And now she produced this lovely record:https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/christian-lee-hutson-beginners/

so this record is very good - the new one. one or two songs feel a bit slight right now, but perhaps they'll grow.
it would be unfair to expect her to deliver another Alps/"Motion Sickness" but damn is she close w/ Punisher/"Kyoto"
― alpine static, Saturday, 13 June 2020 09:07 (three years ago) link
YSI? 😉
― DJI, Saturday, 13 June 2020 15:22 (three years ago) link
I wish. :) Can't risk it, tho.
Let's just meet back here next Thursday night at midnight, cool?
― alpine static, Saturday, 13 June 2020 17:44 (three years ago) link
Can’t wait!
― DJI, Saturday, 13 June 2020 20:27 (three years ago) link
Can’t hardly wait.
― Jeff Sunship (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 13 June 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link
As much as I love "Kyoto" and "Garden Song," finding this oddly insubstantial on first listens.
― sean gramophone, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 19:08 (three years ago) link
PunisherHalloweenMoon SongSavior Complex
these kinda blur together a bit ... similar vibes, tempos, etc. "insubstantial" feels fair.
but after several listens, Punisher and Moon Song, especially, started popping out for me.
the only one i still feel pretty uninterested in is Halloween.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 20:36 (three years ago) link
not sure about this one on first listen either, feels akin to the 2nd Julien Baker album. of course some ppl loved that one
― k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 20:40 (three years ago) link
'Punisher' is one of my favourite tracks so far. 'Chinese Satellite' too. I'm really loving the album after a couple of spins.
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 06:24 (three years ago) link
tried listening to the leak (a vinyl rip) but it sounded fairly flat to me so i think i'll wait for the official release
― ufo, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 06:33 (three years ago) link
this is on streaming rn btw
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 13:55 (three years ago) link
kyoto is almost as good as motion sickness. i'll bet this one is great after a few listens, even if it doesn't make a perfect first impression.
― treeship., Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:01 (three years ago) link
on first listen it's pretty immediately better than stranger imo
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:02 (three years ago) link
she's a fucking great lyricist
i love "halloween" but i hate conor and wish he'd go away
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:06 (three years ago) link
"chinese satellite" has absolutely ruined my life, i'd say she outdid "motion sickness" there
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link
was listening without paying much attention to the lyrics, and it’s washing over me. im clearly doing it wrong and will save it for a time i can pay better attention.
kyoto is still a kick in the ass tho, what an excellent song.
― ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:18 (three years ago) link
if you're a work of arti'm standing too closei can see the brush strokes
i hate your momi hate it when she opens her mouthit's amazing to me how much you can say when you don't know what you're talking about
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:21 (three years ago) link
"i see you" is.... the best song
just got to chinese satellite, another great one. major echoes of the last couple albums by the national, especially in the way the drums and the strings interact. the chorus melody is super strong, feels like it could fit easily into a heroine's torch song in a disney movie.
― ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:31 (three years ago) link
i find it hard to get to the end of the record because i have to listen to "i see you" at least three times in a row before progressing
arrangement reminds me of neon bible (underrated)
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:32 (three years ago) link
That chord change 30 seconds or so before the end of Savior Complex!
― Matt DC, Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:47 (three years ago) link
that part where it briefly turns into 'what a wonderful world'?
― ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:01 (three years ago) link
Brad you should go back to stranger too
But yeah a few days on this album and even some of the less conspicuous tracks like Moon Song are revealing their richness. Helps to hear it in good sound quality.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link
i have gone back to stranger! it's a good record. this one's great

if you never get to the end of the record than you never get to the middle section of "I Know The End"
don't let that happen to you
― alpine static, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:17 (three years ago) link
horns on this remind me of Beulah at times.
― akm, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:36 (three years ago) link
agreed, that was my first reaction when i heard kyoto
― ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:41 (three years ago) link
"chinese satellite"! "i know the end"! idk if this is better than her debut but probably its equal
― ufo, Friday, 19 June 2020 01:09 (three years ago) link
This seems better than her debut on first listen - I couldn't really get into Stranger aside from "Smoke Signals", "Motion Sickness" and "Scott Street".
Already love "I See You" and "Kyoto". "Chinese Satellite" is incredible, the careful plucking on "Halloween" is gorgeous imo and Oberst isn't on it long enough to be distracting, and I'm a sucker for pretty strings so "Savior Complex" is right up my street.
Still kinda meh about: "DVD Menu", "Garden Song"
― Roz, Friday, 19 June 2020 02:47 (three years ago) link
update: the title track is perfect
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link
The last two songs too.

"chinese satellite" is like a kathleen edwards-quality song
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:34 (three years ago) link
and "moon song" is 100 percent taylor swift

fucking incredible record jesus

if we were to pin boygenius songs to individual songwriters my favorite phoebe bridgers song would be "me & my dog" and she wrote an album full of songs as good or better than that one

I’m on my first listen but so far making me feel like the early 00s is starting to come back into vogue? Reminding me of songwritery albums from that era.

I hear that early 2000s thing too. Big Sufjan/Polyphonic Spree vibes from 'I Know The End'.
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 20 June 2020 09:52 (three years ago) link
"I Know The End" sounds most like Bright Eyes tbh, just with a much better singer lol. Amazing song though, that closing verse is incredible.
― Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2020 10:17 (three years ago) link
i don't really like the horns on this album that much because they reminds me of bombastic 00s indie folk in a way that conflicts with the things i like about this album
― ufo, Saturday, 20 June 2020 10:24 (three years ago) link
even on kyoto?
