btw

I can't think about ranking the movies of 2019 right now but good luck to Beach Bum.

― Chris L, Wednesday, April 1, 2020 12:38 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

don't think too hard, just throw a list together! put some ones you liked loads above some you just liked, don't worry about finessing each position.

dang, i need to check my apocrypha but pretty sure sic in anti-pedantic mode is definitely one of the markers of end days

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 04:06 (four years ago) link

It's not up to Hell or High Water, but that's a close comparable imo. It was better than I expected.

Miami weisse (WmC), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 13:48 (four years ago) link

yea it stuck w/ me, though actually forgot to put it on my ballot lol :\

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 13:56 (four years ago) link

Maradona doc has the best opening, what, 10 minutes? of any film last year. Delorean Dynamite!

or something, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 14:17 (four years ago) link

I'm just tired of the US parochial bullshit where if it didn't premiere in the US, then it didn't count.
Now that I understand what you're saying I'm not sure how often that actually happens. I know I'm not the only one who can't afford all these streaming services and I live far away from the cities that screen this stuff. So, parochial, yes, but not in the sense you mean.

Cherish, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

Anyway, I'm going to try to squeeze in a couple more films and then I'll vote.

Cherish, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 15:35 (four years ago) link

I liked Bone Tomahawk and admired the placid relentlessness of Brawl In Cell Block 99 and Vaughan's performance, both of them as home viewings, but I absolutely couldn't face three hours of Mel Gibson doing Zahler without being in an audience

anyway I was on the same 20-second hold loop for 40 minutes all up yesterday, so here are devvine's picks:

Our Time (Reygadas)

Rent for $4.99 on Bezos and iTunes, buy for $7.99 from the same overlords.

High Life (Denis)

On Prime in 4K for subscribers, free on Kanopy, rent for $3.99 in HD or 4K, rent for $4.99 in standard, buy for $5.99 in 4K, buy for $11.99 in HD, buy for $12.99 in standard.

Peterloo (Leigh)

Available on Bezos Prime with subscription, and on Region 2 DVD from the UK.

La Flor (Llinas)

Available on DVD in Switzerland, and Blu-Ray in France.

Vitalina Varela (Costa)

Available on DVD in the UK, and can currently be rented for home viewing via the distributor, with 50% of the price going to an independent cinema and its staff (I commend Northwest Film Forum, if anyone does this and doesn't have a local option.

The Irishman (Scorsese)

I Should Have Called It I Heard You Paint Houses is on Netflix worldwide.

To the Ends of the Earth (Kurosawa)

Available on DVD in Japan.

Jessica Forever (Poggi, Vinel)

Streaming free on Shudder with 30-day trial code SHUTIN.

No Data Plan (Revereza)

Was scheduled to screen at the Brattle in Cambridge, Massachusetts last Monday, but was postponed by pandemic.

Diamantino (Abrantes, Schmidt)

On Criterion Channel with subs, also on disc and digital.

Martin Eden (Marcello)

Scheduled for US release starting April 17 in NYC. Good luck imo.

It Has to be Lived Once and Dreamed Twice (Kohlberger)

Formerly available on MUBI. Contact the distributor to book a DCP.

Swatted (Chandoutis)

Viewable for accredited festival programmers with a membership.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 23:53 (four years ago) link

just watched Monos, really liked it, the story was very unpredictable

there are so many good 2019 films

Dan S, Thursday, 2 April 2020 00:50 (four years ago) link

of 2019 movies, two with incredibly beautiful cinematography were filmed by Claire Mathon, Atlantics and in Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Dan S, Thursday, 2 April 2020 00:51 (four years ago) link

planning to watch Border and By the Grace of God before I vote

Dan S, Thursday, 2 April 2020 01:35 (four years ago) link

I was one of two Border voters last year, would be pleased to see it make a better showing this time

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Thursday, 2 April 2020 03:00 (four years ago) link

Diamantino was really nice

Dan S, Thursday, 2 April 2020 03:21 (four years ago) link

I've voted for some movies, innit

silby, Thursday, 2 April 2020 03:22 (four years ago) link

will spoil a bit and mention Paul Thomas Anderson's Thom Yorke music video Anima (streaming on Netflix), not previously brought up here.

silby, Thursday, 2 April 2020 03:23 (four years ago) link

Family was a great overlooked comedy that was just as funny at home recently. Can't recommend it enough. Taylor Schilling from Orange is the New Black (which I haven't seen), is the lead, and she's phenomenal. it's from 2018, by Laura Steinel. I can't remember if I've already made this post itt but idc

why is new deadline

bcz I am crazy busy working & staying alive

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link

11 ballots received so far, vs a total last year of 28. No problem moving the date through the weekend if there's any call for it*, but I reckon the OP covered this, and it's unlikely those of us currently unable to concentrate on subtitled drama in shared living rooms are likely to find it easier to do so as weeks or months go by.

donald failson (sic), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:07 (four years ago) link

well, I'm not working again til Monday.

of course I can't afford all those streams

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:16 (four years ago) link

however I signed up for a 2-wk free trial at Criterion, and Black Mother is running there.

and I will have time to watch my 'permanently' loaned library DVD of Wild Pear Tree.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

Border is such a strange film

Dan S, Friday, 3 April 2020 00:50 (four years ago) link

Dan S, Friday, 3 April 2020 01:13 (four years ago) link

i have a ballot ready to send but wouldn't mind a couple of extra days

have access to The Beach Bum, The Nightingale, Waves, Hustlers but haven’t seen them yet
If necessary, prioritize Waves.

I'd like an extra day or two myself.

Cherish, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:52 (four years ago) link

everything i've seen/heard about waves makes me certain it would be on my worst of the year

devvvine, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:55 (four years ago) link

So mote it be - ballots due on Tuesday.

donald failson (sic), Friday, 3 April 2020 15:44 (four years ago) link

everything i've seen/heard about waves makes me certain it would be on my worst of the year
Huh. I thought the characters were messy and complicated and real. And I didn't have much room to object, honestly -- I was continually pulled in, overwhelmed.

Cherish, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

xp - thanks for the extra time

Miami weisse (WmC), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

Are we expecting confirmation emails Y/N?

or something, Friday, 3 April 2020 20:49 (four years ago) link

re: Waves, neither worst nor at all best -- it won't make it onto my top 20.

Compiling this now.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 3 April 2020 21:13 (four years ago) link

Ballot sent.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 3 April 2020 21:34 (four years ago) link

I'll send confirmation as I tally.
