liking the Italo-ish/hi-NRG/big chunky 80s vibe we seem to have landed on now

is anyone recording these? or writing up the tracklistings?

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 13:35 (four years ago) link

They're still at it?!

Sean in the chatroom now saying he'd totally get a bidet if he had room for one. This is all a bit too close to home lol

(can't help you on the tracklist, sorry APS, though there was a google docs thing that floated in the chats someday, that tries to log everything)

also new sampling material

just found this link for the 1 april mix: https://we.tl/t-Xg6u6yVHRU

ah yeah that one starts interestingly!

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Friday, 3 April 2020 08:48 (four years ago) link

it's titled 01.04.2020 but the tracklist matches 02.04.2020 in the google doc.

o i c all the links are in the spreadsheet. except for this one - the ae jams bit mentioned above:

They're up! 7 new sets. Time for some brain massages

octobeard, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:09 (four years ago) link

not the damn show I went to - no doubt a two stage release like last time. Looks like they have re-pressed the NTS vinyl too?

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:36 (four years ago) link

Can they repress everything Chiastic onward now?

Melbourne is sounding really good to me, on initial flip-cursorily-through-them-all-and-pick-your-Ae-steak inspection

Cysteine Chapo (Craig D.), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 22:40 (four years ago) link

(Wouldn't you know, Ae steak is very marbled)

Just listened to Helsinki. As I recall from when I saw them in London it's a very different mood from the 14/15 sets. Low energy, slow to develop, hard to love, except for a couple of short sections around 35 & 45 mins. Will try Melbourne now.

Paperbag raita (ledge), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 10:10 (four years ago) link

> hard to love

you underestimate us

koogs, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 10:22 (four years ago) link

lol i know we have the best minds here working hard on developing a fanatical appreciation for everything these guys do.

one month passes...

jamming on twitch right now: https://m.twitch.tv/4utechre

lovely downtempo ambient beat jam that has the synths at the end of maphive6.1 with some funky slow percussion and processed sounds reminiscent of a bit of the NTS sessions. really good

octobeard, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:35 (four years ago) link

damn

lukas, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 05:34 (four years ago) link

lol wait they're still going four hours later

lukas, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 05:34 (four years ago) link

something is going, at least

lukas, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 05:43 (four years ago) link

should not be as compelling as it is, witchcraft

lukas, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 06:00 (four years ago) link

it's generative - been going for more than a week now. Someone at watmm pasted this bit of explanatory chat from Sean:

Broadcaster4utechre: all the synths are just playing whatevers in the frame at that point

Broadcaster4utechre: it scans the frame line by line top to bottom

Broadcaster4utechre: r g b are 3 diff channels so i use all 3 but i put red stuff lower, green around the mid and blue for the cooler feeling higher stuff, idk i did it by taste

Broadcaster4utechre: and then combine the 3 and the output is the oscilattor out

Broadcaster4utechre: the frame is actually 3 diff matrices overlaid if you like, r g and b

Broadcaster4utechre: so i can use all 3 so i used a crossover to split them across the spectrum

Broadcaster4utechre: 2 crossovers

Broadcaster4utechre: so i put red stuff lower freq, green stuff is sort of melodic midrange, and blue is anything above that

Broadcaster4utechre: i did it to how the sort of warm/cool axis works around sounds in my head idk

Broadcaster4utechre: yeah

_: So, can you dial in colours, or are they chosen randomly
Broadcaster4utechre: its an algorithm

Broadcaster4utechre: colour is p interesting it turns out

Broadcaster4utechre: i like colour best of all the things i got into doing this

Broadcaster4utechre: the visuals are being controlled by certain events but its minimal interaction

Broadcaster4utechre: mostly its about the image changing the sound

_: I guess I’m curious how the visuals are informing the audio if the algorithm is taking the music into account. Is it a feedback loop?
Broadcaster4utechre: its luminance across all 3 clour planes

_: So i dont think s ean programmed key changes
Broadcaster4utechre: yeah the key i just set

Broadcaster4utechre: i can make it keep changing but u might feel sick after a bit

...

