launch and levitate and a modicum of common sense will see u thru

first boss is the hardest required boss, a few of the side bosses are pretty tough. very annoyed that the DLC is ps4-exclusive (or at least not on xbox) for the time being!!

adam, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:04 (four years ago) link

agree first boss is the hardest then it gets easier tho i did quit in frustration last night after dying twice to some banshee/phantom boss in black mesa that appears behind you clobbers you for 90% of your health and then turns invisible only to do it again. both times i got her to a sliver of health and then died myself. frustrating!

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

I read that you can sit pat and use shield to block most of the banshee's damage, I never tried it though. (What I did actually track it down while it's mostly invisible -- you can see some ripples in the air to roughly locate it. Also, evade when it becomes visible again.)

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Monday, 30 March 2020 17:08 (four years ago) link

i'm not sure i have shield. where do i get it? i do have evade.

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:10 (four years ago) link

I'd completely forgotten that it's an acquired ability! You get it on this side quest: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-08-28-control-a-good-defence-shield-6043

If that's not available to you yet, IIRC you can still spam evade to avoid getting hit by her. I also remember struggling against that boss.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Monday, 30 March 2020 17:17 (four years ago) link

haven't played Control for a while but the one thing that became obvious was that doing the side quests is key because unless you're insanely good, you need all those abilities

mh, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:23 (four years ago) link

ah, you know i did get that mission but i couldn't figure out how to get into field training bc the door had that red block on it and i didn't realize i could puzzle solve to open it. thought it would just open later on its own and i'd backtrack.

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:26 (four years ago) link

Yeah, any sidequest that mention an Object of Power, do it right away.
Hah, yeah, I had the same feeling on that particular thing; it's not always clear what a story-progression gate and what's an environmental puzzle to solve.

Nhex, Monday, 30 March 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link

a friend of mine has coaxed me into playing COD together online as a way to socialize and my god i am so horrible at shooters with a controller, Karl otm it really does almost make me angry (esp since on the computer i'm pretty ace)

gbx, Monday, 30 March 2020 19:38 (four years ago) link

guys, I've been playing Doom Eternal on pc and... I'm not good at shooters on pc anymore, either

old :(

mh, Monday, 30 March 2020 19:40 (four years ago) link

Play it on easy mode imo

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 30 March 2020 19:51 (four years ago) link

Forgot to mention that Control's music is pretty ace too! Excellent use of Tricky, among other highlights.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Monday, 30 March 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link

control probably deserves more points than i gave it in the poll i'll share more thoughts there when it places but i also assumed it would probably do well anyway even without me and there's always too much stuff that i want to vote for

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 21:15 (four years ago) link

dark brutalist aesthetic that's fairly minimal other than the ZILLIONS OF PARTICLES FLYING is pretty fucking awesome imo

mh, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link

Uncharteds, no! no nathan drake! fuck you nathan drake!

I've just spent days and days playing through the Nathan Drake collection and I 100% support this sentiment.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Monday, 30 March 2020 22:21 (four years ago) link

i never understood its popularity

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

god of war either tbph

Mordy, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

Charming rogue + Indiana Jones, but gah, I found the games all painful to play.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Monday, 30 March 2020 22:32 (four years ago) link

Maybe! But God Of War looks pretty cool, and so do these Uncharted games, so that's something. I'll see.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:44 (four years ago) link

most games >>> God of War >>> Uncharted
imo

Karl Malone, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:46 (four years ago) link

OK, not "most games" but i'd put almost all the games from your recent list above both of those

Karl Malone, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:46 (four years ago) link

lol there is no way I'm getting to any of the Uncharteds any time in the next 6 months.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 30 March 2020 23:42 (four years ago) link

started Control yesterday. Not sure what to make of it yet.

I'm really starting to believe that Witcher 3 spoilt me as my introduction to modern gaming. I mean, it really has everything going for it, and by comparison many other games I've attempted to start feel rather 'on rails', a little 'sure walk about a bit but sooner or later I must funnel you through this particular corridor so that this particular plot trigger will happen, oh now press this button, now that button.. etc. Can feel a bit like I'm just playing a movie or being a mouse in a maze. that's the impression I got of The Last Of Us and to an extent Control so far, but maybe they open up a bit later on. I love the exploration aspect of Witcher and the way there's more than one potential plotline. A lot of other games just feel kinda closed-in.
Death Stranding less so as it's very open world but it's starting to feel a little monotonous - the endless rocky landscapes, the way all the waystations and cities are built roughly identical. I'm not expecting to see a Toussaint any time soon, and the side quests seem to involve going back and forth from the same few places. but then I'm still on the early chapters so I'm sure there'll be a lot more variety to come

i don't mind the uncharteds. they are like the old-school game that comes packaged with your console that is designed to show off its best graphics and sounds but is also pretty easy to avoid scaring off people new to gaming.

