this thread reminds me that I’ve enjoyed sharing aperol spritzs with friends at sunset on the dock of a rural lake I visit every summer, and that I will probably not get to experience that this summer for the first time in more than 10 years

I like a spritz but prefer it with Campari because that it more bitter and has more bite. There’s always a choice between Aperol and Campari in Italy. They are both made by the Campari company and marketed together in Italy but only the aperol version seems to get the push outside of Italy.

Easy enough to ask a bar tender anywhere to make it with Campari so it’s no biggie.

people tend to make it not cold enough and with shitty prosecco so everything is warm and sticky sweet.

they're great. they're context dependent. when i was sitting on a terrace in milan at 4 pm it was absolutely the right drink for that place and time. but i haven't really had a craving for one since then.

i guess next time it's warm and i have a free afternoon i should whip one up

Oops, I meant to link this instead, which is the recipe I use. I also just realized that it's Punt e Mes and not ordinary sweet vermouth, but I'm sure it'd be good with whatever.

Anyway, I like spritzes a lot, but agree that more bitter amari make them more interesting.

Aperol Spritz is fine when you're on holiday and it's a blazing hot early evening but I can't imagine either ordering or making one in this country. Subbing out the Campari for Aperol in a negroni on a hot day is beyond classic.

Subbing it in for simple syrup in an Old Fashioned is also classic if you whack some orange bitters in there as well.

Paper Plane is the first thing I made when I found Nonino and looked up cocktails that used it. Top drink.

oh i remember when that nyt article came out and it was controversial. I agree with it though. aperol spritzes can be good but they got trashed down like mimosas.

Campari and aperol are so much cheaper in chile than the US. ~$10-12 a bottle.

dud when you're in Dublin and they're €10+

in Venice you should drink Spriss, Wine Aperol/campari and soda. Should cost €0.50 at most.