Broadcaster4utechre: all the oscillators in all the synths (incl drums) are reading the same wavetable are their respective frequencies

Broadcaster4utechre: it reads what's on the screen the same way a tv shows an image

Broadcaster4utechre: line by line, across and down

Broadcaster4utechre: each full frame is one cycle

Broadcaster4utechre: but as the oscillators are going at different rates sometimes the data in the wavetable changes before a cycle is complete

Broadcaster4utechre: it interpolates pretty well though

_: So the linear vector of RGB values is the wavetable? What triggers the envelopes?
Broadcaster4utechre: am just using stock objects to do this

Broadcaster4utechre: all the sequencing etc is just existing stuff, as were the synths before i swapped in these oscillators

Broadcaster4utechre: i mean the music is new but the patches used to sequence are existing

_: ahhh yeh so there's still a sequence of on off in each synth yeh?
Broadcaster4utechre: yeah the synths and drums etc are all doing what they would do anyway, just the wavetable in all the oscillators is changing

this stream is absolutely brilliant, thank you.

porlockian solicitor (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 07:21 (four years ago) link

incredible. i barely understand the explanation but this

r g b are 3 diff channels so i use all 3 but i put red stuff lower, green around the mid and blue for the cooler feeling higher stuff, idk i did it by taste

seems like the opposite of what i would have done (i.e. blue/cool/low freq, red/hot/high freq).

Looking at the visuals now I think the relationship might be a bit different - that discussion was from a couple of days ago I think

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 09:22 (four years ago) link

thanks for the link - I tried to install two different Twitch apps on the smart telly just for this to no avail, but have had it burbling in the background on laptop speakers for three hours now

Elon's musk (sic), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 09:48 (four years ago) link

saying the music reflects the picture prompts the question about who wrote the graphical bits.

koogs, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 11:53 (four years ago) link

“controlled by certain events but it’s minimal interaction” isn’t much of an explanation - I reckon it’s work in progress for a live show and there are probably sliders controlling parameters or similar

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 11:59 (four years ago) link

Some seriously draconian moderation going on in that twitch chat. I made one cheeky reference to Coldplay when a yellow shape popped up in the video and was sent to time out for 10 minutes lol

J. Sam, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 12:20 (four years ago) link

yeah someone said they banned the word "the" yesterday. i can't even figure out how to join the chat - do you have to be logged in? i can't figure out how to do that! just as well tbh.

a slice of greater pastry (ledge), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 12:22 (four years ago) link

Yeah you just have to register/login to your twitch account

this was the correct thing to do except it should've been a life ban

I don't have a switch account and no desire to chat, but this stream has been lighting up the day in my office so far!

Graphics really remind me of those plug-ins w/ visualizers that you could get for winamp et al circa... '99? '00? Except with those they (claimed to) move to the beat, whereas here that's well, not that easy :)

It appears the visuals are taking into account the contents of the chat, so people are posting crazy emojis and ascii art which then is incorporated into the generated visuals which then alters the timbre and flow of the music. This is some seriously badass Ae generative fan interaction music.

― Hey, let me drunkenly animate yr boats in about 25 to 60 days! (Le Bateau Ivre)

You are probably thinking of Milkdrop, originally a plugin for Winamp, which was spectacularly effective at creating sound reactive visuals that indeed were functional (used FFTs to translate freq ranges into parameters to adjust various plugins' visual states)

It was so efficient at what it did for its time and so effective with its conveyance of synesthesia, that I'd say only in the last 5 years or so have concert visuals really surpassed it consistently as a satisfying aesthetic accompaniment.

octobeard, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

That was it, Milkdrop! :)

Milkdrop was so great. I wish Spotify had some sort of Milkdrop mod on it
