Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. In some ways it feels like a re-envisioning of Kaili Blues with additional dimensions and alternate views

I like the decrepit rainy Kaili setting, the decaying rooms and hallways and outdoor spaces, and the changing palette of colors

We saw that the other night. Was a horribly-written dull mess for 70 minutes but the final hour redeemed it somewhat. Director is still young and clearly has ideas, and it was beautiful to look at throughout.

Odds that I'm going to have any time to meaningful plug away at any 2019 blind spots over the next week and a half are pretty nil, so I'll submit a ballot sometime this weekend.

I tried catching up on Transit the other night but things like wondering if the governor was maybe going to order a state lockdown proved distracting.

I'm not sure I'll vote. I can barely get 10 I like and I haven't watching many movies lately.

Grass is so wonderful. Very much 2018 (world premiere February at Berlin), but I might also vote for it now if other people have seen it this year.

I really liked Little Joe. It was my kind of horror film. Like with Lourdes it feels like the director walks a line and leaves it up to the viewer to decide what is really going on

Grass is a 2019 US release. Haven't seen it. Hotel by the River also '19 (and his best in awhile).

I'll vote for what others vote for, and a lot of ilxors are from the US, but can we drop the idea that the US release date matters? It's a South Korean director, and his films always premiere in Europe.

I am including a Straub-Huillet film and would encourage people who engaged with that season on MUBI to list one instead of moaning.

If it didn't matter everyone would consider Sorry We Missed You which just got digitally released in the US, and which is absolutely and obviously a 2019 world/uk release. But it does, and the US ilxors will consider it for 2020.

Films can be voted for in multiple years, as evidenced by the fact that films keep placing in multiple years. This is a) fine and b) fun.

I don't think it's that 'fun' that non-US film systematically places lower on these lists due to the parochialism of US ilxors.

It'll happen no matter what, but can we try and work against it if possible?

Fred, I get what you're saying, but no matter where you draw the lines there will be people who don't have access to films you want to vote for. Non-US films don't always march in date-solidarity either! Every ILX poll process puts great films on my radar. Surely that's the point, and not what outranks what.

That's not what I'm talking about! To be clear, I don't begrudge anyone voting for anything they have seen. I'm just tired of the US parochial bullshit where if it didn't premiere in the US, then it didn't count. We do this a few months into the next year, so there's plenty of time for 2019 films to get a 2020 US release, and if a voter is too narrow-minded to then check them out and vote for them, then fuck them.

Works both ways though. Plenty of 2018 films didn’t get a UK release until well into 2019, no doubt some of these will get votes.

It should only work like that

Seeing a 2018 film in 2019 and voting for it = good
Seeing a 2019 film in 2020 and voting for it = good
Seeing a 2019 film in 2020 yet not voting for it because you only care about us release = fuck you
