With long threads as well as 'Skipping xxxx messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all, 'can we have a 'view previous 100 messages' as otherwise alternative is to load the full thread?

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 16 April 2020 18:16 (four years ago) link

I would accept the ban as a show of good faith

i always thought the quality of the necrothreads was one thing that set ILX apart. i do see it as a resource for the future, or an archive

yeah this

Would love a 'view previous 100 messages' tho

archive all threads that haven't been posted in for over 6 months

You might want to register at Reddit!

☮️ (peace, man), Thursday, 16 April 2020 18:34 (four years ago) link

Agree, I like it when a thread is revived and I see something that I posted 17 yrs ago. Did I really say that? What was I thinking? Which office was I sitting in when I posted it? Only ILX gives this.

fetter, Thursday, 16 April 2020 18:47 (four years ago) link

it's what makes it a unique imo - a community that is still in conversation with its past. or re-evaluating it, however you want to frame it

"archive all threads that haven't been posted in for over 6 months"

Not at all, plenty to discover especially in regards to anything to do with books, music and film. I definitely use it to look at/htrash/refine any views I've had as I learn along.

The Biden thread will be a trip in a few years from now (assuming he'll win).

I just want to say my own idea up thread about ranked polls is the best idea for ilx itt

ogmor, Thursday, 16 April 2020 19:03 (four years ago) link

The worst thing reddit and Twitter did to the idea of forums/blogging is making ‘the conversation’ an hour long and then basically disappearing.

"I just want to say my own idea up thread about ranked polls is the best idea for ilx itt"

Sure, ranked choice is an overdue reform but what we REALLY need to do is abolish the POLLectoral College that makes votes from some places count more than others.

Fleetwood Machiavelli (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 16 April 2020 20:58 (four years ago) link

uh sorry for trolling. I thought my post was pretty clearly tongue-in-cheek, and I don't actually want to break ilx just yet! I've lurked/posted on too many boards where the mods carried on like overambitious housekeepers*, so I appreciate the fact that conversations are allowed to evolve naturally on a scale of eons rather than being policed for "thread drift" or archived into oblivion

*including one autocratic mod who, upon disagreeing with another poster, uses his editing powers to insert his counterargument IN ALL CAPS right in the body of their post

i always thought the quality of the necrothreads was one thing that set ILX apart. i do see it as a resource for the future, or an archive

if there needs to be a debate about this, it can happen in this thread.

i’m too angry to say much beyond: i thought it went without saying that as a community we use discretion in what threads are appropriate to revive. amplifying hate speech in the service of a cheap joke should get you banned from the board, period.

I see what thread was bumped (as an attempt to lightly dunk on something Karl said itt) looks like a mod deleted it. probably for the best

weirdly enough Pashmina was the OG poster in it (under his Xtian name)

yeah, it's called "this guy was me", the first track on side two of the 1989 cassette "parrots on fire" by the algy krebbs quartet, underrated jam

i'm frankly disappointed at how often i agree with myself

i have no idea what happened, or what i said that got dunked on, or what thread was revived, or whether or not it was deleted. if it was something really dumb i said a long time ago on a thread, revived, then i'm pretty certain i deserve it. i just spent 4 hours arguing with my mom, trying to get her to own up to a single fucked up thing that she and my dad did, and completely failed. all i wanted was for her to just tell the truth, about anything really, and she couldn't do it. so if someone revived something i said that was ignorant and ugly, i'm definitely not proud of it, but at least i will own up to it and say that i did it and that if it feels cringey and terrible now, at least that means i'm not that same person anymore

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 17 April 2020 05:54 (four years ago) link

oh no :(. i'm so sorry Karl.

this is where I wish I had been more specific. so, without naming the thread itself, which you can't even search for on ILX anymore, there was a thread with a transphobic title (from the wee early days of ILX). you didn't post in it, to my knowledge.

but Whiney took your quote about necrothreads and bumped that thread with that quote, I guess to say "u sure our necrothreads are high quality"?

but budo called him on it, and somehow they were deleted.

u did nothin wrong dogg.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 April 2020 06:08 (four years ago) link

don't agree that deleting evidence of community consciousness changing is a great way to represent the change fwiw

I guess being a snide dick to someone now on an old dickish thread is a good way to show that ppl used to and can still be dicks, though

donald failson (sic), Friday, 17 April 2020 07:47 (four years ago) link

Searching by date without any other search criteria - like let me see threads started in a date range.

Also while I'm on date searching - the date fields on mobile bring up a calendar instead of allowing text entry, meaning if I want to search by date for something from 2006 I need to click the back-a-month button 100 times.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Friday, 17 April 2020 11:41 (four years ago) link

Then when I move to the next date field (for a BETWEEN search) it defaults to today's date so I have to click it another 90 odd times.

idk, i read soda's post in the thread delete request topic and assumed the thread was actually deleted

commendations to the mods for addressing the issue so rapidly. i did see the thread in question because i didn't click on it or pay much attention to the title because my whiney-sense tells me that i probably shouldn't click on any thread he's bumped. honestly didn't register with me that it was transphobic. again thanks to soda; i'm grateful to not have had to be confronted with that old bullshit firsthand.

unfortunately i guess a side effect of that is that it's maybe a bit tricky to piece together what actually happened, but karl, trust me, it was nothing you did.

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 17 April 2020 14:23 (four years ago) link

1 - click permalink on the first post AFTER the cutoff (the one you want to scroll back from)
2 - On that new page where that post is the first post shown, decrease the number in the URL that's "bookmarkedmessageid=xxxxxx" Usually dropping it by 200 or 300 will be enough to get you back to where you want, sometimes you have to lower it by 1000 or so. So for instance your message the messageid=7539647, so if I were to lower that to 7539347 it would load messages starting 300 posts back. I believe that post number is site-wide, so that's "300 posts back" counting all posts made on ILX, not this thread.
