Yeah, it was a really rough day when I bought that 75 Dollar Bill record and they told me I had to immediately burn my copy of Jack Johnson.

Typically uninterested in neo-psych guitar-jam bands but inspired by this thread I checked out One Step Beyond by Garcia Peoples and I liked it. I get as much Feelies (and at one point, The Band) from them as I do the Dead but I definitely hear the Dead thing too. Don't know what 75 Dollar Bill has to do with any of these other bands, though. They're leagues apart imo, at least based on some cursory listens to some of the other jammy bands named in this thread

As to Whiney's point, my hunch is that a lot of these bands actually do aspire to the heights of the artists he names but most can't pull it off, which is not really a criticism because, come on, who the fuck can pull off Fela or Can or Ornette better than Fela, Can, or Ornette? This is also, by the way, why I resist listening to neo-psych guitar-jam bands: life is short and I'd almost always rather go to the source. I mean, there are a lot of electric Miles bootlegs out there

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 10:42 (three years ago) link

It's a fuckn drag to me that there's a whole scene of white dudes who wanting to play/listen to longform jamz that could be jamming to the intricate and groove-centric arrangements of Funkadelic, Fela Kuti, Electric Miles, Ornette Coleman, Can, Isaac Hayes, Neu!, Herbie Hancock, Flash and Bambaataa tapes, Zulu Beat Radio, whatever, but instead they're like "What if jam bands but Union Pool"

― The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, May 18, 2020 7:55 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

There could be an interesting discussion about the differences/similarities between strands of jam and current bands tapping into them (or not) but, as usual per latter-day ILX, it's couched in box-canyon zings where no discussion is required or wanted.

Though Bedford Cheese Shop Incident is B+. Good job.

Laziest Sybarite in the World (PBKR), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 12:18 (three years ago) link

Tangentially related and somewhat tying these ideas together, someone put together a 20+ minute live jams playlist on Spotify that does indeed have Dead, Phish, electric Miles, Velvet Underground and Can on it. Starts out promising, but then of course it devolves into some of the worst jam imaginable - Twiddle, Goose (both of which I'd successfully avoided until now), Disco Biscuits, Aqueous, String Cheese Incident and Umphrey's McGee.

Twiddle is the worst of the worst though, imagine someone strangling Dave Matthews over some of the laziest, least imaginative "jamming" possible.

Peter Kerlin from Sunwatchers is also (or was for a long time) in Solar Motel too

he is a secret weapon in both imo -- always holding things together when they spiral out. i esp like his playing on the long track of the Forsyth/Solar Motel/Garcia Peoples live album. i love the second track on that album too -- afaict a uniting factor of these bands is that they are aiming at some sort of transcendence, which i think we all have the musical right to do, and they occasionally reach it. GP covering Popol Vuh was enjoyable to a certain degree (if very by-the-numbers) but the vocals left something to be desired imo.

my only gripe about this general type of band is there are too many men in these bands. the women only came in to sing. my long-awaited (by me) plan to record a women-only instrumental Can-jam was squashed by the rona :( maybe someday

i don't expect anyone else to care about this but as a woman i wouldn't mind some more femme musical energy in the mix.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

oh no that would help it's a dude scene for sure

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:45 (three years ago) link

like bring some meg baird, elisa ambrogio, ava mendoza in the mix and i think i could stay interested instead of getting a tiny bit bored. just sayin

looking forward to the upcoming marisa anderson + jim white album but that is a very special combo

yeah that's like the most anticipated album in ilx brigade history! was so glad I got to meet her and tell her how much I loved her music even if I was probably a dork

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:55 (three years ago) link

For sure, there are way too many dudes in these bands. I was surprised by the ratio of women at the Garcia Peoples show I saw at Schuba's, but it would be great to see that reflected in the band line-ups. It's interesting that a lot of the women that do overlap with this scene (Kendra Amalie, Sarah Louise), primarily pursue their own solo projects.

