Portrait of a Lady on Fire goes up at midnight tonight on Hulu

Chris L, Thursday, 26 March 2020 16:24 (four years ago) link

Great news (for people who have someone's login)

Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. In some ways it feels like a re-envisioning of Kaili Blues with additional dimensions and alternate views

Dan S, Friday, 27 March 2020 00:37 (four years ago) link

I like the decrepit rainy Kaili setting, the decaying rooms and hallways and outdoor spaces, and the changing palette of colors

Dan S, Friday, 27 March 2020 00:39 (four years ago) link

We saw that the other night. Was a horribly-written dull mess for 70 minutes but the final hour redeemed it somewhat. Director is still young and clearly has ideas, and it was beautiful to look at throughout.

On DVD and Blu-Ray woth director's commentary, digital rentals from $3.99, was scheduled for Autumn release in the UK but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. It feels similar to Kaili Blues with but additional dimensions. It is surprisingly romantic.

Odds that I'm going to have any time to meaningful plug away at any 2019 blind spots over the next week and a half are pretty nil, so I'll submit a ballot sometime this weekend.

coronoshebettadontvirus (Eric H.), Friday, 27 March 2020 12:54 (four years ago) link

I tried catching up on Transit the other night but things like wondering if the governor was maybe going to order a state lockdown proved distracting.

Chris L, Friday, 27 March 2020 12:57 (four years ago) link

I'm not sure I'll vote. I can barely get 10 I like and I haven't watching many movies lately.

watched

(sorry about the double post above)

tonight I'm going to watch Little Joe or Synonyms

Dan S, Friday, 27 March 2020 16:18 (four years ago) link

Looking forward to hearing what you think about either!

haha nice I didn't know it was out on disc! Such a great movie. Amazing woman

flappy bird, Friday, 27 March 2020 17:33 (four years ago) link

For people who are having trouble getting to an enthusiastic ten:

Break your ballot into the would-be-numbered section

Then after a para break, fill it out with a B-features section of things you liked but don't consider top-ten material, and I'll give these ten points each

And if you really want to throw some bones around, go ahead and include a C-tier for one-pointers.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Friday, 27 March 2020 17:53 (four years ago) link

I'll try to watch at least one more 2019 movie that I think I will like before ballots are due, otherwise I'm giving points to Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Varda by Agnès

Not formally available for home viewing yet. But the distributor might make arrangements during the pandemic?

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Saturday, 28 March 2020 17:21 (four years ago) link

For UK ppl: CH4 screened the Maradona doc earlier this week. On the catch up for the next month.

This gets harder every year. When the hell was 2019? Was midsommar 2019, it feels like it came out ten years ago

devvvine, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link

Grass is so wonderful. Very much 2018 (world premiere February at Berlin), but I might also vote for it now if other people have seen it this year.

Frederik B, Monday, 30 March 2020 22:49 (four years ago) link

I really liked Little Joe. It was my kind of horror film. Like with Lourdes it feels like the director walks a line and leaves it up to the viewer to decide what is really going on

Dan S, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 01:34 (four years ago) link

very stylized sets, costume design, production, sound

understated but intriguing performance by Emily Beecham

Dan S, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 01:52 (four years ago) link

also loved Synonyms. Tom Mercier is astonishingly good in his first film role

Dan S, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 02:04 (four years ago) link

Grass is a 2019 US release. Haven't seen it. Hotel by the River also '19 (and his best in awhile).

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 02:15 (four years ago) link

I'll vote for what others vote for, and a lot of ilxors are from the US, but can we drop the idea that the US release date matters? It's a South Korean director, and his films always premiere in Europe.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 08:10 (four years ago) link

It doesn’t matter for the poll, people are just chit-chatting about dates for the heck of it

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 08:15 (four years ago) link

I am including a Straub-Huillet film and would encourage people who engaged with that season on MUBI to list one instead of moaning.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 08:20 (four years ago) link

If it didn't matter everyone would consider Sorry We Missed You which just got digitally released in the US, and which is absolutely and obviously a 2019 world/uk release. But it does, and the US ilxors will consider it for 2020.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 08:37 (four years ago) link

Films can be voted for in multiple years, as evidenced by the fact that films keep placing in multiple years. This is a) fine and b) fun.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 09:04 (four years ago) link

I don't think it's that 'fun' that non-US film systematically places lower on these lists due to the parochialism of US ilxors.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 09:15 (four years ago) link

It'll happen no matter what, but can we try and work against it if possible?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 09:16 (four years ago) link

posted grass because it was first screened in the uk in 2019

devvvine, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 09:19 (four years ago) link

I can't think about ranking the movies of 2019 right now but good luck to Beach Bum.

Chris L, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 13:38 (four years ago) link

i voted & otm to that

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:22 (four years ago) link

Fred, I get what you're saying, but no matter where you draw the lines there will be people who don't have access to films you want to vote for. Non-US films don't always march in date-solidarity either! Every ILX poll process puts great films on my radar. Surely that's the point, and not what outranks what.

Cherish, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:36 (four years ago) link

That's not what I'm talking about! To be clear, I don't begrudge anyone voting for anything they have seen. I'm just tired of the US parochial bullshit where if it didn't premiere in the US, then it didn't count. We do this a few months into the next year, so there's plenty of time for 2019 films to get a 2020 US release, and if a voter is too narrow-minded to then check them out and vote for them, then fuck them.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:03 (four years ago) link

Works both ways though. Plenty of 2018 films didn’t get a UK release until well into 2019, no doubt some of these will get votes.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:05 (four years ago) link

It should only work like that

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:06 (four years ago) link

Seeing a 2018 film in 2019 and voting for it = good
Seeing a 2019 film in 2020 and voting for it = good
Seeing a 2019 film in 2020 yet not voting for it because you only care about us release = fuck you

Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:09 (four years ago) link

comalph and Fred are encouraged to share film opinions and campaign for votes itt, discouraged from sharing poster opinions and campaigning for bans itt
