“Drawing shitty pictures of drums cheers me up. Whenever I feel low, I draw some new pictures of shitty drums.”

> rope drumhead tensioning that was becoming obsolete in the 19th century

This is fascinating, because the visual trope is a constant in illustrations of toy soldiers, the little drummer boy, etc. It seems to carry over into images of trap sets, even though there was no overlap.

Julius Caesar Memento Hoodie (bendy), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

Exactly. I am sure there are rope-tension aficionados, just as there are animal skin-head aficionados. But Ringo was neither of those.

So many good details! Appropriate number of strings, p90 pickups, a bigsby tailpiece.

Then you got the instrument cable coming out of the lower horn.

it was 1967, i imagine a fair proportion of guitar players were used to seeing all kinds of psychedelic weirdness when they looked down at their fretboard at that time

More than anything, the left hand placement and "activity" is just a disaster. I don't think the rest of the guitar is that bad actually, I mean there's six tuning pegs, it looks like a Jag with a glandular problem more than anything.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 15 June 2020 09:21 (three years ago) link

for real that is a Telecaster body he's apparently trying to stab with a Strat neck - one cutaway, control plate with knobs and switch in a line. Art guy you're doing an illustration for the FUCKING FENDER catalogue, how do you get their two iconic models jumbled up?

assert (MatthewK), Monday, 15 June 2020 12:25 (three years ago) link

haha yeah I mean if that was just some drawing in a magazine it's whatever but the fucking catalogue guy can't even get it right lol

flappy bird, Monday, 15 June 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

is there a thread for particularly egregious examples of actors faking playing guitar? Drives me insane. rewatched I'm Not There fairly recently-- Christian Bale, naturally, could clearly play. Cate Blanchett, meanwhile, does this shit:

flappy bird, Monday, 15 June 2020 19:41 (three years ago) link

I am willing - just barely - to allow that the Fender catalog illustrations were meant to be impressionistic on purpose. Otherwise they could just have used photographs. So including elements of several iconic guitar designs could have either been acceptable, or even desired.

I don't get the point of a Tele with humbuckers. Isn't the original design's distinctive single-coil sound whole point of having one, at least nowadays? That's why I own a Strat and an SG.

Soz (Not Soz) (Vast Halo), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link

Soz (Not Soz) (Vast Halo), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link

I have a Tele with singles too, but these pickups are like glassy Fender neck pickups more than PAFs.
Plus Teles are nicer to play and indestructible.

Yeah, it's a reasonable compromise. Plus, for whatever reason, they look like less of an abomination than a Fat Strat. (shudders)

Soz (Not Soz) (Vast Halo), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 13:29 (three years ago) link

When you get into the details of the original Fender WR humbucker pickup design from the 70s, there's something to the original copper/nickel/iron magnets in them that's tonally separate from other humbuckng pickups of the era and completely different from the HBs that Fender uses now.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 19 June 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

Yep - the idea was to use a machineable ferromagnetic alloy so that you could have magnet polepieces (the Fender sound) but they could also be screwed up and down (a humbucker principle, since Seth Lover did both these and the Gibson PAFs). CuNiFe is machineable with a screw thread (AlNiCo would chip and shatter), but wasn't commercially available after the 70s so they stopped using it. Demand from the boutique pickup market brought it back maybe 5 years ago?

Kind of gets worse as it gets into the body, also looks like the artist gave up on the picking hand.

How's that record?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 13 July 2021 15:24 (two years ago) link

I love that you used to be able to send away for a glossy art print of many Kudu/CTI titles.

And while I love Gale's playing, this one gets too smooth in places for me (Bob James arranged and plays keys.)
