I'd rather fuck a frog than play Animal Crossing.

then get out there and fuck that frog like it's the last one you'll ever "know", in the biblical sense

I'm going through Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U with my 5-year old son, it's a remarkably well-designed game

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

did we ever figure out if that's getting remastered on the new switch collection thing, or is that going to be a separate standalone remaster?

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:06 (four years ago) link

the reporting made it sound like SM3DWDX would be a standalone remaster

silby, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:09 (four years ago) link

there's no way to transfer that + New Super Mario Bros. U to the Switch is there? hate having 2 consoles hooked up but I'm not paying another $59.99 for this

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

I'm a big Odyssey detractor, tbh! Lots of great moments, esp the climax of New Donk City stage, but the primary currency of the game (moons) is so grossly inflated that there is no feeling of accomplishment when you stumble over a random rock and A Moon Appears!

It's like if Zelda was focused solely on acquiring Korok seeds

I've been reading a few of "let's rank all the Mario games" articles recently and I'm frankly surprised to see the way people rank them-- any list that doesn't put 3. Super Mario World 2. Super Mario 64 1. Super Mario 3 as their top three is mysterious and bizarre to me

xxpost I *think* the Switch is pretty well locked down, but the system is new enough (and still under warranty enough, I think) that I don't want to mess with it just yet. I amassed a ton of games on an external drive for the Wii, but of course, there is no longer an easy way to hook my Wii to my TV, so so much for all that.

lol Korok seeds. I ended up absolutely loving that game, but off the top of my head I can't remember what the Korok seeds were used for. Buying things? Upgrading things? I know I never really made a point of searching for them unless I had to.

there's not, and you will, but you can always hope that Nintendo takes the Switch's success to heart and makes the whole library compatible with the Switch 2 in…2024 or whatever

despite me giving it a 9.2 pitchfork scale rating, in the pantheon of mario games it's probably like in the 5th-10th greatest range, for me. which to be clear, is still a great game imo

@Josh: gives you more item slots I think.

silby, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:31 (four years ago) link

not gonna accuse y'all of boomerism but come on the modern games are better than the old ones

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link

xp i would, but i only feel comfortable doing that when no one is home, and lately, my partner is always home :)

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:38 (four years ago) link

but thank you, that's very nice. i haven't really streamed a game for several months now!

I think my main problem with Odyssey is that it rarely gives me the illusion that I'm really good at it.

lukas, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:49 (four years ago) link

xp frogbs I admit that I’m a 2d fan, in general, over 3d platforms. For me, the core of Mario perfection is about control, the platonic ideal of the Jump, and in general just feeling like I’m making Mario do the exact thing that I want him to do.

I get more of those good control feelings with 2d Mario. It’s still very good with 3D, but I find myself “missing” a lot more

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:52 (four years ago) link

yes exactly

lukas, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

I know what you mean but I think the recent 2-D games replicate that quite well & the level design is more innovative. plus, y'know, multiplayer

the built-in levels for Super Mario Maker 2 eclipse the originals, imo. would be cool if they just did like, a new set of SMB 3 levels using the new designers

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:58 (four years ago) link

a new set of SMB 3 levels using the new designers

the best parts of new super mario bros feel like that, it's so good!

otm. SMM2 encapsulates all of these old games in one spot and adds creativity and online fun. it is more phenomenon than game, probably the best 2D mario to ever exist.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 3 April 2020 18:13 (four years ago) link

I really want the eventual next 2D Mario to take lessons from the masocore platformers through Celeste and move towards short, linked-together levels, with quick deaths and restarts

silby, Friday, 3 April 2020 18:15 (four years ago) link

Might be cool if quick death and restart were a powerup

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 3 April 2020 18:20 (four years ago) link

hit a brick, get a snow cap, celeste rules for 1 minute

i like 3d mario if u think about it thats one more d

1. smb3: i watched The Wizard in the theater.
2. smb2: Maybe the most goth of all the mario bros games.
3. smb: "Minus level" is extremely a part of my interior lizard brain.
4. smw: Very good game but verging toward overly polished / obligatory. Creativity is starting to wane.
5. smw2: I'm sure I must have played this as a kid but I barely remember it.
6. Mario Bros the arcade game is pretty fun even now.
7. lost levels: played maybe half of these a kid? Maybe less?
8. 64: barely played it because i stopped playing video games at this point. the 3d looked bad even then but i guess it's charming now.
9. odyssey: watched someone play some of this once. not bad
10. new super mario bros: is this the one where you can knock each other into pits? horrible multiplayer experience
others: haven't played 'em

no mention of Sunshine here, which was pretty flawed and buggy but also had a lot of cool features

lost levels is pretty insane, I remember staying up until 5 AM with a friend to try to beat it. even with the 1-1 koopa shell/255 life trick we struggled to make it past World 6. it's just so touchy. sort of ahead of its time I guess, considering all the popular Mario Maker levels

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 18:46 (four years ago) link

64 is the best imho surprised u all arent rating

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 18:54 (four years ago) link

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 18:55 (four years ago) link

odessey not having running was the worst part of it for me i kept instinctively trying to find the button lol

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:01 (four years ago) link

my other complaint is that it doesnt have a sledding race, that bounding shit was wack

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:05 (four years ago) link

riding the stone lion taxi was cool cause it was pretty difficult

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:06 (four years ago) link

I def factor in the context when rating games like this, one could argue that SMM2 is superior in level design to SMB3 but I’m sorry there is NO comparison... SMB3 was a marvellously innovative achievement, technologically perfect, and was an adventure that spanned many worlds and required a great deal of work to complete. SMM2? You’re building a castle, it feels like you’re on a factory line.

Same goes for Mario 64– it’s gameplay is so incredible, the level design so innovative, it redefined 3D gaming afaik

1 SMB3
2 Mario 64
3 Super Mario World
4 Galaxy 2
5 Galaxy
6 Yoshi’s Island
7 Odyssey
8 SMB
9 SMB 2
10 SMM2
11 Land
12 Land 2

Those are all the ones I’ve played and I enjoy/loved them all. Never played Sunshine, I hear 3D World is amazing. I played the new 2.5D ones and found the controls consistently sluggish. Surprised that people don’t rate the Galaxies higher, surprised that people don’t stan for Land as they should

a race themed mario wld be sick where like the mario cart crew are doing a season but then they have to have an adventure........idk just spitballin

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link

my ideal mario wld have the speed/movement of 64 w the graphics and creativity of the newer 3d ones

3D world is kinda like that, its got the long jumps, wall kicks, backflips and all that

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:14 (four years ago) link

yeah i havent played that one or galaxy 2 hope they come 2 switch

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:18 (four years ago) link

a thorough remastering of 64 w new levels also shd happen

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:19 (four years ago) link

eh it's not really Nintendo's thing to add new levels to old games, as awesome as that would be

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:22 (four years ago) link

they did it for the ds port

lag∞n, Friday, 3 April 2020 19:23 (four years ago) link

you can't judge SMM2 on the story mode alone. It would be lame to choose Big Ones as your favorite Aerosmith album. But what if the release of Big Ones included all of the tracks, time sliced, allowing you to make your own Even Bigger Ones.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 3 April 2020 19:38 (four years ago) link

its nuts they haven't done a bunch of DLC for that game yet
