The High Level Ranters, "Four in a Bar" (which I'm assuming is a musical pun, which makes it even better)

... those two covers go nicely together.

I've never contributed anything here but this might be the most consistently satisfying thread I know of. Bless you all.

This one's probably a bit subtle for this thread but I like it...

Chris Rea, "God's Great Banana Skin"

Has this ever been posted here?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/42/Beatles_-_Abbey_Road.jpg

It just hit me that this "iconic" album title and cover is actually horribly unimaginative, literally named after the fucking recording studio and the cover is just them walking on a road. It's not far off from calling a song "Untitled Original." Still one of my favorite records of all time.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 30 November 2020 06:11 (three years ago) link

In 1970, the studio was renamed from EMI in honour of the group's 1969 album Abbey Road.

Is "God's great banana skin" some known expression/metaphor that I'm just not familiar with, or did Rea come up with it himself? What does it even mean?

Tuomas, Monday, 30 November 2020 07:54 (three years ago) link

Ah, it's explained at the Wiki page for the title song:

Rea was inspired to write the song after he noticed his daughter was tempted to laugh at "somebody who'd been giving her a hard time". Rea told John Pidgeon in 1992: "I told her 'don't laugh when people go down even if they've been awful to you because you're tempting God to throw you a banana skin'. It's half moral and half superstition. Anybody who's done me a disservice in life, and I see them go down, you get tempted to laugh. I don't know whether it's superstition or not, or I daren't laugh just in case God throws me a banana skin as well."

Tuomas, Monday, 30 November 2020 07:56 (three years ago) link

xp ok whatever named after the road the studio is on, still extremely uninspired

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 06:30 (three years ago) link

it had no weighted meaning to anyone else before they named the album that though!

huge rant (sic), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 08:51 (three years ago) link

That banana skin just doesn't seem that great imho.

killer cover imo

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 13:20 (three years ago) link

yeah that's extremely weird and striking, and I'm also confused about what the title means - is that an idiom or a play on an idiom?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 14:57 (three years ago) link

he looks feral

all-time cover. terrified me as a kid.

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

in my cover-connections fantasy, i like to imagine that black sabbaths paranoid is his hallucinating POV and this is the reverse shot, as you calmly approach.

"Shel? Shel? Why dont you come inside and have some water bud, OK? Nice and easy"
"grmfmrmrmSWORD?!"

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link

lmao definitely looks like he's in the midst of a trip that's starting to go bad

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

Okay, it turns out I know nothing about Shel Silverstein, I thought he wrote a couple of books for kids and that was about it. What an interesting dude.

emil.y, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link

(I say this not just from the cover posted here, it spurred me on to read more about him)
