The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 April 2020 08:10 (four years ago) link

I think he probably racked up a few by repeatedly calling an abuse victim a liar in one of the 184 US politics threads.

Oh right, still banging on about that was he? Fool to himself.

That was a week ago, dunno what the last thing that pushed him over the edge was. Fair play hitting 51 in these days of 30 active users.

Turned out he kept going on the Biden thread. Also someone revived one of the Ban Fred threads which probably helped.

three months pass...

Sunday, August 9, 2020 5:08 PM Site calzino has been banned permanently. Time out. Stabbing fantasies and repellent imagery are not OK.

Permanently, really?!

I can think of quite a few world leaders for whom stabbing fantasies and repellant imagery would seem to be pretty understandable tbh.

Permanently, really?!

"permanently" is what System says when a ban is issued, the mod has evidently made a note immediately afterward

calz was recently crowing about various ilx0rs being made unemployed and saying it should be a permanent situation, and has rarely seemed to hold back one-on-one - was it world leaders or regular people that were being imagined stabbed in this instance?

Steppin' RZA (sic), Monday, 10 August 2020 08:35 (three years ago) link

Really, where was the unemployed stuff?

let them microwave their rice (gyac), Monday, 10 August 2020 08:51 (three years ago) link

I must have missed that, too. Calz didn't pull punches but iirc The Man was always the enemy, not other users of the board.

Mod(s) owe an explanation to why now, because of what posts imo.

Talking about members of the music press on various threads, including at least one specific ex-ilx0r by name.

Mod(s) owe an explanation to why now

obv I'm curious too, but I don't reckon mods owe us anything, and it's not hard to imagine calzine rhetoric being deemed "heated" in any given exchange. his baseline is splenetic enough when you agree with his principles or specifics and are familiar enough to know he means well - imagine just wandering into a thread when he's in full flight

Or are you saying that’s who the bannable comment was aimed at? In that case I disagree, obviously, but defend calz’s right (and mine) to call the man a prick.

let them microwave their rice (gyac), Monday, 10 August 2020 09:31 (three years ago) link

Must be, because I can't see anything "pro-abuser" by Calz or anyone else on there

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 August 2020 09:31 (three years ago) link

I think there's a cultural divide here, like Calz is an overexcitable slightly autistic dude engaging in the specifically Northern British cultural comedic practice of 'over-swearing'. He's like the Mr Agreeable of UK Politics and I think UK people recognise that he's using ILX as a one-man Punch and Judy show of hitting policemen over the head with their own truncheons or strings of sausages or whatever is to hand.

I have seen people push back at him multiple times over the years, including myself, and told him to knock it off, and he has almost universally come back and apologised when he realises the over-swearing has gone over the line.

He is sweary, yes, in the way that British comedy is often very sweary. But he is not one of the abusive posters of ILX, not by a long shot.

No idea about the bannable stuff / crowing about multiple ilx0rs, current and ex, losing work and hoping it happened to more of them / I don't get more than max 1.02% of the arcane specifics of the beefs-in-principle against one named ex-poster, but if wishing someone permanent unemployment in all fields because they're kind of doofily centrist and pie-in-the-sky as a self-employed political commentator is what's happening then: fine, I'm just saying it reads as harsh in passing

I'm not arguing calz is an abusive poster! Just giving examples of how a completely casual reader might just possibly read him as heated, or a mod might take stabby stab posts as warranting a brief cool-down.

So Calz was gulag'd because a mod for some reason felt an example needed to be set, and chose to build the gulag out of completely random and dime a dozen calz-banter posts. Stern stuff.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Monday, 10 August 2020 10:16 (three years ago) link

I think UK people recognise that he's using ILX as a one-man Punch and Judy show of hitting policemen over the head with their own truncheons or strings of sausages or whatever is to hand.

Punch no longer beats up his wife, even that kind of humour is changing. In the world where Jo Cox gets murdered by an internet hardman I'm just not that interested in this being a place where people can post graphically their dreams about the murder of left-wing (or any wing!) politicians.

We've been dealing with that for a while by just editing Calz posts, because we also get everything else you're saying. But he continues to get FPs and while I don't know exactly which post trigged this timeout, I'm going to give the mods the benefit of the doubt and assume it crossed even those extended lines he's been given.

I have seen people push back at him multiple times over the years

This is not a good defence, imo. "You should be strong enough to take it and strong enough to shout back at these people if you don't like it" is a pretty terrible way to foster an inclusive forum. Sure, some people will shout back. More will just leave, quietly.

stet, Monday, 10 August 2020 10:56 (three years ago) link

I have some very specific criticism of double standards around how that is applied, but I'm going to choose to walk away here. Have a lovely day.

treeship., Monday, 10 August 2020 12:39 (three years ago) link

FWIW it was me who edited the post and it contained a specific reference to stabbing a prominent UK politician in a way that was substantively different to most of what he posts - and I generally agree with Branwell's viewpoint. Another mod felt like more was required and dropped a temp ban and I respect that decision.

The post was substantively different to calling the guy a dick or celebrating a job loss usual ILX sweariness or venting - if I thought Calzino was genuinely harbouring violent death fantasies he wouldn't be coming back, that goes without saying, I think he just took is usual thing a bit too far. But in the current climate that sort of thing is unacceptable here. It bears repeating this isn't a permanent ban and more of the kind of warning that people were requesting - "here's the line, don't cross it again". It will be lifted in two days.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 August 2020 12:52 (three years ago) link

Hi, I made the call to ban calzino for three days if people want to shout at me. I have literally no history with the dude and know nothing about his personal life at all. In another thread Matt said "I'm aware he's got a lot of offboard shit going on", well, I'm not, I have no idea. Does that matter? What I do have an idea of is that repeatedly posting death threats and really gross sexual imagery is something that's not OK, and fuck having that on the boards. I'm honestly surprised at some of the people defending this behaviour, and obviously there are personal relationships behind the scenes that I'm unaware, but it strikes me as pretty hypocritical coming from some of you.

emil.y, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:26 (three years ago) link

*that I'm unaware OF.

emil.y, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:26 (three years ago) link

I don't judge.

Likewise, although I do sometimes wonder whether the barely contained rage is good for calz in the long run.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:45 (three years ago) link

I've taken your prompt to delete that post b/c it's a lot of highly personal information to post about another user even if they have posted it themselves in the past (there was a lot I didn't know in there). Deleted posts are still visible to mods so if Emily hasn't read it yet she'll still be able to, and ultimately it was addressed to her.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:51 (three years ago) link

OK, sure. It was a long time ago, and a lot of people have clearly forgotten. But sometimes people's rage is genuinely justified, and if they have only one place and one way of processing that rage...

Branwell with an N, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:53 (three years ago) link

To Branwell: That is fucking heavy, and does add context, thank you. I was going to say that the ban is due to be lifted tomorrow so calzino could choose whether it should be deleted or not, but I think Matt's call is probably a good one. I maintain that the behaviour warrants a temp ban, though. I realise that there is an issue with how to moderate consistently in a culture where some aggressive posters are much-beloved, but personally I want to see a move to these smaller time-outs to try to make things less fucked-up, not more.

emil.y, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:55 (three years ago) link

Thanks for removing that post Matt DC. I don't think bringing in personal information (shared without asking permission of said banned user, I'm guessing) is the way to go here, even if it's to show context.