Also, La Lechera otm with Garcia People's vocals, def a weak link.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link

in general vocals ain't exactly the best feature of any bands in this zone

Baird is great, she sounds should be the lead singer of all these bands

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:58 (three years ago) link

That would not be bad, she's great.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 14:59 (three years ago) link

What happened to Heron Oblivion? She was singing and drumming in that band. When I saw them, I was not disappointed or bored and her presence and energy really did change the dynamics of this particular type of rock music.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 15:02 (three years ago) link

don't know actually!

on the latest Forsyth he has a vocal by Rosali (her album Trouble Anyway is great but but really this scene) anyway, it sounded so good over his stuff

love the guy but his singing is not great

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

Last I heard of Heron Oblivion was a set NYC Taper shared from December of 2018, that was pretty heavily loaded with "new" material. I've been hoping that means a second official album, but I haven't heard anything lately. That self-titled record was fantastic.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 15:07 (three years ago) link

think there's a new heron oblivion in the works, new meg baird solo album as well ... she kinda goes at her own pace, haha.

Bedford Cheese Shop Incident it A+, thank you Whiney. Park Slope Toodle-oo?

Probably of interest to some of the folks in this thread, Aquarium Drunkard has put together a 44-track digital comp to raise money for Australian brushfire relief. Includes MV & EE, Dire Wolves, Hans Chew, Nathan Salsburg, Elkhorn, Starbirthed, Sarah Louise and many, many others.

LL if you're cooling yr heels waiting for a new Heron Oblivion album you might enjoy this Major Stars album from last year that's got similar vibes (though I think Wayne Roger's p easily outclasses the Comets guys, which is fine though bcz as cool as much as I like Noell Dorsey she's no Meg)

Anyways ahem

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 20:58 (three years ago) link

La Lechera, should be noted that Kryssi Battalene is the main guitar-wrangler in Mountain Movers and Headroom (mentioned above), who bring some nice Heroin Oblivion/Major Stars adjacent sonics, though directly. She is great, pretty partial to this one: https://headroomnhv.bandcamp.com/album/head-in-the-clouds

She also has a cool Black Dirt / Natch session as "Earth Cult" with Sarah Louise and Sally Ann Morgan (of House & Land) that I am into: https://blackdirt.bandcamp.com/album/natch-11-earth-cult-sarah-louise-sally-anne-morgan-kryssi-b-2

Sarah Louise has also sat in with Garcia Peoples, and I imagine will do so again down the line. (Completing the circle ....)

as I've said in the Fahey thread (or maybe I didn't) the song "Statesboro Jam" from global tetrahedron's 2020 album is maybe my favorite song of the year so far, certainly within this general sonic world.

alpine static, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 00:46 (three years ago) link

alpine static, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 00:47 (three years ago) link

yeah we generally did all this stuff on the Fahey thread, which I generally approve of a "big tent" definition of the diaspora esp cuz so many like Forsyth, Ryley Walker come from that scene orginally

Wilco live shows (Nels on Impossible Germany live is the new Dark Star)

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown)

any particular recordings you can recommend, i haven't heard a live version since a radio broadcast from the netherlands in 2011

i am unequipped to really speak on the new jam scene except that i god tried to listen to that song and for the first ten minutes it was mediocre kosmische-jazz and then i got bored and skipped forward and yep that sounds like the dead alright. i guess they're better than the flaming lips.

i'm listening to the eight minute "single" version now. they sound like, i don't know, white denim. they're not bad, but i genuinely think the dead did it better when they were on.

i might be sold on these folks another time.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 01:09 (three years ago) link

I actually don't, I have seen them a couple of times in the last 5 years and hadn't seen them for a long time and was kind of blown away by what a good live band they are now

but I guess they've probably done 200+ shows a year forever

Impossible Germany is I'm pretty sure almost every show and is Nel's showcase

they still doing "bull black nova"? i kinda liked that one.
