aw man should i have voted for “confusion the waitress”

this is the curse of underworld live versions, them rethinking their catalog makes *you* rethink their catalog

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 23 May 2020 04:32 (three years ago) link

yeah, I probably wouldn't have thought to have "Little Speaker" on my ballot if not for that!

maffew12, Saturday, 23 May 2020 11:48 (three years ago) link

vibe i'm getting from this "best of the bells tour" comp is that the london roundhouse 29/02/08 show was a real banger

saving the live gigs for post voting

I've now listened to over 1,000 UW tracks the last few weeks and fallen in love with this amazing band all over again

WOW thank you! I can't wait to check this out :)

Also I'd like to give an early TOO LOW to Moaner, because I was listening to it (like 6 times in a row) last night and I'm pretty sure I ranked it too low on my ballot. And it was at or around the top 10!

Hackers (1995) (Will M.), Saturday, 23 May 2020 22:04 (three years ago) link

Setlist.fm says it's the only time they played it!

my "mixes and reworks" compilation goes from the Relentless Legs mix of Moaner into the Barking mix of KOS, which is

https://discordemoji.com/assets/emoji/6758_Chef_Kiss.png

I guess they were in a rough time around then, almost breaking up around the Olympics (I'm not sure Karl worked on that stuff at all?).

Karl wrote some lyrics for Caliban's Dream, but may not have been involved in anything else? whereas Rick had to subcontract High Contrast to handle the less-involved athletes' march half of the event, and was hospitalised from exhaustion within hours of the ceremony

just listen/watched one of the five times they ever played And I Will Kiss (across two months in 2018), and Rick gives Karl a tetchy "not now!" wave away Karl starts to fiddle with his effects desk and double the choral part

Ha. I clumsily mentioned Moaner the other night when I was ranking my ballot. I was surprised at myself not ranking it at all. I do love Moaner. Top 100 track for sure! It was their newest single when I got into the band. This is going to sound ridiculous probably... but just looking at the entirety of their work to this point, it feels so completely out-done in every aspect. Moaner throws absolutely everything at the wall and I just think it sounds kinda goofy right now. At the time it was the perfect thing in their catalogue for closing shows. But now they have handfuls of bangers, euphoric songs, scary songs, ranty songs, whatever. Moaner seems to be doing all of these things at once.... and it deserves so much credit for not falling to pieces entirely.

But maybe I was unfair.

... Early TOO LOW for "Jumbo" here.

Good news, guys, I finally found a rip of the Australia-only "Extasy Pass" 1989 12" B-side mix of Thrash, so can really crack on with trimming my list down now

Bleeqwot (sic), Saturday, 23 May 2020 23:57 (three years ago) link

lol.. hey what is the total number of tracks?

sent in 77 to help reach the next-five mark. only easy choices were the top & bottom 2

i added "confusion the waitress" to mine after hearing that recording lol

lowercase (eric), Sunday, 24 May 2020 11:34 (three years ago) link

Voted!

That was tough (but fun)

groovypanda, Sunday, 24 May 2020 13:00 (three years ago) link

with my own finished-at-6am ballot, that's another five, so here's another Obliviobestof (NB: the last two tracks are mistitled as 29/2, should be the 28th)

Still looking forward to getting ballots from Eric H and Tim F today - anyone else racing to the extended deadline? (Dan?)

Bleeqwot (sic), Sunday, 24 May 2020 14:03 (three years ago) link

I'll try to send one this evening

The more the merrier.

Bleeqwot (sic), Sunday, 24 May 2020 20:06 (three years ago) link

thanks sic, grabbed both these compilations for sometime. I may listen to all of the shows first. These look like parts 6 and 9 of something?? What you up to? Smooth editing.

Today I played a bit of "Bootleg Babies", a fan made alternative to "Everything Everything" that was put out on the old Underworld fan site way back when. Had to resort to S0ulseek surprisingly. Can upload to web if anyone likes. (um... if we get 10 more ballots!?)

maffew12, Sunday, 24 May 2020 20:14 (three years ago) link

Bootleg Babies is great. Think it was an RTSR project with input from lots of us on the old dirty.org forums about which live performances to choose.

Still got my original CD copy somewhere

Realized I never actually voted in this, slapped together a ballot and sent it in

lol.. hey what is the total number of tracks?

exact numbers are squishy what w/ different versions, but we have votes for over 200 titles

Bleeqwot (sic), Monday, 25 May 2020 22:00 (three years ago) link

Wow, nice! I was wondering how many total songs were eligible... but I realize that's really fuzzy. I just took your big list and cut out all the remixes (the ones that aren't new or practically new songs) and instrumentals and stuff, and I got 205. Doesn't count all the other stuff that's eligible like movie soundtrack tracks (I put in 2) and Freur/early Underworld, etc.

Vegemite Is My Grrl (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 23:08 (three years ago) link

not a big enough fan to vote, but I hope Stagger does well. I love that one

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 00:24 (three years ago) link

Should have titled it Colonel Sanders Fingers

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

#72 here. Now feeling great shame.

maffew12, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

imo no such thing as 'not a big enough fan' for these things

maffew12, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 00:42 (three years ago) link

I could name you 5 of their songs and you have to submit 13

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 01:04 (three years ago) link

my goodness you're not a fan at all :D

it's a reasonable cutoff I guess!

maffew12, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 01:10 (three years ago) link

incidentally what are your 5? that's interesting cuz you like Stagger

and so you should. top 15 on mine

groovypanda, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 05:56 (three years ago) link

i should've voted for "banstyle/sappys curry" even higher

"stagger" is in my top ten i think

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:13 (three years ago) link

one of the many reasons i love second toughest in the infants is that the sequencing makes it a rave center ("rowla"/"pearl's girl") surrounded by gossamer jazzy flourishes ("juanita," "banstyle," and "stagger")

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:17 (three years ago) link

Agreed, the expansiveness of “banstyle/sappy’s curry” and “stagger” (as well as the “kiteless” / “to dream of love” section of the opener) both give the album its distinctive feel vis a vis their other work and allows the band the room to record what is perhaps otherwise their most uncompromising work - later tracks could be faster or harder, but the sheer minimalism of much of this album still startles.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 20:27 (three years ago) link

Actually it’s really only about the first minute of “Juanita” that sounds minimalist, isn’t it? But I love the way that track starts and hence the way the album starts: dropping you straight into the middle of a techno set in some dark club at 2am in the morning (one of the genius things about the Everything Everything version is how it totally replaces the undercarriage of this section with something both housier and ravier while preserving this essential truth).

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 20:33 (three years ago) link

dog latin you are going to have a WILD RIDE in the rollout

massage angry pixels (sic), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 21:40 (three years ago) link

I just sent in a ballot. That was ridiculously difficult. A bunch of what I love about underworld is contained in the remixes they did from 92-95, so I'd like to chat about those at some point too.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

ffs

massage angry pixels (sic), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 22:38 (three years ago) link

Tim, that's so beautiful
