Listened to that episode of kye - good stuff right there and interesting to put jp in context of a tradition of people saying these things

Looks like we missed this, uh, heartening piece of news from a month ago:

can't wait until this wet cadaver of a man gets back to squawking into a laptop microphone. the young men of this world need to know what the táin bó cúailnge has to teach us of the perils of masturbating with an empty bag of flamin hot cheetos

Makes sense. He wishes his speaking voice was Tom Waits's singing voice.

Jordan Peterson's New 12 Rules for Being Alive

I am still baffled by this Russia-Serbia thing. I know people who have had to be medically weaned off of benzos and I know it can be kind of a nightmare, but why go to Russia and then Belgrade for treatment?

I'm sorry the guy's obviously had some rough years, but still what a weirdo.

was the severe auto-immune reaction to food the time that he drank cider and felt a sense of impending doom?

Yeah, he has an eating disorder.

It’s odd to me that we live in a time when hoardes of people thought this person—this famished neurotic—was the guy with all the answers.

I hope his followers find a middle path between chaos and order and also stop connecting chaos with “the feminine.” That was the real issue with this guy.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:08 (three years ago) link

oh good, he had the one issue

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:22 (three years ago) link

that thing where he raised his profile by misstating a policy on pronouns by leaning hard into hatred of trans people was just a sidebar I guess

or the handful of other “minor‘ transgressions! just some goofy mythological hand waving and not the mobilization of weird incense and pickup artist types to sell more books

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:26 (three years ago) link

lol incense, meant incels

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:26 (three years ago) link

told young men to clean their rooms while reportedly ignoring his own psychology patients to the extent of checking his own press while they were there for a session, no harm

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:29 (three years ago) link

i think the masculine=order/feminine=chaos thing is at the root of it all though. he was threatened by trans people because they complicated his binary. he wanted to stamp out what he saw as "chaos." that's why he only ate one food.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:30 (three years ago) link

to make myself clear, i think he is bad.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:33 (three years ago) link

I think that’s a holistic analysis that’s not merited

I completely understand the “take this advice, I believe it because I have made my own mistakes — do as I say, not as I do” thing and also the idea of taking someone’s words under advisement regardless of their character and faults but his work isn’t at all divorced from this actions

and that stupid order/chaos thing is just a scapegoat in any case for behavior present and past

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:35 (three years ago) link

I mean he has a wife and a daughter, the accusations of chaos are coming from inside the house

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:36 (three years ago) link

it's not a scapegoat! it's the essence of the reactionary worldview.

to be fair he did have samuel andreyev on as a guest; maybe he just didn't mention him on "oh you've probably never heard of him" grounds.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:37 (three years ago) link

it doesn't diminish the harm of those ideas. i don't understand why you think i am mobilizing a defense of ideas i am ridiculing.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:37 (three years ago) link

also, obviously i am also not saying that people with mental illness shouldn't be listened to. but in this case, the ideas are emerging from the neuroses, directly and without self awareness on his part. they are an expression of paranoia.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:39 (three years ago) link

how is being reactionary not just a matter of pinning a label of “wrong ideas” on what has happened. and making the people with the wrong ideas your scapegoat if you’re that sort of coward?

I mean, unless you think that “women” and “men” are these concepts that exist outside of having ever met real men and women

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

to be fair he did have samuel andreyev on as a guest; maybe he just didn't mention him on "oh you've probably never heard of him" grounds.

He probably likes the idea of Andreyev as a young, white intellectual male artist working within an aesthetic tradition known for its reactionary credentials (except the contemporary classical scene has tended towards the exact opposite of that in recent decades, but I doubt JP knows or cares).

pomenitul, Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

you're calling me a coward because i presented a brief summary of his worldview, which is all about order and hierarchy?

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

I mean, unless you think that “women” and “men” are these concepts that exist outside of having ever met real men and women

do you think i think this? why?

i said that peterson was wrong to project reductive gender archetypes onto everything in the world.

this website is impossible.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

I called JP a coward

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

I am not saying “you” as in “you, Treeship” but I would like to delve into this egocentricism

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:46 (three years ago) link

no idea, that would require me to engage with whatever the fuck his worldview is to a far greater extent than i would willingly do

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:47 (three years ago) link

No idea either tbh, I'm just speculating based on what little I ultimately know of JP.

pomenitul, Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:49 (three years ago) link

I’d also posit that having dietary issues is most commonly addressed by trying an elimination diet in these times, but just eating meat and noticing that seems to work, and also happens to code as aggressively masculine or primal, is something a person would cynically do if they thought it jibed with their public image and incidentally make their stomach work better!

There’s no need to diagnose the guy with a psychological condition because he decided eating all meat is cool.

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:49 (three years ago) link

i think the thing where he said a glass of apple cider caused him to not sleep for a month because he was overcome by a sense of impending doom suggested a disordered relationship with food. i'm sorry.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:51 (three years ago) link

did it really, though? that’s what he said, but he’s a very self-mythologizing person

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:53 (three years ago) link

i think the fact that he believes it did, and would make up that myth, is unusual.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:53 (three years ago) link

do you think people who give self-help advice do not exaggerate or create things out of thin air to enhance their weird credibility?

I mean, an elimination diet practitioner would probably say.. maybe just don’t drink apple cider vinegar

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:55 (three years ago) link

i think i am looking at the nature of the self help advice -- eliminate chaos! -- and drawing a connection to the austerities he imposes on himself, like the all meat diet, or the cold turkey detox off benzos that american doctors apparently don't recommend. (which is why he went to russia).

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:57 (three years ago) link

i am not saying elimination diets are bad. they help a lot of people.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 00:58 (three years ago) link

sure! he might be going with some self-consistent brand of ideological purity but I think it’s a big loop where he’s playing to his own press in order to feed his own mythology

I mean, good on him for believing benzos are useful sometimes, but if was going to acknowledge that then.. well, you get it

solo scampito (mh), Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:01 (three years ago) link

i mean, fine. i don't think someone who was tolerant and easygoing would write the books this guy has just cynically for money. i think that is more of a stretch than saying his ideas probably bear some connection to his personality.

treeship., Thursday, 6 August 2020 01:04 (three years ago) link

and ideas aside, as a person he seems miserable, fearful and prone to dramatic exaggeration. he actually isn't this swaggering carnivore with a gift for putting people at ease, or whatever masculine archetype you'd think his followers would want to embody. he's something like the opposite of that so it's odd to me that so many people put their faith in his advice.
