I'm in R Keystone -- I assume R signifies Rookie?

pretty annoyed i got 5/6 questions right on each of the first two days and lost both

na (NA), Friday, 22 May 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

Apropos of one yesterday's questions, it's nice to see that I can leave off a leading article (e.g. "the") and still get the answer counted correctly.

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Friday, 22 May 2020 18:07 (three years ago) link

I assigned 3 points to a question about James I when my opponent was Scottish. Oops.

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Saturday, 23 May 2020 17:46 (three years ago) link

blew the ♂♀ question because i misread it as asking for zodiac signs; stole a win thanks to some curious defense by the friend who invited me to ll

I don't get why the answer to the Holi question was "fitting"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 23 May 2020 17:54 (three years ago) link

Is it good or bad to have a higher MCW? Or is it just a fun statistic for no real purpose besides amusement?

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Saturday, 23 May 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

the latter, give or take 'fun'

I think just because it's just so blatantly colorful. Like, yes, "Festival of Colors" is an appropriate name for something that looks like this:

jaymc, Saturday, 23 May 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

Oh something about the phrasing made me think it was supposed to be a play on the word "Holi." Anyway, I had no idea and I'm impressed such a high % of people got it!

I'm in R Keystone -- I assume R signifies Rookie?

― Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Thursday, May 21, 2020 5:36 PM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Yep, R is Rookie. After your rookie season, you'll be placed in an A-, B-, C-, D-, or E-level rundle, depending on how you finish in your rookie rundle. Also note that the league that you're placed in as a rookie is the same as your referrer, so you're in R Keystone because I'm in A Keystone. (For a long time, I was in Coastal, but the leagues get realigned every so often, and the branch that we're in was moved a couple of seasons ago.)

jaymc, Saturday, 23 May 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

once you're placed in your sophomore season, you can move up or down in the rundles based on how you play in that given season.

Can someone explain yesterday's math question to me?

maura, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link

zero to the fouth power + two, one to the fourth power + 2, etc.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:46 (three years ago) link

It’s not a fun question.

silby, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

oh hm

maura, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

I got pwned yesterday, but I'm pleased with myself that I got the math question.

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

I spent a long time trying to figure it out, both before and after answering. Kind of kicking myself because it occurred to me that 258 was 256+2, but I was just thinking of 256 as a number obtained by repeatedly doubling 2 (rather than specifically 4^4), so I didn't see the connection to the other integers in the sequence.

jaymc, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

i am absolutely belly flopping this season

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

I recognized the use of exponents, but it took me actually writing out the power tables to see it more clearly. That was the giveaway for me, physically writing down a grid of powers 0-5 for each integer.

I'm getting into the habit of fucking up the very easy questions, and therefor not being penalized because my opponent gives that question a 0. Made two silly mistakes MD4: answered "murder wasp" instead of "murder hornet" because of the word "Vespa" in the name, and guessed Kennedy instead of Johnson because I thought, "1963, that's Kennedy!" When obviously, that's uh...that's the wrong Kennedy year.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Thursday, 28 May 2020 13:12 (three years ago) link

An odd match for me yesterday: a 8(4)-8(4) tie. Both my opponent and I missed two questions, but in each case, they were worth 0 and 1 point.

jaymc, Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:39 (three years ago) link

(I was assigned 0 on the TV question, presumably because that's one of my strongest categories, but I've never heard of the Danny Thomas show and couldn't remember which '90s legal drama starred Dylan McDermott. Meanwhile, I assigned my opponent a 0 on the emulsion question, because I figured if it was a science question that even *I* knew, then it must be easy. Apparently not for him.)

jaymc, Thursday, 28 May 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

I made a critical error on my defense points yesterday and it resulted in a tie, and today, I'm up against our rundle leader. Oh boy.

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Thursday, 28 May 2020 18:33 (three years ago) link

defense is difficult in general, but especially in rookie rundles when you have no history to look at

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 May 2020 18:38 (three years ago) link

Whoa! I pulled off a bit of an upset yesterday when I hadn't been sure of any of my answers! Though in all honesty I wouldn't have given myself credit for the Chagall question because I spelled it Mark (my reasoning was that no German surname would end in a C).

I was a little miffed in the previous match that my opponent only assigned
1 point to the calculus question. I had genuine trouble remembering if the answer should've been negative, and for some dumb reason they gave me only 1 point for it. I wonder if they saw my last name and assumed that I was some kind of math whiz.

Gazelle Bundchen (Leee), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:50 (three years ago) link

spelling rarely counts

I saw a PerryDJ on the message board and thought "Whoa!" before I saw their locale.

Swoler Bear (Leee), Tuesday, 2 June 2020 18:03 (three years ago) link

Does the long interregnum between submitting answers and the announcement of match day results get easier to manage over time? Because I've found myself obsessively reloading the message board over there several times an hour and reviewing my past questions.

Swoler Bear (Leee), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 01:16 (three years ago) link

i guess that’s healthier than obsessively reloading most other things these days, but

for real i have not been killing on questions but seems like my entire rundle is eating it (D Lyceum 2) and i've allowed a grand total of 3 UFPA which feels like its own kinda victory. playing some italian style football in LL

nobody knows who they were, or what they were doing, but their legacy lives on -- hewn into the living rock . . . of stonehenge

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 June 2020 17:57 (three years ago) link

Whenever I play one of the leaders, I seem to catch them on an off-day, like yesterday vs. the third place who only answered two questions correctly. Hopefully that trend continues as I'm up against someone who's been a perfect 10-0-0 so far.

http://www.worldquizzing.com/

you may want to check out the world quizzing championships, which have been pushed back this year from june to december - it's a big 240-question annual written quiz, and they do smaller monthly events as well.

the material is (significantly) harder than LL but written by a british team and designed for a mostly european audience, so it's like the inverse of LL in terms of its approachability to americans; the best i've ever done is around 50% correct on a WQC test (which is still an excellent score), vs .831 lifetime in LL. they also have a LL clone that tries to be a little less NA-specific, but it's invitation-only.
