Evan the Hurley tapes I actually have on CDR (Hurley's homemade versions) but thank you! I try to be completist with him so I'd love OG tapes some day

honestly though the current World Situation is making me re-evaluate a lot of things including wantlists. I don't really "need" any of it.

likewise, Sleeve. looking through yours now, good stuff.

The demand rating feature has already told me that I have on offer some EXTREMELY undesirable records

if i understand the feature correctly, it means you have some records that are so desirable that everyone has them already! :)

Indeed, I read it wrong. Nevertheless I am ready to make DEALS on Leon Russell records.

Haven't finished up adding the last of the CDs. I converted to digital/lossless early on.

All of my vinyl. Never got around to adding CDs.

what's everyone's most rare, most treasured or most expensive item in their collection?

I have a copy of this, bought at a record fair for £2 in Bristol in 2000:
https://www.discogs.com/Suicide-Suicide/release/429836

Likewise picked this up for not much in the late 90s, there has been a real run on Fall records lately apparently:

I treasure my box sets from the Vinyl On Demand label

for single LPs, 1st Jandek and 1st Sun City Girls are up there, also the 3rd Nurse With Wound LP

I used to have an original copy of Intersystems' "Free Psychedelic Poster Inside" but sold it, and kind of regret it

i posted this one before on some other thread but this is the most valuable thing that i've got. cost me 50p

Most valuable rock record i have would be this one...

https://www.discogs.com/Keith-Cross-Peter-Ross-Bored-Civilians/release/3223440

...but tragically my copy skips a bit on the first track :(

After that i guess it would be the Faith / Void album w/ the inserts

Most valuable 12" i have is NM copy of this, which again cost me 50p:

Somebody asked me this question recently and I immediately thought it must be something indie from the 90s. Like my original presses of the few albums I have by The Divine Comedy, Tindersticks, Denim, Supergrass, Stereolab etc. When I got home I realised the correct answer was probably this Miley Cyrus RSD exclusive from a few a years ago.

I have my collection on Rate Your Music but I've never got round to listing it on Discogs. I guess now would be the time do it.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:56 (four years ago) link

my most valuable records by median price (assuming I've actually added my most valuable records - about half of it I haven't got round to adding to my discogs):

The Carpettes - Small Wonder? 7" - £84.82 - did actually pay about £40 for this, it's the rarest single on Small Wonder records iirc which I was collecting at the time as I lived round the corner from where the Small Wonder record shop was
Various - London Popfest 2009 CD-R - £81.00 - ??? WTF ??? I would try and sell this but my copy skips. why would someone pay £81 for this? it's all previously released stuff!
Blonde On Blonde - Rebirth LP - £77.88 - one of my grandpa's records
Twilight Zoners - Hospital 7" - £77.40 - paid 25p for this iirc
Thee Oh Sees - Help LP - £68.85 - splatter vinyl, got it at a gig
The Seize - Everybody Dies 7" - £63.33 - paid a fraction of this but it's not a great copy tbh
The Bleach Boys - Stocking Clad Nazi Death Squad Bitches 12" - £60.86 - bargain for this one apparently
Puncture - Mucky Pup 7" - £57.12 - cost me a tenner. another Small Wonder single, best known for being covered by the Exploited, probably
Tall Dwarfs - 3 EP's 3x10" - £57.10 - think I paid £5 for this off Ebay years ago
Black Easter - Ready To Rot 7" - £56.94 - this one is on Killed By Death #5 which is probably why it's so much

Not to BRAG (incoming brag) but I got in on Duster before it became a cult hit. Nabbed Stratosphere back when it was a $10-15 LP via mailorder (can't remember if I got it somewhere dull like Amazon or something about 10+ years ago). But yeah kept putting off checking out the new one. Saw them live a handful of times in recent years ramping up to this release too.

Luna is associated with Tobin Sprout right? I asked him where I could get Let's Welcome The Circus People and he said ask the Luna shop. They got back to me many months ago and said they were putting one on sale for $85. Since that's $40 more than I was hoping to spend I declined and sure enough it's still sitting there in the discogs marketplace today.

I used to manage a store in NJ but rarely would my co-workers be on my wavelength, sounds like I'd have fit in better over there with you guys!
― Evan, Monday, March 30, 2020 10:16 AM

Nice! I was pretty unawares till the reissue – that Mark Richardson piece about rediscovery tipped me off, I think: https://www.theringer.com/music/2019/2/22/18233366/duster-reissue-discogs-rare-music-vinyl

LUNA's longtime owner is from Dayton, and did a lot of GBV and related releases for a long time. So yeah...that's us :) Shop is temporarily closed, but we're still selling online!

