I'm someone who regularly fantasizes about taking a hot bath affixed to the top of the world's slowest steamroller, everyone I dislike is tied down in front of the steamroller and I can listen to the music of them being turned to mush and the screams of the hundreds who are ahead.

that sounds like a 'you' problem rather than something afflicting the person with a guillotine avatar

Most people don’t have extremely detailed violent fantasies, even people who joke about putting Jeff Bezos’s head on a pike outside the city gates.

Peeing in the shower does not feel good, the lack of contrast between my urine and the water is unsettling.

I'll say it again: it's amazing how poor twitter and instagram are for browsing. I'm irritated within a short time of being there.

sorry, i meant browse ig and twitter

I also used it on a tablet (which uses mobile mode) and I didn't like it but maybe it's great on an actual phone.

three weeks pass...

Envy is one of those unavoidable human traits I nevertheless consciously try to avoid. I don't find it useful, productive or endearing to be envious of people or to compare myself to others: We all walk our own paths, right? We all have our good and bad days, our pros and cons. If someone is doing well for themselves and it doesn't affect my own or anyone else's wellbeing, then why should I feel anything but gladness and pride for them?

But since I've started to promote nights again, I've had to use Instagram a lot more. I'm telling you, it takes only about five minutes of scrolling before I start to feel preternaturally low about myself and, I dare say, a small amount of resentment towards the people making me feel this way.

It's almost... as if... social media is an opiate designed to make people feel tremendously insecure about themselves while also hooking them in like a drug. Now there's an original thought.

I've recently been on Twitter a bit too and man, that place doesn't really make me feel 'envious' in the same way but it does make me feel like I ought to have strong opinions on topics and matters I otherwise wouldn't necessarily consider. And then presently I feel like less of a person because I haven't got a hot take about the new Ghostbusters movie, or what some judge in Texas has decreed, or what some rightwing loudmouth has to say about gender pronouns. It's a bombardment of information and opinions and arguments and it makes the world seem even more bonkers and noisy and horrid than it already is. It makes me feel small, worthless, clueless: less of a person for not getting stuck into these endless discussions.

This might sound strange coming from someone who has spent more than half his life on ILX and is an obsessive Facebooker. But on those platforms I don't really get these feelings of self-loathing, envy, or a push-pull desire to participate in a dog-race I'll never win.

I don't personally understand why someone would leave Facebook but stay on Instagram. Whatever floats your boat ofc, but for all its faults, with FB I feel like I'm in a fairly safe, relatively private space where I talk just to people I know or visit groups that discuss topics I'm interested in; whereas I feel like the other two big platforms seem to be more about surreptitious self promotion: With Insta it's about what a wonderful life you live, Twitter it's how clever and informed you are. Those two seem to be about guerilla oneupmanship, and that's why I can't really enjoy them too much

I’m not on Twitter much and Facebook not at all, but insta is great if you have (or stumble upon) niche interests, like miniatures, or Japanese storefront photography, or pixel art, and so on.

calstars, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 01:28 (two years ago) link

Insta also frustrates me in that it's finicky about almost everything. The images have to be a certain size; you can't link to external things; you can't copy/download images or reshare them if you like them. Plus the UI is so fiddly. It tells me a while bunch of people liked a video I uploaded but I can't seem to be able to get a list of those users when I click. Also it often tela me I have notifications when I don't... That's all by the by though

the fact that you actually have to get and pay for separate services to actually use instagram as a website is fucking nuts tbh.

i completely agree that instagram is worse than facebook. just a nightmare to use and so much more staring-into-the-abyss than facebook. n.b. i've been pretty hardcore about only being friends with people who aren't annoying in what they post on fb, no family of origin allowed, no randoms from work or school, and it's actually not terrible? no one in the dj world in my town uses facebook anymore though, so i'm stuck with the devolution that is instagram.

Instagram is for images. That’s how it started. It doesn’t work well for anything that isn’t based around an image

I guess I’ll try to respond to each of these gripes.

Sizes can be 1x1 or expanded to 4x5 veritical or I believe 3:2 horizontally. You can also add borders via a third party app to get to the sizes above.

You can link to external sites in your bio.

You can screenshot images and thus copy / download. (No they’re not providing the original file uploaded, nor would an artist necessarily want that to be possible )

You can see who liked a photo by clicking on the like count.

Links not allowed in the post drives me mad. Poking about on the bio then going to a linktree page then finding what you're after. I agree, Insta is infuriating.
Hope you're ok DL, I use IG superficially and tend to just be shown nice stuff that's nice to look at but I can see nonsense trying to get in at the edges.

xxp I get MAD when shops/restaurants update opening hours/ relevant practical information on Insta and not their actual website!

map, it's weird that all the music and dj people have emigrated to Instagram considering it's not really made for sharing music or events. I'm constantly having to adjust and refigure my flyers to fit to Instagram's fussy aspect ratios.

music is awful for instagram. i use it with sound off almost exclusively. i'm so out of touch that i've never used tik tok, but if i were doing sound/music stuff i would migrate to one where "sound on" is the default expectation, not something you have to ask people to do

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 15:45 (two years ago) link

cheers kinder - yes i'm good. i was just a bit surprised with myself for these strange uncharacteristic feelings I was getting from using Insta for only a short while. I don't like to compare myself to other people, as I say. But it does concern me that it's something I've noticed in people close to me who are much heavier Insta users, just in the way they speak and act IRL; for example one person I know who uses Insta primarily does this ironic-but-not-really thing of saying "Don't judge me" or even "I feel like people are judging me" and for a while I wondered where they were getting this from, and how serious they were being.

i feel sorry for friends of mine that try to promote their music on instagram. because it's either going to come in the form of a post that can only have 1 minute of audio (or whatever it is), along with a giant square box that is an image. and they have to figure out what to put in that giant square box for a minute to give the person listening to a sample of their music something to look at while they listen. and that's really hard. and if the promoter REALLY succeeds, perhaps the instagram user will click on the bonus "reels" option to see the longer version of the song, which will also need an interesting video or image to go with it. and if all that somehow works, maybe the person will click a series of links (in the bio) to get to the bandcamp link. it's just very, very bad for musicians imo

Yup, OTM. I maintain we need a social network for music. One that really works well and lets artists, DJs and fans share and collaborate with each other, share events and new music aetc; possibly with a primitive DAW or four track built into it or something. Bandcamp is fine as an ecommerce site and Soundcloud is.... well, it serves a purpose, but I would love an audio equivalent of Instagram.

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 15:52 (two years ago) link

i'd be surprised if bandcamp doesn't start building out some kind of social network at some point for just this purpose, something that crosses what they do with what myspace used to offer for musicians.

akm, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

who knows what bandcamp is going to 'do next' but my money is on 'being made much shittier so it can go up in market cap' as by far the most likely option. they don't seem to be screwing it up yet though.

i'm kind of amazed that soundcloud still allows people to post mixes. remember the era when it would take down any dj mix because of copyright? i wonder what backroom shit they had to do in order to work around that. seems like they're trying to go the spotify route with all the channels and so forth. and the subscription model i guess. their mobile app is one of the worst i've ever used, practically worthless.

i basically get off a new technology train with anything complicated that you can only do on your phone. je refuse.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 17:02 (two years ago) link

i think by the time any social network has grown to the point where i'm on it, it already sucks badly

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

i haven't posted a new Soundcloud recording in like two years, but every so often I get an email that one of my songs violated an existing copyright and has been taken down. still! most of them covers.
