That's what I've been using too, but kept getting frustrated earlier by a bad gateway error.

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:54 (four years ago) link

the ytmnd or yify variations were good for a while but similarly frustrating after a short time each

i have one i used last week of that ilk that seemed ok, will post later when home

ole uncle tiktok (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:57 (four years ago) link

wait, i thought ytmnd was for sean connery memes, not torrents

i'll occassionally pop in through a tpb proxy, there are a billion of them about

btn for general TV
red for music
ptp for general films
kg for arthouse films

all are elite private trackers, next to impossible to get invites for

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link

i'm over it, ok? i'm fucking over it. the bbs scene when i was 13 was fucking scene rats trading games that weren't any good and that nobody had time to play anyhow, and all these private prestige trackers, same shit different day. fuck digital capital, give me digital potlaches. what's the point of digging up some incredibly rare digital transfer if it's only available to an "elite" cadre of seedboxers whose primary concern in life is their ratio? the ones who hoard what they have are worse than the ones who steal everything that aren't nailed down and give nothing in return. upload it to youtube, or fuck, even just fucking sell it, ok?

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:19 (four years ago) link

i ain't promising i'll buy it mind you but if i don't, that's my own damn problem.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:20 (four years ago) link

Like I said, I've had no trouble finding high-quality rips in the open web/torrents of literally anything I've ever wanted to see.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:31 (four years ago) link

well, if you don't want to see yahoo serious' first film, a documentary about the effects of the coal mining industry on australia, that's your problem

if on the other hand you have found a high-quality rip of "coal town" out in the open i would love a link

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Just doing some deep googling, and ... is there a chance that it has never even been released on home video in any format? I can barely even find mention of its existence, period.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:28 (four years ago) link

(btw, I totally saw Young Einstein in the theaters.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:30 (four years ago) link

Coaltown doesn't seem to be available on any of the private trackers so yes, it's probably never been released.

In general though, if you're interested in anything vaguely obscure or underground you're not going to find it on public torrent sites. Those interested in Shinsuke Ogawa, for example, aren't going to get hold of his films anywhere except on KG or PTP.

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:34 (four years ago) link

I miss the W sites and was not cool enough/missed my chance to be on their successors, but tbh 95% of my listening these days is NTS radio and I should spend more on bandcamp (and then there's also spotify and 20 years of accumulated mp3s and 30 years of accumulated CDs), so what do I actually want to download GBs more music I'll never listen to for

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:53 (four years ago) link

ogawa's a good example, there's so much cultural bias (anglophone in particular) implicit in what hits public torrent sites and what doesn't. i see the unavailability of certain works as a cultural barrier to be overcome, and the people on the private trackers behave more like it's a form of currency to be accumulated.

well, i'm not here to fix the world's problems, i don't even have time to watch narrative media these days, but i'll always find time to bitch and moan about things on the internet!

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link

But it's only the people who are seeding Ogawa's films on private trackers who are overcoming that cultural barrier by making them available to other members. It's nothing to with "currency to be accumulated". I've built a healthy ratio on private trackers but I don't have a seedbox and never have.
