don't know what feint you're seeing there

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:06 (three years ago) link

I watched it again. Paused it and when he'd already caught it and was holding the ball at waist level, the clock shows.., 0.8 seconds.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:11 (three years ago) link

isn't it 1.8 on the clock for that shot?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link

ANYWAY.. I just watched it again. not mentioned in the doc - pippen's last two good looks leading up to that were 1) a brick 2) giving up possession on a shot clock violation.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:19 (three years ago) link

and it's out of his hands with .3 left so..............

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:24 (three years ago) link

........the Bulls officially won the game.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:41 (three years ago) link

clock never really starts on the catch........because of the human brane

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:13 (three years ago) link

I watched part 7 last night. Pippen bailing was completely new to me--I guess I wasn't paying attention to basketball at all at that point. Amazing...I was trying to think if I've ever seen anything comparable in baseball, but I'm not sure that you can even having something comparable in baseball.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:14 (three years ago) link

a starter getting pinch hit for in bot of 9th?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:20 (three years ago) link

In terms of the perceived insult, yes, but he's being removed from the game by the manager; Pippen removed himself. Maybe if you sent your closer out in the 6th in a non-crucial situation because you'd lost confidence in him and he refused to go out.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link

xp I still remember Trent Tucker hitting that shot to win game with .1 seconds left. Caused them to make rule that anything less than .3 had to be a tip in/volley.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link

The Bulls, led by first-year head coach Phil Jackson, later filed an official protest with the NBA about the play. By their estimate, the play took closer to 0.4 seconds. However, timekeeper Bob Billings and referee Ronnie Nunn, who were working that game, claimed everything went perfectly fine. The protest was disallowed.

lol never change, nba refs

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:38 (three years ago) link

After the Trent tucker thing they did slow motion studies and found that .3 is the minimum amount of time for anyone to catch and shoot. But .8 is a lot longer! Pretty much everyone has a catch and shoot faster than that.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:58 (three years ago) link

That Trent tucker shot was QUICK, admittedly. Probably right at .3.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:00 (three years ago) link

wikipedia says they used studies done in Europe, where they'd been using the tenths game/shot clock for awhile already. but yeah dude had a super quick release.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:19 (three years ago) link

so many slow game clock stops throughout a half add up to at least a few seconds of unfairly lost time. we need chipped balls and computer vision to be sure who wins a ball game.

Morton Koopa Jr. Sings Elvis (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

I am guessing there were several closers in the 90s and 00s who made it clear they wouldn't come out before the 9th, especially when contracts have dumb clauses about how "50 saves" earns you another few million and your arm can go at any point

still to do it during a playoff game is just nuts, I cannot believe Scottie saying he wouldn't change a thing, wtf

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

the baseball stuff was fascinating, wish they'd spent more time on that. kinda respect Michael for actually doing it, after teasing everyone for a couple years that he was done. can't imagine how crazy that must've been to live through as a Bulls fan, outside of LeBron's Decision I can't think of anything even remotely close to that. otoh walking away after winning 3 straight titles still feels crazy to me, at that point you're not quite cemented as the best player ever and I find it hard to believe that MJ really couldn't find the 'motivation' to win another title, wtf

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

go check out the 30 for 30 about jordan's baseball days, it's good.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:22 (three years ago) link

always wanted to see that, guess now is the time

was the general consensus that Jordan could've made the majors had he gotten another year to work at it? obviously 32 is pretty old for a debut but clearly the man was still in shape

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:26 (three years ago) link

No. But he was said to be making "progress". Particularly in the Fall league just before the strike happened when he played for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link

I remember it was announced during a White Sox playoff game that he was gonna retire. Think he had thrown out the 1st pitch for it? Just total shock and sadness. Difficult to believe and process. Not only had just 1 3rd in a row, but he was in his prime! A lot of ppl thought it was just a reaction to his father's murder and he'd "snap out of it".

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

the Jordan baseball 30 for 30 is really good
i might give it a rewatch myself

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:40 (three years ago) link

yeah loved the stuff with his Barons teammates and his realtor

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

yah the bad boys, rodman and jordan baseball 30 for 30s are good supplemental viewing for this

Spottie, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 19:53 (three years ago) link

A lot of ppl thought it was just a reaction to his father's murder and he'd "snap out of it".

i remember this being the prevailing attitude and, given how things turned out, maybe not too far from the truth!

