For fans of Aperol, I highly recommend a Paper Plane: a variation on a Corpse Reviver, with .75 each of Bourbon, Aperol, Lemon, and Amaro Nonino. Fantastic.

the paper plane recipe sounds good
this thread reminds me that I’ve enjoyed sharing aperol spritzs with friends at sunset on the dock of a rural lake I visit every summer, and that I will probably not get to experience that this summer for the first time in more than 10 years

I like a spritz but prefer it with Campari because that it more bitter and has more bite. There’s always a choice between Aperol and Campari in Italy. They are both made by the Campari company and marketed together in Italy but only the aperol version seems to get the push outside of Italy.
Easy enough to ask a bar tender anywhere to make it with Campari so it’s no biggie.

people tend to make it not cold enough and with shitty prosecco so everything is warm and sticky sweet.

they're great. they're context dependent. when i was sitting on a terrace in milan at 4 pm it was absolutely the right drink for that place and time. but i haven't really had a craving for one since then.

anyone here ever had Bitterol? that was my great regret in Europe, that I didn't buy it when I saw it for cheap in a supermarket

I'm at this moment sipping an negroni comprising Cynar, Aviation gin, a drizzle of Luxardo Maraschino, and sweet vermouth.― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, April 30, 2020 6:05 PM (four hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

Got a grapefruit? Make it a Grand Street.
― jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 03:45 (three years ago) link
Oops, I meant to link this instead, which is the recipe I use. I also just realized that it's Punt e Mes and not ordinary sweet vermouth, but I'm sure it'd be good with whatever.
― jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 03:47 (three years ago) link
Anyway, I like spritzes a lot, but agree that more bitter amari make them more interesting.

Aperol Spritz is fine when you're on holiday and it's a blazing hot early evening but I can't imagine either ordering or making one in this country. Subbing out the Campari for Aperol in a negroni on a hot day is beyond classic.
Paper Plane >>>> any other drink on this thread.
― Matt DC, Friday, 1 May 2020 10:13 (three years ago) link
Subbing it in for simple syrup in an Old Fashioned is also classic if you whack some orange bitters in there as well.

Paper Plane is the first thing I made when I found Nonino and looked up cocktails that used it. Top drink.

Coincidentally saw this thread last night as we were making aperol spritzes, first of the year. With the addition of some homemade ginger syrup.

The NYT published a hot take last year titled "The Aperol Spritz Is Not a Good Drink": https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/09/dining/drinks/aperol-spritz.html

I'll drink one if offered but that fishbowl-sized goblet has always bugged me. Serve it in a regular tumbler like a Negroni.

Highball glass, IMO
― jaymc, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:40 (three years ago) link
oh i remember when that nyt article came out and it was controversial. I agree with it though. aperol spritzes can be good but they got trashed down like mimosas.

articles like that aren't wrong but they crack me up. who the fuck is opening a $30 bottle of pet nat to make a spritz?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:47 (three years ago) link
yeah i don't know why they went with pet nat. They should've just stuck with make sure the sparkling wine bottle says nature or brut.

Tastes like Irn Bru, not a patch on Campari.
― fetter, Friday, 1 May 2020 14:57 (three years ago) link
I just ordered a bottle of campari because of this thread, to mix things up.
Campari and aperol are so much cheaper in chile than the US. ~$10-12 a bottle.

so the Take 3 wasn't bad! I'm glad I drank it now -- it doesn't strike me as a late evening drink.

the best thing i drank in venice was probably sparkling wine on tap, €2 a glass. served with big basket of cheap potato chips.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 1 May 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link
similarly, the best thing I ate in Italy was a small bowl of assorted olives, probably €3

The best thing I ate in Italy was a small piece of bread, slightly toasted. They served it for free.
