Now I want to write a song called 'Face or Bird'

Frederik B, Monday, 23 March 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

I've never heard a good version of "It's Only Love," not even Bryan Ferry's.

IIRC Lennon said he thought it was trash. I love it. His voice is so great on it.

hard not to vote for the revolver tracks. in a housefire i'd reach for "i'm only sleeping", but "and your bird can sing" blows me away every time - it's just a perfect composition

Karl Malone, Monday, 23 March 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

the revolver tracks and i've just seen a face tower over the rest.

likely going with 'i'm only sleeping.'

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Monday, 23 March 2020 17:00 (four years ago) link

I'm only sleeping.
I neither understand the overwhelming enthusiasm for And your bird can sing nor the derision for dr. Robert in the other thread, but I've just seen a face as the perennial runner-up sounds about right.

overwhelming enthusiasm for "and your bird can sing" = follow that guitar

Sometimes I think it's Harrison's best solo.

yeah, it could me, and he has so many perfect guitar parts

going with "and your bird" again

"i'll be back" might be my runner-up, AHDN is so perfect

Lennon was a great artist, but his aesthetic judgment was fallible.

Though it is also possible in his public statements he said bonkers things just to make people scratch their heads - would be very much in character

I always regarded Bird and Dr Robert as among the lesser Lennon songs on Revolver, which is to say I like them, and both have elements that I love more than the song as a whole.
In and your bird can sing, it's obviously the dual guitar lead, but I never listened to it *that* way. I'm always down to anthropomorphize a guitar line. Could be what i'm missing.

I hear a lot of the Byrds in both songs, and I'm only sleeping as maybe more quintessentially Lennon.

Deflatormouse, Monday, 23 March 2020 18:59 (four years ago) link

Lennon also said "Cry Baby Cry" was "rubbish."

definitely. i actually didn't realize Bird was a lennon song, even though obv he sings on it. it doesn't sound like a typical lennon song at all.

Karl Malone, Monday, 23 March 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link

Actually, "I've Just Seen a Face" wasn't scrap-heaped to a comp album -- it led off the U.S. version of Rubber Soul!

This sequence is bananas.

(and "It's Only Love", fwiw.)

Paul & George's dual harmonic lead guitar on Bird is pretty nice, esp. the little tricky part in the bridge...

i've always had a soft spot for the intro/outro on the revelatory version that appeared on Anthology:

Yeah, I didn't realize it myself initially, if anything I sort of subconsiously assumed George wrote it.

There could easily be a seperate thread/poll for classic Lennon songs that he unfairly disavowed if there isn't one already.

Deflatormouse, Monday, 23 March 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

Wow @ the anthology version. I guess the title is no accident. And your byrd can sing.

Beatles goofing around in a studio a welcome sound.

Re: the guitar parts, iirc it was one of the illustrations of their desire to make some Bach-type harmonies.

I thought it was George Martin’s job to come up with the Bach melodies

Karl Malone, Monday, 23 March 2020 20:02 (four years ago) link

I'd rank them like this:

I'm Only Sleeping, (Revolver)
If I Needed Someone, (Rubber Soul)
And Your Bird Can Sing, (Revolver)
What You're Doing, (Beatles for Sale)
I've Just Seen a Face, (Help!)
Every Little Thing, (Beatles for Sale)
I'll Be Back, (A Hard Day's Night)
Drive My Car, (Rubber Soul)
I Don't Want to Spoil the Party, (Beatles for Sale)
Dr. Robert, (Revolver)
What Goes On, (Rubber Soul)
It's Only Love, (Help!)
Tell Me What You See, (Help!)
You Like Me Too Much, (Help!)

I believe John was OK with the music, it was the lyrics he disdained.

"Cry Baby Cry" could be a case of John knocking a lyric out quickly because he could.

btw ,I do like Gary US Bonds' version.

Lennon later spoke of his embarrassment at the triteness of the lyrics. He told Hit Parader magazine: “That’s the one song I really hate of mine. Terrible lyric.” In another interview he named It’s Only Love and Rubber Soul’s Run For Your Life as his least favourite Beatles songs.

It’s Only Love is mine. I always thought it was a lousy song. The lyrics were abysmal. I always hated that song.

eheh, and again :
Lennon was later dismissive of And Your Bird Can Sing, describing it as “a horror” and “throwaway”.

"And Your Bird Can Sing," but disagree that Revolver tracks tower over others here and would probably go "Every Little Thing" and "I'll Be Back" after it.

I don't think the lyrics to "It's Only Love" are worse than lots of other early Beatles tracks, but that was maybe at a point where Lennon was pushing himself to go farther.
