward, like she and the Price Tags needed to rehearse this bit of their old club act maybe(?) a tad more, and some words fall down a well---but the overall momentum and emotional relevance don't. In other words, it's one live album that doesn't seem to have gotten any tweaks, and needed hardly any. (But I'd skip that "Proud Mary" if I were you).

three weeks pass...

New album is channeling Stevie Nicks so consciously it's almost shameless, esp. the "I'm getting older too" line, but the songwriting is so great that doesn't matter.

Great live set. One day it will be weird to look back at these shows with musicians wearing face masks.

I like this album, even a couple of the long slow ones at the end.

I really like the new one. I've listened to her before and thought she was fine, had a generally favorable impression without anything really sticking. Is this one better or am I just more receptive to her?

I love the looseness of the songwriting, the way songs are kind of allowed to go their own way (not a Fleetwood Mac joke, tho obviously those influences are still there). I know about the mushroom binge that shaped the writing, I think it actually does show up though not in obvious psychedelic ways. More in a kind of organic gnarliness.

two weeks pass...

Saw her last night at the Fillmore in San Francisco

Was unprepared for how awesome she is live. Her band is so good, just tight as hell and she commands the stage like it’s 6 months into a residency. Crazy.

And the number of covers on top of her own material was dizzying - “White Rabbit”w Chuck Prophet guesting; “Pump It Up” w Margo on the second drumkit singing & playing; “Let Me Roll It” w Chuck Prophet again plus Lola Kirke & her band and Miko Marks, and “Mercedez Benz” just ~in~ the crowd singing on her own, unaccompanied

plus her own songs just sounded so full and punchier live

it was a whole mood as the kids say

I loved her records before this but I am a true believer now

Between her & the band she can really do anything she wants. Like watching a fearless circus acrobat? idk im tired

here’s a good video of let me roll it

(oh and Lola Kirke opened - she was ok?. couple good songs & a good two piece band but there were a lot of synths added in that didn’t need to be there. idk… vibe i got was kinda “over-decorated christmas tree”)

Anyone read her book?

This is a real good live album, with the title maybe coming from a missed cue or two, but the only really notable imperfection is a "Proud Mary" like Ike & Tina's, which doesn't work w/o actual Ike & Tina (& why "Proud Mary" in the first place?) Just a little (entertaining in the good old accidental musical comedy way) bump in the road, though:

we just got this one - will listen today!

Ok maybe your bar is insanely high ie perfection or nothing? bc i thought Margo’s version of “Proud Mary” sounded great! It honored Tina’s version about as well as you possibly could without yknow, BEING Tina. I mean, energy level, choir, band, vocals. It’s all pretty high level imo

it feels nitpicky to me to ding her on that idk

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:59 (one year ago) link

It's great that you enjoyed it more than I could, hope you liked the rest of the album too!

dow, Sunday, 12 February 2023 02:39 (one year ago) link

sorry if i sounded combative there. slightly over-caffeinated lol

yeah I did like the whole thing actually - i like that the arrangements & song choices seemed to try to rise ro the occasion of the Ryman somehow idk

jack white duet was cute and all but a little janky & wobbly after everything else

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 12 February 2023 02:48 (one year ago) link

Yeah, Jack can be janky alright.

dow, Sunday, 12 February 2023 03:28 (one year ago) link

i’m a fan usually (mostly) but it just seemed like a dorky club gig song vs something idk cooler. like his version of “one more cup of coffee” w margo wouldve been cool

woulda coulda

Planning to see her at a festival this fall, very much psyched for it.

Just got tix to see her in a couple of weeks. Tempted to buy Morgan Wade tix, too, to keep the M-name action going.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 12 February 2023 04:29 (one year ago) link

Hadn't thought to check any live shots on YouTube etc,. but Wade's 2021 Reckless is awesome, would like to hear her previous, self-released Puppets With My Heart---a very Morgan title.
xp Jack White's singing is not always quite up to his guitar and production chops, true.

dow, Sunday, 12 February 2023 21:32 (one year ago) link

She was great, what a badass, gonna read her book.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 05:02 (one year ago) link

yeah i need to read it too