Going back to our earlier "is it helpful to be a psychopath and if not which players were able to pull it off and be competitive" conversation, Dave Zirin suggests Bill Russell.
https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/last-dance-espn/

Jordan was pure capitalism: expanding his brand off the court, and a cutthroat bully with his own team. Russell was pure resistance: finding love and solidarity among teammates and fiercely holding onto his sense of self off of the court. His white teammates who didn’t show him solidarity, particularly on Russell’s proud struggles against racism, still loved him then and feel guilty today that they didn’t do more. One gets the feeling that the only regrets Jordan’s teammates have is that they didn’t stand up to him more and instead let him break their will. Russell had teammates who became his brothers for life. Jordan has generated only wary respect and resentful awe. The only people who “ride or die” for Jordan are personal assistants, trainers, and bodyguards: people paid to be in his presence.

If The Last Dance had courage, it would be a cautionary tale instead of a hagiography. It would not only explore the price of greatness, or whatever such branded nonsense. It would be a warning: You don’t need to act this way if you want to win. It’s actually antithetical to what’s best about sports. You can get away with being the bully when you’re the best player on the planet. But being able to bully someone is not the same as a justification to do so. It’s exercising power over someone just for the sake of doing so. That’s not admirable. That’s abusive.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:12 (three years ago) link

that last para some overwrought bollocks

he shouted at teammates and was probably unpleasant to be around at times, and probably fun at other times, let's not pretend he traumatised a bunch of athletes for life or something.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:20 (three years ago) link

ffs " antithetical to what’s best about sports" wtf does that even mean?

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:22 (three years ago) link

yeah idk if the doc is just soft peddling what a jerk he was but c'mon I've played with dudes on softball teams who needled their teammates the same way, I don't really see him crossing the line in any of this

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

as a human tho, Russell>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MJ

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:27 (three years ago) link

i think almost all the alltime greats prob did it w being less of a jerk than jordan not trying to condemn the man or nothin but obvs he was just being an ahole and reveling in it, i mean it mightve been necessary for his process but being that level of jerk is clearly not necessary for or even conducive to athletic achievement in general, being a mild to moderate asshole is obvs common amongst bigtime ballers tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:28 (three years ago) link

i think it's clear jordan's relentless badgering bordered on abusive. frankly watching this doc is slightly claustrophobic for me - jordan's seething, needling, bullying neediness. it's everywhere. he's like a balloon ready to pop. and there are a lot of episodes. it's a really heavy dose. the idea of actually being around that all the time, being the target of that - yikes. when he hands a teammate (who?) some tickets to the game and asks if they need to be good seats, and the guy says 'naw, they can be up next to god' and jordan's like 'you can tell em god gave em to ya' where the joke is that jordan is god - it's like ffs. this comparison's slightly ott but it's a little like how trump manages to make everything about him. you can feel his energy from three planets away. you can't just practice in peace. i love when they ask scottie how the next year was, after mj retired the first time and he breaks into this big grin. 'it was great.'

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:32 (three years ago) link

xp I think this is unfortunately the case more often than not w the "all time greats" in most any field, or among musicians painters writers filmmakers etc anyway

something to do w/ recognizing your talent and feeling an urgency/impatience to have it manifested

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:34 (three years ago) link

being competitive.....

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:37 (three years ago) link

Haven't felt any of what tracer describes watching this doc tbh. The most disturbing/ holy shit thing to me was his off season/space jam workout and practice regimim. How did he not die?

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:41 (three years ago) link

I mean he says that he never asked his teammates to do anything he himself wasn't doing but even if you negate talent it's prob not feasible for 99.9% of actual humans to work that hard.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

And he doesn' t see that cos as far as he' s concerned why can' t they? There's nothing stopping them.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:45 (three years ago) link

this may be just the fact that i have consumed a fair amount of jordan being an asshole content in the past speaking but in the doc all of his teammates even the ones who were defending him acknowledged that he was being a noteworthily huge asshole

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:57 (three years ago) link

as for individual acts yeah a lot of it isnt really that bad but i think its more that hes doing it all the time hes browbeating people, havent finished the latests eps not sure if punching teammates has been covered

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:59 (three years ago) link

this idea that he was doing it purely to motivate ppl is obvs ridiculous, hes styling on his teammates owning the hell out of them cause he can and he likes it, and i mean it is sports but long story short yeah prob pretty unpleasant to be around

lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:02 (three years ago) link

they cover the kerr punch but kerr threw the first blow so that didnt look too bad on mike

Spottie, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:19 (three years ago) link

honestly never knew kerr threw the first punch but mj made it clear he fouled the shit out of him, so that was clearly the instigating factor

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:21 (three years ago) link

this doc has actually made me think he's less of a dick than i thought he was previously.

Spottie, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

same, I kinda forgot how charismatic and funny he was, especially compared to guys like Kobe and LeBron

that said the doc is def edited in his favor

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:34 (three years ago) link

yah its p much a puff piece
