I had fun listening to some of the world music fest clips here. It especially made me interested in balkan music.

I love many different kinds of Latin music (both trad and modern), Ethiopian jazz/funk, some eastern-jazz fusion stuff and all sorts of European folk, traditional or modern. I don't think UK folk counts as "world music" but that's probably my favorite. I have some Korean rock. I like I saw that movie Gypsy Caravan and EVEN THOUGH it was definitely a movie intended for NPR listeners, I enjoyed it anyway. I like the world's music, I guess.

I like Balkan music. It's cool seeing people folk dance in 7.

This is but one reason why I like emusic -- there is a lot of interesting stuff on there that I would never find/hear otherwise. Also they have tons of Fania releases.

I need more education on world music. I really like African music from what I can tell, but I don't know if I'm able to narrow it down to a more specific region/country.

Yeah, plus most of the "African" music I listen to is pretty heavily influenced by Western music. I like all the highlife stuff I've heard, some pretty awesome guitar on there.

I end up hearing most non-western music on the radio, although I've got some Brazilian, African, Cuban, and Indian cds that I'm into (mostly drumming-centric stuff).

For African stuff I basically have various afrobeat records + some West African drumming things (Drummers of Burundi = A+).

alice coltrane x2, love that record, yes plz. I had a huge Impulse! phase in college. My other favorite was Pharaoh Sanders - Karma.

When I was in high school my mom went to Eastern Europe on a choir tour and brought me back some really, really bad Czech and Hungarian hard rock CDs.

I guess I hardly think of Jamaican music as "foreign" at all, just because it's so heavily influenced by U.S. music and vice versa (and the African diaspora blah blah blah).

But you can take that to the extreme that there's no such thing as "foreign" music to United Staters.

Well, yeah, that "Teen Dance Music" record I posted is basically taking western music and playing with Eastern instruments, so it feels less foreign. But it's awesome stuff; even the non-Ennio Morricone tracks sound like Ennio Morricone, played on such foreign instruments.

Sure, "world music" is a pretty meaningless and arbitrary term, but so is every other genre classification.

I like Orchestra Baobob and saw these guys at the African festival a few weeks ago and liked them a lot.

True, but I still see a difference between stuff like afrobeat, where the local rhythms are translated to drumset and guitars and keys etc., and musicians trying to play some kind of traditional folk style (which I guess in this case would be the West African drums + vocals groups).

I'm up for the reinstatement of TT, especially now that the FFs aren't doing anything during the week. However, I can't do TT this week because I'm taking the GRE on Sat. and I need to cram this week. I took one of the computer simulations yesterday, I got a 780/800 on the verbal and a 420/800 on the math. ;_;

I don't need math to do library science, right?

i like the idea of thirsty thursdays, we used to do 'toasty tuesdays' or something similar when i lived here before, and it usually involved margaritas. fun even though i didn't drink back then.