na (NA), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:05 (four years ago) link

I'm sure Control is great, but I watched a few minutes and was kinda put off by the running animation and the general 'to-do' list vibe (explicit "Find the Storeroom" instructions), etc. Still ruined by From games, I guess.

for all the talk about how cool the building is ("it's like its own character!") a lot of it is unmemorable maintenance and facility layouts. why so many men + women's bathrooms with nothing in them? i've been in more coolant rooms in video games than i've been in real life and part of my job used to be tracking/inventorying infrastructural equipment in big buildings.

Mordy, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:43 (four years ago) link

I'm also not a fan of the game physics. The jumping looks jerky and when I run into, say, a trolley with a load of bottles and stuff on it, it just falls over like it's made of cardboard.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:54 (four years ago) link

Apparently next month's ps plus giveaway includes Uncharted 4 which for me was the

"game that comes packaged with your console that is designed to show off its best graphics"

iirc my review was "really pretty climbing"

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:55 (four years ago) link

the uncharted game without Nathan Drake was really fun

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link

If Uncharted 4 is free, it's definitely worth digging into. There are some really cool set pieces in the middle of the game.

The Last of Us 2 is delayed indefinitely

ciderpress, Thursday, 2 April 2020 19:19 (four years ago) link

To the contrary, pretty sure it's been released and we're living it. The graphics are incredible.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 2 April 2020 19:30 (four years ago) link

i hope the skill tree opens up soon. i enjoy the weird "pace", though - feels like real life

Karl Malone, Thursday, 2 April 2020 19:40 (four years ago) link

lol guys

Nhex, Thursday, 2 April 2020 23:50 (four years ago) link

another cool thing - i really like this minimal interface. i've seen this attempted in other games, but for this i feel like i'm actually MOVING my hands, like i am controlling my hands directly. not just the general hand movement, but the fingers, the knuckles, everything. it's really intuitive. and it's not just a graphics trick - it actually affects the whole way you approach the game, the things that you can do. earlier today i pushing a glass of milk down the hallway. then i realized - i can wrap my fingers around it and squeeze, and just carry it down the hall instead. i saved like 2 minutes that way, and was left with much more of the milk than i usually get by pushing it. the pace is still the weirdest thing about the game. i'm prepared to say that i like it, and i would not have said that when i first started. but it does have a kind of rhythm to it. the day/night cycle lines up with real life, like animal crossing

you can do other cool things with the glass of milk like throw it at your roommate. actually the physics are really good if you can pickup your roommate you can throw them too and the environment reacts accordingly to what you'd expect throwing 180lbs into a wall or a couch or whatever afaict it doesn't mechanically do anything or unlock any achievements

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:08 (four years ago) link

The DualSense iterates on its predecessors by introducing a new haptic feedback system, adaptive triggers for the L2 and R2 buttons, a built-in microphone array, and a new ‘Create’ button in place of the ‘Share’ button from the DualShock 4. Details on what exactly this ‘Create’ feature actually entails is still to come.

“In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design,” Nishino wrote. “DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!”

a little more xbox-ish, but not too much

looks pretty

dont like how that looks nearly as much as the ds4

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:11 (four years ago) link

i presume you can turn off the microphone. what a nightmare to have voice chat on EVERY GAME

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:12 (four years ago) link

every time any of the console makers change their controller i have to worry that they've made something that's not comfortable for my giant hands. the current gen ones are all ideal

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:14 (four years ago) link

"This will be the first controller that is already it's own Overwatch variant"

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:23 (four years ago) link

the new controller looks like it’s wearing a little black spaghetti-strap dress

force ghost bg (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

The current controllers are great, except they keep breaking down for me. My original one has phantom R2 inputs and generally unresponsive, and on the newer one the down button only works about 1/10th of the time. This makes for a fun challenge in Dark Souls 3, where I never know if I'll be able to change consumable items or not.

Admittedly, this is probably related to the fact that I now mostly play while I'm on the stationary bike, with sweaty hands. :/

Maybe that's not a speaker, maybe that's a fan that blows in your face to make you feel like you are outside.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:34 (four years ago) link

The DS4 already has a speaker!
