Hello!

I'm compiling stuff for 1934 now - not just music but movie scenes, newsreels, radio, etc.

If you have any suggestions, please click this link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SrCI54fjCioSVuyRLLckVlnuNDGalZaB/view?usp=sharing

Then 'Open With Google Sheets' and select the '1934' tab.

It doesn't work on mobile for some reason.

three weeks pass...

Collecting recordings from 1935 now, if anyone has any to share, I'll be working on the '1935' tab on here over the weekend - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SrCI54fjCioSVuyRLLckVlnuNDGalZaB/view?usp=sharing (you need to click 'open with google sheets' - if it doesn't work then a comment here is fine too)

Also I'm recording next batch of radio shows (all here - https://centuriesofsound.com/tag/cambridge-105-shows/ - if you want a flavour of what it is) over zoom and need guests, if you know people who are willing to chat about music in years from 1917-1921 then please let me know.

Also also the 1924 mix is out on Monday, think it's a good one.

1924

https://centuriesofsound.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/1924-icon.jpg

Here's my mix for 1924, this time it's a little different as I've sandwiched everything between the two halves of the original recording of Rhapsody in Blue, and written a bit of a sprawling blogpost to explain why. There really is a lot of exciting music here, a lot I will come back to later.

Please share with anyone you think might be interested - it's a struggle to keep this going these days, pretty confident I will anyway, but nice not to post it into the void.

Blog post, free stream & download, some other bits and pieces here - https://centuriesofsound.com/2020/05/04/1924/

Just a note that while it's still free to stream, I got a little spooked by some things about lawyers coming after podcasters for using music, so the download is now just a 10-minute taster. The full dl is still there on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/centuriesofsound - sorry if this seems money-grubbing, but really have got to find a way to make money from the thing which sucks up all my time, now my income is otherwise compromised.

Shamelessly bumping for North America, now they are awake. Sorry, it is just once a month.

Also cannot believe I left some of my notes in the track listing, again.

three weeks pass...

Just finishing listening to 1936, and would like to report that I remain un-blown-away by Robert Johnson. Teddy Wilson, on the other hand! Why isn't he a bigger name in jazz?

Anyway, collecting material for 1937 now, please help out by suggesting anything not already on the 1937 tab here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SrCI54fjCioSVuyRLLckVlnuNDGalZaB/view?usp=sharing - looking particularly for bits of speech, novel sounds, brilliant movie dialogue, etc.

Also I've just started putting out my radio show on the podcast feed, if anyone feels like listening to me talk about things instead of keep my mouth shut as I usually do.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 27 June 2020 19:31 (three years ago) link

iirc the latter half of alan lomax's recordings in haiti take place in early 1937. some great music on there obviously, but also recitations by zora neale hurston among others, weirdo sounds, etc.

i have the 10xCD set on a hard drive if you're interested.

budo jeru, Saturday, 27 June 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

or rather than dumping hours of sound on you i can listen through and share a few recordings of interest, how's that ?

budo jeru, Saturday, 27 June 2020 20:12 (three years ago) link

Sounds good! I am a bit pressed for time so 10 CDs sounds like too much, if you can send / share mp3s to centuriesofsoundmail at gmail, would be very much appreciated.

Just posted 1926

https://centuriesofsound.com/2020/07/06/1926/

This one felt like a huge project all on its own. 1926 is the year electrical recording really took off, and this means there's a big uptick in the quality and variety of stuff available, so I wanted to do it justice. Writing a bit about every track in the blog post was possibly pushing it a bit. Here's what we have, it's a bit shorter than last time because I'm really trying to make tighter mixes.

was pat conte's "secret museum of mankind" series a helpful source for finding recordings outside of western europe and USA ? what other resources did you use to track down the so-called "ethnic" stuff ?

budo jeru, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 16:28 (three years ago) link

btw just remembered the lomax in haiti stuff — will ILX mail you.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 16:28 (three years ago) link

I did get some stuff from Secret Museum of Mankind, but also generally from a variety of compilations of old music from around the world, they are all a treasure trove but it's such a hassle trying to work out years of recordings, I end up guessing a third and unable to use another third. Ultimately there is only so much time in the day.

The most productive source of this stuff has been the Excavated Shellac archive, they have good quality rips and always do their best to work out the year - https://freemusicarchive.org/curator/Excavated_Shellac

Should also say Jonathan Bogart's Just One Song More has been brilliant, especially for (unsurprisingly) Latin music of various sorts. https://justonesongmore.com

Somebody also shared a big archive of old Japanese music, sorted by year. And failing all of these, there is this one guy on slsk with an amazing collection.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 21:51 (three years ago) link

Nice, I have some interesting-looking tracks (mainly Middle Eastern) queued up already!