It's funny how people's tastes coalesce working in a store...maybe it's personalities/age/interest? A few of us are long-time friends/bandmates as well, and the manager has worked there 20 yrs (the store turned 25 in December). If you're ever in Indy, pull through! :)

dronestreet, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:34 (four years ago) link

So weird to imagine ebay existing at the same time that anyone would have valued original Tall Dwarfs records to be that cheap, at least not without major defects. Even if demand for NZ rock was low something like that would surely be at least £15. Or the vinyl boom of the past 12ish years has just calibrated me to such an extent I can't even remember anything different.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:36 (four years ago) link

I would/will totally visit if I'm out there! I only have a very few friends with (varying) taste overlap "IRL". Jealous.

I bought Weeville, Fork Songs and Dogma at the same time as the 3 EP's, same seller on Ebay. Paid £8.62 for all 3 of them total. tbf this was 15 years ago

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:43 (four years ago) link

I don't have my stuff in Discogs, but a quick lookup of what I figure are my most valuable items by median:

The Chameleons - Tony Fletcher Walked On Water CDEP, $63.86
Jazz Butcher - In Bath Of Bacon CD, $70.00
Jazz Butcher - Big Questions CD, $92.50
Bill Nelson - Trial By Intimacy CD box (from 2012), $86.42
Scott Walker - In 5 Easy Pieces box (from 2006), $92.86
Colourbox - Colourbox CD box (from 2012), $137.90

One of my most valued and valuable records is the Air France 2x10". In 2010 I knew that was going to be a tough one to get in the future so made sure I did then.

Maybe way less "cool" but I remember killing myself trying to get that Calexico boxset. Mostly because it contained all of their more experimental leaning tour exclusive albums, and their sonic desert atmosphere evoking experiments are what appeal to me. Don't know how motivated I am to track stuff down like that these days but the biggest thrill might just be stumbling on anything underpriced. Everyone is hip to the online markets and the going rate on anything these days.

Hey Cow_Art with another huge collection! Great stuff. When it gets that massive I wonder what you come back to the most.

Frank Ocean vinyl is probably some of the most valuable stuff I have.

Evan, I’ve listened to everything at least a couple of times. There’s definitely things I return to and things that I’ll probably never play again.

Marty Robbins Hawaiian albums get a surprising amount of replay.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 17:51 (four years ago) link

My most valuable items are the ones I paid the most for in the first place, although some of them have appreciated considerably in value, notably the VOD box sets.

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 17:59 (four years ago) link

I also have a lot of signed LPs which I imagine increases their value quite significantly, including a NWW LP which Steven Stapleton drew on specially for me.

While we’re at it: what do y’all have complete collections of?

I more or less have complete vinyl collections of everything put out by:

Modern Lovers/Jonathan Richman (probably took the most time and $$$)
The Breeders
Smog/Callahan
Silver Jews

complete:
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282

almost complete:
Unrest
Virgin Prunes
Michael Hurley

I used to have some more extensive/impressive collections of stuff like Coil, C93, NWW, Legendary Pink Dots, Muslimgauze, etc but gave on "completism" regarding those artists long ago and have sold lots of it at this point

Think I managed to keep up with tful282 until about '95. Well everything except the leonard cassette anyway. Don't think I have a complete run of any band that has more than like 3 releases tbh

"Test Pressing of Michael Hurley & Pals* - Armchair Boogie with hand-painted cover." - had not seen that one yet, thanks. Pretty cool looking, from 2019.

My favorite pressing of that is actually the LITA CD version, I think it sounds incredible. Have that and an OG, used to have the Mississippi LP reissue as well but sold it.

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link

That is a badass cover.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link

it really is

dang I didn't realize there was an 8-track version from 1971!

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

Poked around a little and didn't see any info about the hand-painted one anywhere else.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:31 (four years ago) link

I have a feeling the year and the fact that it is its own release as apposed to categorized as a version of the main one are results of a sloppy listing.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 20:41 (four years ago) link

nah if it's really a test pressing for the 2019 reissue then that's a separate entry from the LP reissue itself

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 21:49 (four years ago) link

Yeah but normally it just goes in the list among the versions of the album, in this case next to the retail release version of MR-018.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 22:08 (four years ago) link

OK so yes the year would be correct in that case.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 22:08 (four years ago) link

I thought my most valuable record was:

http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/10960799?ev=rb
Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs reissue of Dark Side of the Moon

but it could be my sealed Let it Be from 1970 with Korvette's $2.99 price tag going by the asking prices.

Evan, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 11:48 (four years ago) link

It's kind of hard to tell. First, it's sealed, so I don't know which version it is exactly. Second, sealed/mint copies listed up to $350, but not seeing that copies have sold that high. My guess is I might be able to get $100-$150?
