i haven't actually seen s4 as yet, it's only on Netflix UK in a couple of weeks I believe. I only just watched the first 3 seasons.

the new episodes are on All4 right now

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:28 (three years ago) link

the show has a habit of filling harmon's "fun stuff" segment with bland violence.

wasdnous (abanana), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:34 (three years ago) link

Has anyone seen Solar Opposites? Because the one (shitty) episode I saw played like a b-story Rick & Morty with none of the stuff that makes R&M good. In case anyone is wondering about Roiland's contributions vs. Harmon. With Solar Opposites in mind, the gross violence in particular I presume is Roiland's contribution.

...

And indeed, back from a visit to Wikipedia:

At Channel 101, participants submit a short film in the format of a pilot, and a live audience decides which pilots continue as a series. Roiland, then a producer on reality programming, began submitting content to the festival a year after its launch, in 2004. His pilots typically consisted of shock value—"sick and twisted" elements that received a confused reaction from the audience.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

the WACKY SUBVERSIVE CYNICAL world of Roiland is unfortunately getting family guy formulaic imo

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link

Yeah it was fresh in the channel 101 days, less so now

i enjoyed the solar opposites season but i wouldn't recommend it to ilx

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link

i'll watch anything with andy daly in it tho tbph i'm even all caught up on bananas for bonanza

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:21 (three years ago) link

It's def not highbrow enough for ILX.

I'm halfway through the season. The wikipedia says it eventually gets more serialized which is a bummer because I expected a lower stakes outlet for Roiland-style chaos ie House Of Cosbys. Instead it's sci-fi Bob's Burgers with weaker jokes. But otherwise the stories are bizarre and engaging and I'm enjoying it.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

I found Roiland voicing the lead to be massively distracting, since he plays a scientist who sounds like Rick, right down to the stammer. The first episode I thought had some good jokes in it, but also a lot of not good jokes. So ... totally average.

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2020 season is nominated in the 2020 ILX TV poll:

Dunno if anyone has been watching this season, but after a great first episode, the last few have been pretty bad. episode 4 was probably my least favorite episode they've ever done

Vinnie, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:03 (two years ago) link

Still some great gags and ideas, but definitely feeling like more of chore this time. I think the unpleasantness of it all is starting to grind me down - kind of feel that now is not the right time for art this deeply cynical.

chap, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:17 (two years ago) link

the episode names bear little relation to the contents, and aren't referenced outside the epg. if episode 4 is the cenobite episode then i think i agree.

the decoys episode seemed like a episode-length version of the snake civil-time-war sequence from the previous series and became hard to follow after 5 minutes. i did like the wooden puppets though.

koogs, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:22 (two years ago) link

still need to watch the last couple of eps, still love this show, stop watching and shut up if you're not into it

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:22 (two years ago) link

became hard to follow after 5 minutes.

This was part of the joke surely?

I look forward to the fascinating future of this thread, nothing but NV posting unequivocal praise.

chap, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:27 (two years ago) link

I remembered this show existed yesterday and caught up to the point of the vat of acid episode which was pretty great tbh, structured kind of like a Stewart Lee shaggy dog story gag

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:40 (two years ago) link

Yeah the show's at its best when it's playing with structure.

chap, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:42 (two years ago) link

> This was part of the joke surely?

i know, but it's a thin line between writing something clever that loses the viewer and writing something that's nonsense and loses the viewer and if the viewer's lost then how do they know which this is? (and does it matter?)

koogs, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:46 (two years ago) link

haven’t watched this week’s, but i thought the first couple eps were top tier, the third was spotty with a few funny moments speckled within way too much wanton violence, and the fourth was just too much

bezos did the dub (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 13:21 (two years ago) link

i loved this week's, didn't mind the cum episode fwiw, even if it was very lowbrow.

the Cenobite ep was pretty hilarious

the 4th one seemed… off? I’m not a huge R&M stan but I enjoy it and catch up every now and again. thematically v much in the wheelhouse, but the writing seemed particularly lazy and comic beats seemed forced or something idk. might have been the edible I took. anyway, I’m probably thinking about this way too much