For the record, the proper spelling of the title of the Ibrahim Özgür track is “Son nefes” (‘last breath’). Lovely little song, in surprisingly modern sounding Turkish, vocabulary and enunciation-wise.

And Maurice Chevalier! Now there’s a blast from a much more recent past, or so I thought. Turns out he’d been recording from 1919 and had been famous ever since. Maybe he feels like a part of my lifetime to me (without really knowing his music) because (and this is a guess) his passing in 1972 was a big news event here in the Netherlands that made an impact on 10-year old me?

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 23:20 (three years ago) link

Corrected the Ibrahim Özgür title, yes, lovely track, such an odd mixture of Turkish music with tango and it has the intro from Carmen.
I have doubts about the dating of the old world tangos here, but am trying my best not to worry about them now.

Thanks both of you, this one feels like a big chunk of my life, and I really want to get it out there, without making a pain of myself of course.

After the news that my company is probably folding, I have to find myself a new real job now, so there is a danger of this needing to be put on hold. Really hope it doesn't come to that, but if it actually starts to pick up some of the momentum it's been losing since 2018, *perhaps* it can lead me into some archivist work instead of my current career, which I am burned out on already. Perhaps a pipe dream, especially right now.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 21:27 (three years ago) link

I have a funny relationship with old jazz people and 78 collectors in that I have no decent physical setup to speak of and am suspiciously enthusiastic about modern music. I actually chose that version of 'In a Mist' for its crackliness, the cleaner versions have some loss of high and low notes

had a lot of fun listening to this one. the gene austin / j.s. bach ending was a nice touch. loved the barbeque bob, memphis jug band, the ben simmons track (which i recognize from the "living is hard" compilation on honest jons), and the demetriades "misirlou"

new to me favorites:

Washington Phillips – Lift Him Up That’s AllSteva Nikolič – Arnautka
Iriarte-Pesoa – Instrumental – Pericón Por María
Henry Thomas – The Fox And The Hounds
Rev. A.W. Nix – Black Diamond Express to Hell

The Rev AW Nix is hairs on the back of the neck intense.

There was a Washington Phillips compilation releasd a couple of years ago, which is essential listening.

yeah i'm beginning to think i've been seriously missing out on a lot of amazing early gospel music. i say to myself, i say, there's more to life than blind willie johnson !

budo jeru, Friday, 7 August 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

i'm following up on some of the gospel stuff that jumped out at me.

all of the REV. T.E. WEEMS recordings are available on a document records CD (part of the "Preachers & Congregations Vol 7 1925 – 1928" comp), as is the late 1928-1930 REV. A.W. NIX material (the 23 April 1927 To 26 October 1928 recordings are only available as a download).

There was a Washington Phillips compilation released a couple of years ago, which is essential listening.

the 2005 yazoo CD comp "the key to the kingdom" seems like the best bet: complete recordings + pat conte's liner notes from the '91 comp + 4 bonus tracks from blind mamie & a.c. forehand. secondhand copies seem to be easy enough to come by online.

^ and all of the above is available on spotify fwiw

budo jeru, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 19:19 (three years ago) link

My main source for this stuff is "Goodbye, Babylon", a massive box set of early gospel recordings on Dust to Digital

https://dust-digital.com/shop/goodbye-babylon
https://dusttodigital.bandcamp.com/album/goodbye-babylon-2

Some other tracks are from "American Primitive Vol. I: Raw Pre-War Gospel (1926-36)" - an earlier single CD compilation on Revenant

https://www.discogs.com/Various-American-Primitive-Vol-I-Raw-Pre-War-Gospel-1926-36/release/1213316

Don't know if any of this stuff is on Spotify as I don't use it.

https://centuriesofsound.com/2020/09/07/1928/

This one was a bit of a beast to make, over 200 minutes long and featuring somewhere over 100 tracks, but listening back it doesn't feel at all tiring or repetitive, there's just such a wealth of great music being made at this time. Also managed to find some radio test disks, which hold the whole thing together as if its a radio show.

Was going to post the tracklist, but it is probably too long, it's under the link anyway. Hope people enjoy!

this is pretty cool, Ben Webster does a pretty cool solo on it that hints at his later style. He used the same saxophone from 1938 till his death in the early 70's. He should be held as big a ledge as Coltrane imo!

very cool!

