'Back To Normal'
(I decided at the end of last year to release it today, nothing to do with the current situation)

Dude! Your songs are hilarious.

Oh I missed this when it was first bumped. Your 'In My Life' cover is as awesome as its predecessor, Neanderthal, please post more!

Doing these little polyrhythmic improvisations/exercises:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-4njPnDI-G/

Which inspired me to write a piece on the computer using similar rhythms but actual notes, and it sounds great in that it ends up sounding like a carbon copy Steve Reich rip, which has no reason for existing. Maybe I'll try again just recording those percussion sounds and doing a produced version, and maybe that will sound a little more fresh, idk. I know it's well-trodden territory but feels like comfort food rn.

Although you know what, it turns out that putting Valhalla Space Modular on everything instantly makes it more interesting, go figure

as someone who routinely works in polyrhythms and reich rip-offs, keep going

Thank you, I have kept going and now I'm very excited about this project.

I have a remix out today too, done pretty quickly under quarantine conditions: https://open.spotify.com/track/2iWGqeJcFXusnE4ji7XAQ2?si=F4M3EFyLRjuzOl0qWW51yQ

Love that rolling drum sample in the second one.

DJI, Friday, 17 April 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

Thanks! I played that part myself.

I think the mastering compression is a little weird on that with the bass stabs, but they wanted a mastered version submitted on very tight timeline, so it is what it is.

I have a couple new things!

First one is an instrumental for guitar with Mel9 box (clarinet setting), guitar with Big Muff, ukelele, and Casio (organ voice).

Second one is a little vignette song about my high school era rock band.

Real guitar or programmed/sampled?

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

sampled. most of the tracks are sample based, except for about 10 that i made with software synths

New recording, streaming on Soundcloud for a limited time before this year's album release - my electric arrangement of Montreal composer Shawn Bell's 1995 classical guitar composition Currents II. I started doing an electric version of this in 05 but hadn't really played it for 10 years before picking it up for a December gig. I've been moving towards just accepting and leaving in some of the imperfections in my playing.

DJI, Friday, 24 April 2020 23:29 (three years ago) link

Did you replace the "4" with an "a" in the URL?

Downloaded the free trial of Izotope Ozone 9 and I'm really liking it, esp the vintage compressor. Remixed/remastered the recording I posted a week ago and think it sounds a lot better; also mastered two other pieces for the planned album.

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:50 (three years ago) link

The band got our first quarantine song/video done, apparently we're going to keep doing them:

https://www.facebook.com/mamadigdown/videos/3043741569039500/

Very happy with how it turned out, although it's not fun at all to record drums in a small room, by myself, with a headphone cord that's way too short.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

And then we did another one in a day, because someone wanted to make a Mother's Day thing, this time with a muppet:

Those are great! Did you guys all record to a backing track or click or something? How did it work?

DJI, Monday, 11 May 2020 19:41 (three years ago) link

I started off recording bass drum to a click (just keeping the form in my head), then snare recorded to me, and then the horns one at a time. So one person was creating mixes as we added parts, and sending it to the next person. Maybe not the most efficient method, but it's working for us.

Of course most civilians think we're recording over Zoom or something, but I just don't see how that would be possible in terms of hearing each other, latency, etc.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 11 May 2020 19:56 (three years ago) link

Also that way we can put little things in for the next person to play off of, to make it feel more live.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 11 May 2020 19:59 (three years ago) link

That’s so cool! I’m impressed your band has been together so long. That’s really something.

I made a new recording by myself w a field recording of humming insects that I recorded last summer when I was super sick. It’s melodica, maraca, recorder, drum set, and bugs. https://m.soundcloud.com/marshmallowy/may-2020

thank you! it's not professional or perfect but i feel like it does what i want it to do. it feels like sounds i made, and that's satisfying :)

that is GREAT

I am a free. I am not man. A number. (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 May 2020 12:07 (three years ago) link

says you arranged it? if so, I really like the arrangement, the chord choices, the part writing. great intonation too throughout.

how is that ACapella program? i've been looking for something like that.

I am a free. I am not man. A number. (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 May 2020 12:08 (three years ago) link

Thanks! I had the option of singing to a recording of the accompaniment from the Burleigh arrangement but my Mac wouldn’t render the two audio tracks together when I tried to put them together in iMovie, so this route ended up being easier. The Acapella app is pricy but worth it, especially since I did this for my church gig and can write it off. My director suggested I start a YouTube channel called I Am My Own Barbershop for maximum Covid-19 SEO, which I think is hilarious

(so serious) (DJP), Sunday, 24 May 2020 12:22 (three years ago) link

that's a cool idea! would watch. post it here if you wind up doing that!

lol sometimes going a capella is the easier route when technology fails.

i'm gonna check this app out as I used to do these types of recordings and keep finding programs that can't sync properly :/.

(so serious) (DJP), Sunday, 24 May 2020 12:26 (three years ago) link

I did these about six years ago, when I still had a dope USB mic. I'm not much of a producer and levels confound me at times, but here they go:

Neanderthal - In the Still of the Nite (a capella)

Neanderthal - End of the Road (a capella)

thanks! i always wanted to do this arrangement with a live quintet. i need to find where I put the sheet music.
