I've never heard of that White Album on white vinyl. Ha!

Why, I would make a fantastic Nero! (PBKR), Friday, 3 April 2020 02:03 (four years ago) link

The weird thing is that I didn't know it was on white vinyl until after I bought it. Music Mart (RIP) in Costa Mesa just reshrinkwrapped a promo version and put it out on the floor.

two weeks pass...

I've never cared to do any discogs edit but I came across a version of a Swirlies 7" that isn't there... I feel like I could figure out creating the entry but I'm a little intimidated by it. Everything is relatively clear expect the part about how to add a version of a release rather than a standalone. Anyone have experience with this?

I suggest a Discogs forum for this question.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:00 (three years ago) link

this explains it just as well as i could, and with pictures:

https://blog.discogs.com/en/getting-your-records-submitted-faster-without-having-to-start-from-scratch/

if you're having a hard time with any of that i'm happy to help / clarify

budo jeru, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

I sympathise. I was all ready to add the new Cowboy Junkies album but I got stuck on which format to use, since it's only available on streaming services, not as a CD or a download. A quick look at the discogs forum confirms that albums only released on streaming services are not eligible for inclusion, since it's not possible to "own" them. Which leaves the Cowboy Junkies discography on discogs sadly incomplete.

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

you should just make bootleg CD-R versions of all the streaming-only stuff and then list them as placeholders until the band has the good sense to actually release their records, at which point some future nerd can merge those releases with yours

budo jeru, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:15 (three years ago) link

it’s not incomplete if they didn’t release it. streaming only is dumb.

brimstead, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

some future nerd will probably not enjoy having to delete some random homemade CD-R from the database

brimstead, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

it was a joke you dork

no you're dumb, why is streaming it not releasing it?

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 22:18 (three years ago) link

This thread is so 2020 right now

ravedeaf nineHEIN?seventyWHO? (Craig D.), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 23:13 (three years ago) link

so bands as “big” as the cowboy junkies are just streaming albums now, not releasing them? that’s totally awesome.

brimstead, Wednesday, 22 April 2020 04:01 (three years ago) link

fine call it “releasing”, whatever

Thanks for sharing! Wow you're pretty active in the comments. Some hot takes there notably in your praise of Slovenly!

Evan, Wednesday, 22 April 2020 17:48 (three years ago) link

https://discogs.page.link/1a9Q <- does that work? Not really complete as I put all my collection into CLZ collector before I realised Discogs would be much better, and couldn’t face having to do it all again. Will get round to it at some point but for now this is mainly new purchases and a few of the bigger box sets and stuff.

Hey Ant1973 how's that Blue Notebook reissue? I really liked that album a lot when it came out. Should revisit.

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

I loved the Blue Notebooks when i came out, but I feel like it's been so completely subsumed into tv/movie soundtracks that there's no need to re-listen to it now... it's just kinda ambient in the culture at this point.

enochroot, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:35 (three years ago) link

Yeah I have a general aversion to music that specifically sounds like a doctor drama theme. That being said, where has Blue Notebooks shown up?

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link

I don't use Discogs to log my collection, so here's my seller profile, sorted from priciest downwards.

The most valuable record I own is the UK 7-inch promo of Martha Reeves - No One There, which I don't plan to sell unless I'm in dire financial need.

starting to add stuff now (thanks to the bar code scanner, that is a great feature), are those condition/notes fields not outward facing? did I really just write a bunch of notes that nobody can see??

frogbs we have a lot of overlap

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 01:22 (three years ago) link

sheesh, that's tough. I think Denki Groove's VOXXX may be it, that's a legitimately hard to find record from a group with basically zero presence in this country

from a personal standpoint maybe Datarock's Red? I saw them in 2009 and got right up front & the lead singer pulled me on up on stage for a couple tunes. bought the record and they all signed it. later got to party & smoke with them in some nightclub. unfortunately it doesn't play too well because my kids love it and have gotten fingerprints and scratches all over it

frogbs, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 01:22 (three years ago) link

hit me up with some recs then :)

Hmm feeling a bit lonely as a music fan I think.

It's nice to feel like my passions are 100% due to my own explorations and not due to getting swept up in popular trends, but on the other hand I find chances to geek out with people over this stuff really hard to come by.

Obsessions:
- 80s-90s indie "pop perfection" (Sarah / Drive-in / Slumberland / Flying Nun)
- 90s American style indie rock (post-Sonic Youth / "bedroom" / shoegaze)
- Experimental / Ambient Balearic
- American Primitive

I've got to work really hard to gush about the little known Pam Berry side project 7" over here and the versatility of the Minecraft soundtracks as arguably legitimate ambient music outside gaming nerd context over there...

hit me up with some recs then :)

Psychic Paramount (noisy jammy krauty textured loud guitar & drums music)
Dead Skeletons (groovy droney gothy dance-trance music)
Oneida (krauty noisy post-Sonic Youth music, best before 2011)
Field Music (somewhere between early XTC and 80s Yes? Earlier albums better)

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Monday, 19 October 2020 19:13 (three years ago) link

Evan, Monday, 19 October 2020 19:23 (three years ago) link

but yeah I do know of Field Music - not sure what I think of them yet. very clearly up my alley yet I've had trouble connecting with their music

Oneida I've heard one album by, remember liking it so I'll dig deeper

other two I've never heard of and will check out

thanks

can I just say that the wantlist is evil, one day you get a message saying that some store in Japan has 6 records you want and by the way if you order them all you'll save a bunch on shipping! long story short I've got a bunch of "never thought I'd own this" records coming to my house soon

My problem is I get excited about discovering the low price/value of something I want, only to find out all the cheap copies are in Spain or Germany or whatever and shipping is $25 for the first LP. By the time you find a US seller down the list the price is 4x higher.

Evan, Monday, 19 October 2020 20:16 (three years ago) link

this from my wantlist made me laugh

8.80 USD
Media: P
Sleeve: NM or M-
LP: Cracked and broken ... COVER: In full shrink wrap, almost like new.
