My wife saw MBV there during the Loveless tour. That place does not have friendly acoustics for that kind of music.

akm, Saturday, 21 March 2020 17:17 (four years ago) link

Yeah tbh the sound in there was not great. All those bricks.

RIP -- my only Slim's show was Boredoms w/Hovercraft, late 90s.

― Miami weisse (WmC), Friday, March 20, 2020 6:40 PM (yesterday)

Yeah that was a great set (VCN tour, last tour with Yamamotor). I caught the Boredoms playing Slims 4x: 94 w/ TFUL282 & then 02 (2 shows!).

I saw Afghan Whigs & Teenage Fanclub in 92 circa Congregation/Bandwagonesque. You'd think the place would've been packed but it was half-empty at the peak attendance.

Was interesting doing my (til now) usual Saturday morning shopping run at the Ferry Building and farmers' market there. Almost everything in the building itself is closed -- exceptions are Golden Gate Butcher, Acme Bread, El Porteno, Stonehouse Olive Oil, Frog Hollow, maybe one other thing and I'm pretty positive that was about it. Plus the fellow who sells biscuits at his stall near Peet's, but he says next week will be it for him anyway, he's switching to a separate stand-alone location -- terrible timing on the one hand, on the other, probably safer and more stable anyway! I'd say only about half the farmer's market stalls were there -- got what I needed but even though the BART ride there and back was safe enough (plenty of space, barely anyone on the cars), kinda glad the Mission market is scheduled to start next Thursday for the year. Between that, Bi-rite and my local spots, so long as the supply chains run I'll still have produce at least. But overall everything was just that little more quieter and strange this morning.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 March 2020 22:40 (four years ago) link

yeah Shakey I haven't known these friends to be liars, on the other hand you'd think there'd be more chatter about this if it was happening.

went for a bike ride today and part of me wished they were handing out citations - way too many people ignoring spacing. pedestrians, cyclists, everywhere. was really looking forward to getting up to Marin but given how people were behaving, didn't seem safe :(

of course there's no way to go grocery shopping and preserve spacing, which i do multiple times a week. and that's in an enclosed space. i dunno.

lukas, Saturday, 21 March 2020 22:42 (four years ago) link

My local farmer's market is at the DMV, they have the whole parking lot, last week they crammed it into the same space it always uses.

Anyone know the best place for donations of masks and gloves? I think I might have a stash of n95s at work (I’m supposed to use them when I handle the dyes but I never do)

just1n3, Sunday, 22 March 2020 14:39 (four years ago) link

I got an email saying UCSF students are at 18th & Dolores 10-3 today collecting PPE for healthcare workers. Sorry I don't have better info- it was a screenshot of an instagram post...

Thanks! I’ll look in to that

xp or closer to where you live -- Kaiser in Oakland is looking, I think. They are also taking donations at Omni in N. Oakland

sarahell, Sunday, 22 March 2020 15:10 (four years ago) link

though a drive to San Francisco sounds kinda awesome and surreal because of non-existent traffic

sarahell, Sunday, 22 March 2020 15:11 (four years ago) link

(that is, places to donate masks and gloves)

lukas, Monday, 23 March 2020 04:05 (four years ago) link

There were way too many people out this weekend. Every parking lot & staging area in the east bay hills was packed.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 23 March 2020 15:17 (four years ago) link

I guess I'm guilty of that - I figured going for a hike out in the hinterlands on mt. tam wouldn't involve other people (and tbf we didn't congregate in any crowds or anything) but yeah there were a lot of people who had the same idea, we passed lots of people on the trails.

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2020 15:32 (four years ago) link

I think going out is fine if you keep your distance. It's the people that don't that pissss me off.

And in some cases I think you have to admit that it's just not possible. That's the reason I didn't ride across the GGB this weekend, just no way to keep six feet on that bridgeway, especially the way people are behaving.

lukas, Monday, 23 March 2020 17:05 (four years ago) link

I went to TJ at Stonestown yesterday, and they were only allowing a certain number of people in at a time.

Archaeopteryx Morgan M.D. (Leee), Monday, 23 March 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

that's every grocery store, I think. And if not, it should be.

We went to Rainbow on Saturday and stood in line for like 20 minutes to get in, but once in it wasn't too bad. Got to talk to a couple of the workers we regularly chat with, which was good.

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

I didn't see that in the local coop that I also go to. :\

SF school district? they haven't announced berkeley yet that I saw but they have informally warned it's not coming back this year.

here come the layoffs

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

jesus. my gf's business has been closed since the first day but funny enough she still has to pay rent. this is a death sentence.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:38 (four years ago) link

layoffs at your place SM?

we just cut contractors, most of them offshore who already work for big consulting companies so hopefully they'll get reassigned. but I work for a company that has cash and can afford to retain people. funnily enough I was very close to quitting this job and going anywhere else a month ago. All my second round interviews at places are now in limbo.

akm, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 23:23 (four years ago) link

Yeah, probably closer to furloughs than layoffs, but it's going to be incredibly disruptive.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 23:32 (four years ago) link

spouse is already laid off as of last week

SF city attorney moves to shut down 'illegal party' scheduled for Friday

...

