A 16-team format or play-in tournament FAIL to account for how shuffling in the standings would occur for bubble teams AND seeds 2-7 had the regular season resumed.

ok who gives a shit. let's just start the playoffs and get it cracking.

kinda think they shd do some more regular season games just to shake the rust off

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

the first round should be enough to shake off the rust for the teams that matter.

the posturing that has clearly started w/this lillard quote is going to be extremely annoying so let's just cut it off right here imo.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

theres a decently clean cut after 8th in both conferences right now, 5 games in east and 3 in west. just pull the trigger imo

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:20 (three years ago) link

it's an asterisk season no matter what

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

the world cup format wld be more fun and if the season isnt a normal season already why not do something fun rather than trying to keep everything the same which just highlights the weirdness of it

the whole playoffs might not even be long enough! players are gonna be rustier than they ever have been out of shape etc its gonna be ugly

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

the simplest solution is to just say the standings are what they are, bring the 16 teams to orlando, have them quarantine, give them cross conference scrimmage match ups to get back up to game speed, and then start the playoffs as is

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

the most recent windhorst podcast w/ tim bontemps on the disney thing is good... involving teams that have nothing to play for really makes no sense, and once you start pushing those teams out you might as well just say if you're not in the playoffs stay home. the only logical conclusion is that "fairness" is going to have to take a backseat to expediency & simplicity

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

or something like a non elimination group stage format between the 16 teams to determine seeding could act as the “get up to speed” period before the “real” playoffs began

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:31 (three years ago) link

u cld have the playoff teams play a game vs each of the playoff teams from their conf add that to the regular season totals then start the offs i guess

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:42 (three years ago) link

ie play 7 regular season games to get up to speed

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

Whatever the players and the league can agree to is going to be good enough for the fans, who have by far the least at stake.

A guy like Dame Lillard is at the stage in his career where wear and tear or injuries are vital concerns, not because he must keep playing to earn money. Every minute of his career from now on is about maximizing his chance for a ring. Of course he'll sit if he can't make the offs. That's his concern. As fans our main concern is just being entertained. I'll accept whatever they offer me.

I was watching what little jerry Sloan playing clips are on YouTube and his defense was like 20 years ahead of its time. An absolute pest

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 19:00 (three years ago) link

The bullets leaving him unprotected in the expansion draft belongs on the list of unbelievably bad decisions that franchise has made

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

I'd be pretty into a qualification tourney. Why not just lock in the top 6 in each conference and then do some sort of tourney for the last four spots? Give the other guys something to play for.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 19:42 (three years ago) link

i think the problem with most alternate formats is that every team is going to have a competing agenda and it's going to be really, really hard to get a consensus. if i'm the mavericks and someone suggests that i need to play a tournament for the 7 seed i was comfortably earning, there is absolutely no way i am agreeing to that. likewise, there are teams that are very happy with their current seed and teams that would love to shake the snow globe. how are they ever going to bridge that?

and honestly, one of the only appealing things about being an 8 seed in the nba (a couple of nights of home playoff gate revenue) is gone. as an owner on the outside looking in, i'm not sure how hard i would push to get my team into the 'offs.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 19:53 (three years ago) link

You're right about the Mavericks situation. I just would love to see it.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 20:07 (three years ago) link

Although Cuban himself advocates for a tourney https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29224715/mark-cuban-suggests-play-tournament-final-2-seeds-nba-playoffs

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 20:13 (three years ago) link

i like the round robin first round cause it gives us some good team on good team action and just has a bunch of different matchups where the first round has historically been kind of a slog

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:04 (three years ago) link

It’s a great idea Cos maybe the warriors will be healthy and the hilarity of them being the worst team to having a shot at something could be fun. Also gives Zion n them a chance to make some noise.

Don’t really matter to me tho let’s just see some damn hoop asap

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:07 (three years ago) link

i disapprove of anything that lets the warriors into the playoffs unless the draft lottery gets retooled to match the playoff structure

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:12 (three years ago) link

I feel like that would lead to some obvious tanking in the tournament. Would the low seeds really risk their top pick for a sliver of a chance in a tournament that might not even finish?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:23 (three years ago) link

idk how it would work i just know that letting the dominant team of the past 4 years both have a chance in the playoffs and get the top lottery odds is nagl

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:27 (three years ago) link

if that happened i would post "the fix is in" roughly twice as often as i already do

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:29 (three years ago) link

The Warriors are destiny's team. It would only be right.

If KD is feeling better he has to play for the warriors, right?

DJI, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 02:22 (three years ago) link

dont think anyone is proposing letting the warriors in itd just be the top 20 teams

lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 02:30 (three years ago) link

Me n poly propose it

ESPN doing back to back airings tonight of Kobe's last game (lol he just fouled nonstop and dared the refs to call it) at 9.30 pm est and the 2016 dubs' 73rd win at 7 pm est

pretty interesting listening to two espn pods recorded within days of each other:

brian windhorst/tim bontemps: the only logical decision from a timing, expense, and safety perspective is to only bring back the playoff teams.

woj/zach lowe: the nba is set on playing more games than just the playoffs, adam silver would love to do a play-in tournament, here's a byzantine idea to bring back 20 teams and have a 7-team tournament for three playoff spots.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 May 2020 00:10 (three years ago) link

they need to hit 70 games to meet tv contracts. this could be supported by players if it will get them paid.

micah, Thursday, 28 May 2020 00:27 (three years ago) link

ah that is an important detail!

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

the other side of that is that putting on more games means players get paid more of their salary without corresponding gate revenue. putting on games is an expense to teams and the nba. as i understand it RSN money varies wildly from team to team.

it's just really tough to figure out.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 May 2020 01:30 (three years ago) link

A Modest Proposal: put every player for every team in the league on one court, last man standing with the ball wins the NBA Finals. Not his team, just him.

Windhorst is bad at his job

“I'll tell you one thing: that scenario gets Zion Williamson in," added Windhorst. "Look, I've just heard... I'm not saying the NBA is going this route, I'm just saying I've already heard this scenario that no matter what happens, the cutoff line will be the Pelicans. They'll be in. It will be the first time in the history of the NBA that the league kicked the ball into the fairway for New Orleans."

"Other than vetoing the CP3 to the Lakers' trade," replied Tim MacMahon.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 28 May 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

Is Boban Marjanovic the greatest 9th man of all time?

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 29 May 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

btw i listened to that windhorst thing yesterday and from what i could tell he was relaying what other teams in the league were theorizing, not saying the nba was actually going to rig it for zion

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 May 2020 15:55 (three years ago) link

yes, that is what he was saying.

restart scenario reporting is slowly killing me; i hate it but i can't stop consuming it.