I thought so! However reaction has been suspiciously subdued - it is not really a relaxing listen, at all. Or it could just be that people have a lot going on right now I guess. I have just today reluctantly accepted redundancy from my job, trying to combine this project with a couple of other more obviously lucrative things (online courses, private tuition) to get by, it is going to be a bit of a struggle though, to say the least. I made an advert for myself, if anyone wants to easily share the thing.

Sorry, /blog etc., getting on with getting 1931 now, also nursing a sick hamster.

frankly the editing was amazing. it's my opinion that all the mixes should be done like that. found it to be super engaging.

sorry to hear about your job. you now have +1 patreon members, hope that helps :)

listening through 1930 for a second time. i was pretty immersed in a task during the first listen. it's nice to take the time to consult the track list and jot down my favorite tracks for the purposes of further research!

Well there is a lot crammed into that one! Currently working flat-out to get 1931 finished, it is much more leisurely in its pace, though it has a very strong great depression / classic horror theme which has emerged somehow.

Also should mention maybe that I'm on the radio tonight playing some records from 1922 - https://centuriesofsound.com/2020/12/05/centuries-of-sound-on-cambridge-105-radio-episode-30-1922/

Hello anyone who reads my thread!

As a new year's wish, could anyone point me to anywhere I can get hold of this record in any form? (good quality digitized would be best!)

Thanks, I've bought it! Now to try to get my record player set up to rip audio, can't be too hard, surely?

one month passes...

Hi.

https://centuriesofsound.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/1932-large.jpg

Here is 1932 - - - - - > https://centuriesofsound.com/2021/02/02/1932/ < - - - - -

Didn't post on this thread last month as I was doing a yearly "contemporary" detour to 2019 but don't reckon I'll continue with those, so chronological it is from now on.

This one is (of course) for the year 1932, and as the US record business was in the doldrums at this point, it's a kind of world tour, including a whole 25+ minutes of music from the UK, which is a first (and probably won't be matched until the 60s) and some amazing stuff from the Arab world and India.

So a three-hour audio collage, free to stream, one-hour preview mix available to download.

These take me forever and I'm trying to justify spending my time on them now my company has closed and I've taken redundancy (yeah I know, would be better to dedicate the time to jobhunting) so if you know anyone who may be interested, please do share.

Here is the tracklist, it has already been pointed out to me that James & Martha Carson are not even remotely from 1932, not sure how I missed that, but it will be re-edited at some point to fix that.

one month passes...

Here is 1934, much less in the way of hits and hot jazz and much more in the way of abrasive records from places far away from the USA, I think it's not bad but would not be surprised if casual listeners are less keen.

four weeks pass...

Hello followers of this thread - I'm supposed to put 1935 out today but it's only 70% done, not going to rush it and make it bad.

In the meantime, I'm asking for suggestions from the late 50s, just any music or sounds recorded between 1945 and 1949, not just obvious pop / jazz / be bop / jump blues but soundtracks, experimental recordings, movie clips, interviews, speeches, poetry, and anything else that works as an audio clip.

You can add suggestions on this google sheet - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SrCI54fjCioSVuyRLLckVlnuNDGalZaB/view?usp=sharing - or email me at james at centuriesofsound dot com, or just leave a comment here.

Here we go then, 1935, my 50th mix and I think maybe the longest so far. Not a sprawling mess, but certainly sprawling at over 200 minutes.
Made this one a nightmare for myself by listening to many hours of original radio, of which I ended up using less than a minute.
Feels good to finally get this out, albeit a week late.

So I guess I am not going to get any prizes for use of the spoiler tag

two weeks pass...

I made a compilation, as it's been a while.

John Philip Sousa’s world was a regimented one, as befitted a military band man, but when he left trombonist Arthur Pryor alone to record some “tinned music” he inadvertently created one of the most extravagant moments in turn-of-the-century music. Soon brass soloists of all varieties were competing to fill two minutes of wax with the most excessive collection of flourishes and sfx they could muster. By the late 1900s they had all apparently calmed down – but for a decade at least the peacocks were producing some of the most exciting music ever recorded.

one month passes...

It's been a bit too long, but I finished a new mix! This one features Benny Goodman's famous 1936 Carnegie Hall concert, Orson Welles' radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, an audio collage of the Munich crisis, and quite a lot more, totaling 220 minutes of sound. Come and have a listen, it's free to stream, preview mix available to download, and I'll be putting out another couple of bits over the next month as bonus podcasts.

Moving across to here - Centuries Of Sound - mixes / audio collages for every year of recorded sound, 1860 to the present day.

I really should have just made this a single thread from the start, not sure why I didn't TBH.