The party was being planned by Set San Francisco, which Herrara called a "rogue event promoter." The group was selling up to 200 non-refundable tickets, though the venue's website said the space is closed because of the city's shelter-in-place order.

The event promoter later told KTVU he himself has coronavirus, and had difficulty officially canceling the event due to online "technical glitches" and the fact that he's been sleeping 16 hours a day.

well, that's definitely what NOT to do in San Francisco

sarahell, Thursday, 26 March 2020 03:26 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Well there's some light in the world -- a day after City Lights announced their fundraiser to keep themselves going, they've already reached their goal and the donations are still coming in. Very reassuring.

Anyone know of any lawyers doing pro bono stuff for tenants in the east bay? One of my wife’s friends has a landlady who wants to put up the rent because of the ‘additional wear and tear on the appliances’ due to people being at home all the time. She wants to move as soon as she can, for this and other reasons, but shitbag landlords should not be allowed to get away with being shitbags.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 13 April 2020 02:30 (four years ago) link

check out Justa Causa or Centro legal de la Raza (I know ppl at both orgs)

sarahell, Monday, 13 April 2020 14:27 (four years ago) link

both are Oakland non-profits specializing in tenants rights work.

East Bay Community Law Center is another great org (based in Berkeley)

one month passes...

SF just lowered the testing requirements to only having one or more of the following symptoms, or to nothing for essential workers:

Anyone living in San Francisco can get tested if they either:

Have one symptom
Have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the past 14 days

Symptoms of COVID-19:

You have a fever over 100.4° Fahrenheit or 38.0° Celsius
You’re shivering a lot
You have a cough
It’s hard to breathe
You feel tired or sore
You can’t smell or taste anything
Your throat hurts
Your head hurts
You have a runny or stuffy nose
You have diarrhea, feel sick to your stomach, or throw up

For essential workers

Any essential or frontline worker can get tested.

A frontline or essential worker is anyone who leaves their home for work and:

Interacts in person with members of the public
Cannot maintain social distancing at their jobs
Works directly with vulnerable populations (such as those who are experiencing homelessness, have serious medical conditions, or who are over age 60)

Frontline and essential workers include those who work in healthcare, public safety, food service, grocery, construction, delivery, janitorial, transit, social work, or street cleaning, among other jobs.

Workers may work for a private organization/company, a small business, a nonprofit, a public entity, or the City and County of San Francisco. Active volunteers who meet the criteria are also eligible.

Far-right news outfit America's Voice was filming in Dolores Park today, obviously going right up to people while not wearing masks and just basically acting like jerks. My friend started talking about Black Lives Matter to them and hooooo that got them angry.

lukas, Thursday, 28 May 2020 23:29 (three years ago) link

https://sf.gov/information/masks-and-face-coverings-coronavirus-outbreak

:/ I think this is unnecessary

DJI, Friday, 29 May 2020 02:06 (three years ago) link

I agree that the 30 feet on the street rule may be unnecessary

but I'm all for people respecting others' health concerns in public so I'm going to comply, I'll just have to get a somewhat less constrictive mask so I can walk up these hills without choking

Dan S, Friday, 29 May 2020 02:22 (three years ago) link

yeah that is draconian. wtf. i hope berkeley doesn't follow suit.

akm, Friday, 29 May 2020 02:27 (three years ago) link

Yeah, that is morality cosplay, especially knowing that in 16 days restaurants will be supposedly be open.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 29 May 2020 02:48 (three years ago) link

Walking outside and you see someone within 30 feet (about the length of a MUNI bus)

this is horseshit

call all destroyer, Friday, 29 May 2020 02:54 (three years ago) link

I've been walking through SF a lot and I encounter people walking the other way continuously. At first I was really concerned about people approaching me without masks and without social distancing, but I've been relaxing about it a lot more lately

Dan S, Friday, 29 May 2020 03:11 (three years ago) link

Went outside and could actually hear it - the Golden Gate Bridge. It seems the remodeling they did to the rails to increase wind resistance has an odd emergent property: it is a very loud wind instrument. The sound is kinda eerie and it's driving people mad. Worse yet, this weather can last for weeks during the summer

Anthony J.:
“Engineers designed new sides for the sidewalk to help with wind resistance but didn’t take into account the EXTREME sound it creates when wind passes through it. The bridge sings crazy songs now it’s so trippy. It hurts the ears and unbearable it’s that loud.” pic.twitter.com/GWdVia1GNS

— Mark Krueger (@markkrueg) June 6, 2020

TIL: The Golden Gate Bridge has just become the world’s largest wind instrument.

No, but seriously:

There is now a permanent creepy 3-tone dissonant soundtrack flooding San Francisco thanks to some recently completed bridge construction. pic.twitter.com/05ImVT7Im7

also tangentially I like that the new west side handrails of the Golden Gate Bridge now act an Aeolian harp
