This executive order being issued against Twitter and Facebook today is quite a blindingly shiny infrastructure distraction (and in record time, it feels like).

If I'm reading that right, it will allow lawsuits to go forward a lot easier.

But the order could quickly find itself in a thicket of legal and constitutional questions as the White House tests the boundaries of its authority.

What barriers slow down or stop executive orders?

Lawsuits, injunctions against implementation/enforcement while the whole mess plays out in court.

This looks like a mistake, he has the balance on social media exactly in his favour right now, special rules for himself, but all unwritten so with plausible deniability. Facebook and Twitter got him into power, if Zuckerberg and Dorsey wanted to flex right now they could demonstrate this.

OTOH I'd like to see Trump wriggle his way out of this sticky situation, etc.

Wouldn't this exec order create more twitter censorship? They would be held accountable when Trump says libelous things.

I'm not on Twitter, so I can't check beyond his first few posts--did they at least leave up those disclaimers from yesterday, or are those already gone?

i don't really understand what he could do to twitter with an EO. if he holds the platforms responsible for what others publish on them -- as if they were "publications" -- then that would be the end of social media. the platforms would need to vet everything that is published on them, not just things that have been flagged.

Twitter should just ban him for 24 hours then reset his followers to 0.

It'll end up meaningless, this is just him flailing in his temper tantrum because, for the first time, he's actually seeing tangible pushback on the shit he spews.

Temper, and whipping up a story that's not the pandemic or George Floyd.

I think the latter is just a happy bonus for the GOP, I genuinely don't think Trump himself is thinking even that deeply beyond being absolutely furious that he's told he can't say whatever he wants.

Had a similar thought after I posted...Ultimately, I don't know if anything will matter in the election--the pandemic, deaths, the economy, race, feuds--except how many of you (Americans who want Trump out) vote.

Well, I don't know about that, but she's got a lot to answer for, sure. She doesn't seem like a glitter mind person though. I've got her pegged as more of a rapidly-transitioning scenes of mutilated flesh mind person. I just can't tell if that barely concealed rage is directed at him or at those who would destroy property. She's a tough nut to crack.
