i play a divination wizard which is v cool ime. i roll 2d20s after a long rest and those become my portents that i can use (once each) to sub instead of rolling the die. if you roll high it's great you can do something clutch like once i guaranteed that our group's barbarian would bring down a dragon with a net by giving him an exceptionally high roll. if you roll low it's great because then you can force a powerful monster to fail a saving throw and whatever save or suck spell you cast is actually just a suck spell. if you roll 12s or 13s it's a little trickier but if you can work out what a monsters saving throw bonuses are thru observation you can get good use of them too (i countered a BBEG last session who was about to planeshift away with like half our party through a well timed portent roll of 12). i think the RP consequences are interesting too - my divination wizard is convinced that his portents are not predictions but actually his unconscious dreaming state reaching out and manipulating the fabric of time.

plz i beg i've been v nerdy here don't leave me hanging

The black metal edgelord in me wants to say necromancy. I'd kill for a CRPG revolving around the player's arduous path to lichdom. Having never experimented with pen-and-paper, divination (and the rogue class, while we're at it) always seemed kind of lame but that's just due to the limitations inherent to video games as a medium.

This is pretty cool btw:

Oh hell yeah. This will take some research but I'm pretty sure as a kid necromancy seemed the coolest.

I just named a track Prismatic Spray, a phrase which apparently stuck in my head for 25 years.

yeah divination stuff is much cooler in RP tabletop games than action rpgs where reading ppl's minds or augury can give you significant information you might otherwise not be able to get xxp

Can you beat enchantment? Imbuing every person and thing with magical properties?

In wizard's clothing.

pomenitul, Monday, 25 May 2020 00:58 (three years ago) link

Well “cleric” wasn’t an option but basically yes, wizards are dangerous people and need to be policed appropriately

one fun thing about dnd tomboto is that you can rp alignments that aren't your irl one!

Just because my aim is to achieve lichdom doesn't mean I intend to harvest the souls of the living, you can trust me, I am a chaotic good necromancer.

Conjuration - seems fun I guess, the 'Wish' spell seemed like a tantalizing thought experiment when I was reading D&D books as a kid
Necromancy - goth magic, obviously cool
Evocation - ok so this is the basic pew-pew magic, functional but boring
Abjuration - defensive magic, 'Dispel X', extremely functional but extremely boring
Transmutation - very fun times, turning yourself or others into animals, maybe this is the one?
Divination - idk this just seems like cheating
Enchantment - so this is apparently magical disinformation & psyops - 'Modify Memory', 'Mass Suggestion', 'Feeblemind', ban these people
Illusion - the fun & wholesome version of the above, kids love it

there is this guy who is the secretary of the Huddersfield branch of the Circle of Magicians who once tried to murder my stepdad with a samurai sword. It was a quite amusing family talking point when pics of him as a magician and children's entertainer kept popping up in the local rag - if he'd managed to hack through this wooden door before the cops got to him he'd be still practising his powers of Abjuration in some shower room at a category A prison right now rather than impressing kids with quite rudimentary card tricks!

rushomancy is a form of divination so voting divination
