always had a major soft spot for "let there be more light" because side 1 of saucerful of secrets is so much better than i was led to believe as a kid the 'early stuff' is post-syd
― reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 1 May 2020 21:41 (three years ago) link
Led to believe by Pink Floyd themselves.

I first heard Cluster One years after the album came out and found it quite moving - like, it’s pretty second-rate, but after the overblown & vibe-free Momentary Lapse era just hearing them play like they were listening to one another was really nice.
Having said that, I voted for Atom Heart Mother.

was robyn hitchcock's solo piano "astronomy domine" linked on here? or was that just on tyler w's blog? anyway at this point in his career he's probably played it more times than pink floyd... i have a good tape of the soft boys doing it with gilmour on guitar as well.
gary lucas does a pretty good version as well.

voted for In The Flesh? but it's a genuine squeaker over Speak to Me/Breathe
― Bougy! Bougie! Bougé! (Eliza D.), Friday, 1 May 2020 22:42 (three years ago) link
None of these are top PF for me but gotta go with Diamond

Cirrus Minor is lovely, one vote for that

Actually, the first song on The Wall is "Outside the Wall," though it's not listed first.

My initial thought was "One of These Days" but, even though it's by no means a favourite track of mine, "Astronomy Domine" is just such a brilliant way to start an album - and a career.

arnold layne also a fairly brilliant way to start a career

because of the Syd connection, for me, this has to be "shine on you crazy diamond pts 1-5."
― Bee OK, Saturday, 2 May 2020 02:27 (three years ago) link

One Of These Days is such a jam.
But Astronomy Domine is one of the greatest opening tracks on any record ever so.... eat it, Meddle.

voted dogs because it's their best ever moment even though voting for it is clearly cheating
― ufo, Sunday, 3 May 2020 09:26 (three years ago) link
I also cheated, otherwise One of these Days.

Astronomy Domine is one of the greatest songs of all time so this is an easy one for me. The way it basically invented space rock buys still totally rocks. The guitar is just killer.

The Ummagumma version of Astronomy Domine is so fucking great.
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 3 May 2020 23:59 (three years ago) link
If you're counting Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts II through V as part of the opener, it's this definitely.
