Sky Sunlight Saxon is a musical genius whose greatness has been ignored for far too long on this board and elsewhere (RIP June 2009)

On another board, someone posted a link to the Seeds appearance in PSYCH OUT:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbDJOMuxYfs

I'd seen the movie, but I'd forgotten what the sequence they appear in was about. The quality is awful, but I found it sharply poignant to see this tonight.

Met him after a show a few years ago. The guy was an absolute star. Would say RIP but for once I want there to be some sort of mystical space-cake shit for him to go hang out in.

I remember Sky Saxon circa 1985 claiming that the reason Michael Jackson was so popular was because his name rhymed with "Saxon"!

Listening to "The Seeds" album now, having only heard "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" and "Pushing Too Hard" before. It's all great. RIP.

Blasting "Raw & Alive", an old favorite. Love the way the audience screams become part of the music. (I was always told they were dubbed on anyway!) "The Gypsy Plays His Drums" is incredible.

From a recent Billy Corgan newsletter sent out to fans:

"So I'll get to my point. This website is going to change. It is going to transform into something that is consistent with the concepts of love, grace, and community. We are not looking backwards anymore, only forward. I for one am willing to stand for something good here, in this little corner of the blogosphere, and say it's time.

What makes the things I'm saying here even more real to me is the passing of my dear friend Sky Sunlight Saxon. Sky lived everyday with the concept of LOVE as his guide, and he walked the talk. He was a spiritual warrior who would tell me that Yahowa knew the beauty of our hearts, and that musicians were the living prophets of the world. So in Sky's memory I am going to re-dedicate this website to represent the things he cared about most; love, life, music, his spiritual family, and the protection of all God's creatures, big and small."

God Bless 'em - 'The Bottomless Pit' (band made up former Silkworm - they know loss, huh?, Seam, .22 members) covered 'A Faded Picture' at Schubas last night in Chicago. I hadn't heard that Saxon had died - very sad - pulling out 'Web of Sound' today....

Does Corgan just drop names that sound cool, or.....

The Seeds were all I listened to for about two and a half years. I don't know what got into me.
Future is my favorite. Painted Doll is just nutso.

I know nothing of Saxon's other work, however, is it nothing but a bunch of collecto-crap?

three weeks pass...

I love you too Billy. Now shut up and stop sucking.

I gotta admit, he heeded my words. Took a lot of photos at the tribute show last night but search for all the inevitable YouTubes that must be up now for the various performances -- Billy's contributions included a great three-song set fronting the ad hoc Spirits of the Sky near the start (and yes, they did the song they're named after), a good solo guitar turn with the Electric Prunes, playing bass with Sky Aquarian in a YaHoWa33 set and doing "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" during the concluding Seeds set.

And it was a great, great set -- what the configuration of Seeds players were during the end (and it kept rotating a bit), they were kicking some *major* ass, I kept thinking that Mudhoney would kill to be seeing it and figured that the one person missing from the various guests who would have loved to have been there was Lux Interior, just because I could see him going crazy with some of the songs as well as acting appropriately lewdly with the go-go dancers.

ten months pass...

Yeah. What Roger said.

Heck, I even like Future by the Seeds. A lot. The Seeds jamming with the addition of tubas & things like that is so transcendentally WRONG that it becomes Too RIGHT.

Sky's LPs from after the Seeds are uneven, but all are interesting & worth a listen. Firewall is particularly good. The one with Purple Electricity (basically Redd Kross) is also cool. I guess the only thing he's done that I didn't care for was A Spoonful of Seedy Blues.
