Why do people leave ILX for good?

I don't remember exactly how I found it. I was very active on the Stereolab forum around then, and that may well have been what led me here.

I may have first heard about it through hipinion.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 12:48 (three years ago) link

heyday of blogging iirc, and no twitter yet

plus there were people making a living writing about music.

I found Tom Ewing's Best singles of the 1990s some time in 2000, I think, and was reading Freaky Trigger for a while - my first ILX post was February 2001, though I probably lurked for a bit before then.

i bought my first computer immediately following 9/11 after it became clear that physical media was too slow to keep up with the world. Plus the downloading. I found ILX a few months after.

I joined in 2003 but only really lurked. I properly started posting in 2015 (I think). I don't post enough so always feel vaguely like I'm posting from 'outside the room' as it were. I get this with all forums, tbh.

what happened in 04 that so many ppl seem to have found this place? That's when I got here but can't recall how.

My friend that posted here told me about Geir and how he said Schoenberg ruined music so I joined purely to wind him up about it

I want this to be a true story

Hey Geir, I know you still drop by every now and then. What's less musical in your opinion, twelve-tone serialism or rhythm for rhythm's sake?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

“The return to the board of noted musico-phrenologist geir” may yet be my answer to thread q so steady on pom

Microbes oft teem (wins), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

lol I think I missed the 'phrenologist' part.

Lol it totally is. The first post under my gov't name was me ribbing him for it. I didn't realize the dude very rarely responded to barbs so I lost interest, came back a year later to talk rap and metal.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:20 (three years ago) link

Schoenberg? I thought it was James Brown who ruined music?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:25 (three years ago) link

I started posting in 2005? no idea if I lurked before that, probably not for long if I did. I do feel like a new poster, though I've met a people off board which makes me feel more like an insider.

get up get into it get inverted and retrogade

mark s, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:35 (three years ago) link

I once started an 'end of music' Pandora station based solely on the initial inputs of James Brown and Schoenberg. Geir is a good sort, though; some time ago, I reminded him of some of his earlier ILM pronouncements and he lolled

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:45 (three years ago) link

I like Geir, I think he drops by here from time to time. Some weird opinions, but a good guy.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:46 (three years ago) link

So he's not an actual phrenologist? I'mma need a citation, wins.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 May 2020 13:49 (three years ago) link

everyone who leaves becomes their legend in time, rarely fairly but thats life

spruce springclean (darraghmac), Monday, 11 May 2020 13:55 (three years ago) link

did… did a nude spock write this?

mark s, Monday, 11 May 2020 14:23 (three years ago) link

I said musico-phrenologist which is not an actual thing: I was not being literal

Microbes oft teem (wins), Monday, 11 May 2020 14:28 (three years ago) link

Ah, my bad. I parsed the hyphen as an 'and' instead of a metaphorical qualifier.

Is that around when the Baffler excerpted the MIA thread?

I became a parent so I was under what I call My First Quarantine, don’t know about anybody else.

lol that MIA thread was def one of my first full-on ILM reads

iirc I found this place googling for "Charalambides"

sleeve, Monday, 11 May 2020 15:50 (three years ago) link

yeah i wonder if 2004/5 had an influx bc google still worked properly

The Cognitive Peasant (ogmor), Monday, 11 May 2020 15:52 (three years ago) link

The googlers were great

genital giant (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 May 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

I learned about google on my first professional job, which lasted from 2000 to late 2003. I feel fairly certain I encountered ILX during that time as well, but it seems too early given my posting history.
