If you think it's good then that's great, of course, it's just extremely not for me and definitely did not help me out rn. I had to stop the 3rd episode.

I liked the way that some of the bits eventually pay off into something like a conventional punchline and some of them just leave you hanging. I agree about the anxiety dream thing, it's easy to imagine a sketch like the one with the guy's mate not liking the film he recommended being done with the shorter guy from Limmy's Show as the mate, but it feels so much more claustrophobic without them

soref, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 07:02 (three years ago) link

It does feel weirdly appropriate for the moment, that claustrophobia, though. Lot of people rattling about alone indoors with their thoughts rn. Watched e3 last night and had tears running down my face.

Frankly I think Limmy's enough of a good weirdo that I could imagine him doing this show even w/o quarantine, so it's not been too bad on that front for me.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 11:00 (three years ago) link

it was purely coincidental that this came out now, it was all conceived, commissioned, filmed and scheduled before COVID.

COVID and the Gang (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

It's unnervingly apt

kinder, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

He's basically been doing this solo shut-in stuff ever since limmy's show finished in 2013 so it's hardly some spooky coincidence, just the world has lined up with his neuroses now

limmy was on Tim heidecker's "Office Hours" today which is, for me at least, a real world's collide moment of two of my favourite comedians of the 21st century. haven't watched it yet

gosh why am I not surprised that Lloyd Cole is a tedious and snobbish fucking bell end

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 09:09 (two years ago) link

Why on earth would you read an autobiography by someone you've never heard of before?
Why would you read a book by a comic if you don't understand humour?
Or empathy for that matter?

it's a shitty program (lol, that I frequently listen to!) that wasn't ever likely to be warm towards a Limmy biog. But they seem to be questioning the validity of an oik like that even writing one.

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:21 (two years ago) link

I imagine he was given the book to review? The funniest thing was fat wanker Cole mentioning that he learned Flash too nyah-nyah-nyah, what a tool.

Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:32 (two years ago) link

Yeah it sounds like something from the early 80s and extremely snobby

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:33 (two years ago) link

below in the comments someone is quoting Jerry Sadowitz: "I used to hate Bryan Ferry until I discovered Lloyd Cole"

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:45 (two years ago) link

The perception of Limmy's book I'd picked up elsewhere is that he does come across as a vaguely disquieting empathy void and his partner is quite long-suffering, but those lot come across as such raging wankers on that bit

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 31 July 2021 13:08 (two years ago) link

all sounds quite relatable!

Limmy's gf tweeted "Lloyd Cole was right" shortly after this was aired

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 21:49 (two years ago) link

A mate who is a fan, after reading the book, described him to me as a 'creepy wee gadge' and say it's written poorly.

Isn't this A Good Read? So they're reading it because one of the guests - or the host - liked it and picked it.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 2 August 2021 12:20 (two years ago) link

doesn't she just do general book reviews sometimes? or I might be mixing it up with her other program on WS.

calzino, Monday, 2 August 2021 12:37 (two years ago) link

"Francis Macdonald's pick is the autobiography of the Scottish comedian Limmy"

calzino, Monday, 2 August 2021 12:46 (two years ago) link

that Harriet Gilbert has terrible taste in books and some of the featured authors she has on are so tedious, but the show is just background noise to me while I'm cooking usually.

Sorry to sound like Lloyd Cole up there, but do people really watch 4+ hours of Limmy looking at shit on the internet and talking about it?

fetter, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 17:31 (one year ago) link

Haha, I don‘t get it, but my brother often does when he is working.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 17:33 (one year ago) link

Shit on the internet so much, but I could watch him watching old UK variety and game shows for 420 hours.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:05 (one year ago) link

* not so much

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:05 (one year ago) link

I can watch his stream for ages but it's an on-in-the-background sort of thing usually. There is a yt channel which compiles short (like 1-2 minutes or less) clips too.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:14 (one year ago) link

I enjoy sticking on the old TV 'analysis' or some of the video games he plays for twenty minutes here and there, but there does seem to be a lot of people who hunker down for a focused four-hour stream, which yeah is behaviour that's very alien to me.

I pretty much watch any time it’s on if I’m not in the office, can’t get enough tbh

crisp, Thursday, 5 January 2023 12:31 (one year ago) link

job wouldn't allow me to watch regularly anyway but likewise did get hooked on putting the 80s tv streams on while doing housework over xmas

devvvine, Thursday, 5 January 2023 14:01 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I put it on in the background sometimes. Like NPR but y’know Limmy playing Rust instead of Here and Now.

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 5 January 2023 14:09 (one year ago) link

Would love to see him work the best of his streaming raw material into proper sketches someday because I miss them.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 7 January 2023 18:55 (one year ago) link

Realize he has lots of unresolved challenges but anyway, he has wasted his talents.

Limmy's Show = "The Stone Roses"
Handmade Show & books = Second Coming
Social media stuff = The Seahorses
"Stream me playing Animal Crossing" = Ian Brown's anti-lockdown song

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:28 (one year ago) link

Idk, some of his social media stuff is arguably the pinnacle. Those Vines!

imago, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:33 (one year ago) link

Imo he is best when working with straight actors which gives a reasonable context to his whole thing.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:36 (one year ago) link

He had the promise of a young Steve Martin or Rowan Atkinson. Someone who is just naturally funny with unique body language to express it. He could be making movies by now instead of retreating into a corner.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:45 (one year ago) link

he was unhappy with the pressure of making TV shows, he's much happier doing this

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:48 (one year ago) link

i love that he’s stretching the boundaries of comedy, so glad that he’s embracing streaming and new tech.