I didn't like the one with Captain Planet, seemed so pat I was waiting for a twist. It's hard to care about characters they've worked so hard to make you dislike or not care about.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

Exactly how I felt about ep 4, will. Most of the jokes fell flat and every element felt like something they'd done better before. I didn't find the most recent episode that funny either but at least it had something new

I did totally love the first episode with the time door and the king of the ocean, instant classic

This show is still really hit and miss these days, but having Peter Dinklage doing the voice of the Alien Hans Gruber was an inspired choice.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 03:02 (one year ago) link

agreed on the hit and miss, that last "nightpeople" episode is the worst it's ever been but they've connected a few eps prior this year

forgot that this was back

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 04:16 (one year ago) link

Yeah it's weird that it's back so soon (haven't watched any of the new season yet)

Vinnie, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 12:50 (one year ago) link

I saw a couple of eps and they were solid/more of the same/meta/dark/funny/nihilistic/sentimental. But then I forgot it was back again, lol.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 13:18 (one year ago) link

the one i saw, probably the 1st episode, did feel like fan-service and nothing else.

koogs, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 13:45 (one year ago) link

i was hoping that the resolution to season 5 would've stemmed the fan service a bit. still gonna watch tho

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 16:35 (one year ago) link

to me, the plot-heavy episodes where a million things are happening (like ep 1) are so disappointing. so much writing and animation effort to make something overwhelming and unpleasant and usually not even that funny. I've liked all the other episodes so far, and the night people one was actually my favorite

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:31 (one year ago) link

we're definitely looking for different things out of this show i think. at this point i'm happy for it to be a self referential nihilistic sci-fi romp that breaks the fourth wall while doing teraflop twilight zone bullshit.

I mean, there's a good chance I'm in the minority on that opinion. My favorite eps have tended to be low on overarching plot, low on sentimentality and seriousness, high on sci-fi concept

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 03:01 (one year ago) link

The Fortune Cookie one was pretty funny.

earlnash, Thursday, 6 October 2022 04:10 (one year ago) link

i think i liked the "summer does a die hard" episode best fwiw

I had only watched the first episode of this show before yesterday. My son had shown it to me when he was in middle school and I was thoroughly repulsed and never went back for more. For whatever reason, yesterday I decided to give it another chance and threw a few more episodes on. I'm still skeptical that I'll find much value in it, but my plan was to keep trying to engage. Then as soon as I flipped it off, I went to check the news and saw the news about his domestic violence.

i watched a couple episodes and fucking hated it

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link

I generally like the show and often find it to be funny and clever, but sometimes only fitfully. Afaict it def. has more than its share of gross meme-lord fans, though. As does/did South Park, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

I watched it for a while hoping it would move past the nihilism and edginess but despite a couple of teases it never followed through so I gave up after a couple of seasons

it's less overtly misogynistic than something like family guy but there is a pervasive sense of unexamined male geekdom to the whole thing which is offputting and while I wouldn't have guessed this it's not a massive surprise unfortunately

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:57 (one year ago) link

south park is indefensible but can also be a lot funnier. neither is as clever as it thinks it is

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 13 January 2023 16:00 (one year ago) link

it honestly did feel like it moved past a lot of the edgelord-ness in this sixth season (with some notable exceptions), and while it feels like harmon is responsible for most of what makes the show great, roiland doing all the voices will make it hard for me to watch this again

sault bae (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 January 2023 16:01 (one year ago) link

Looks like he was first charged in May 2020, arrested and released in that August, then arraigned in October 2020. Was this reported two years ago?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2023 16:07 (one year ago) link

it has been transitioning into worldbuilding as coin of the realm and has honestly been doing a fairly good job of it.
this case is, as you said, not great

First I've heard of this case, very disappointing. I've enjoyed the show up to and including the most recent season but I'm probably off the train now
