omg this woman has a twin who lives in a neighborhood adjacent to mine (a richer one)

Sorry to put this out there but I contine to see small groups of Piedmont kids walking by the house during day or gathering at night. I'm not sure if parents don't know this or don't care or what but please read the article below (hopefully link worked). Just saw a group of four, maybe 8th grade, girls walking with their arms around each other :-o

the woman i posted about above is still going on with her pass-agg posts about social distancing. now has posted anecdotes followed by "I don't understand. I thought this was an upscale, intelligent community!" on at least three different threads. also has canceled her subscription to the local paper because someone got an op-ed published about racism in her neighborhood. i love her.

people complaining about fireworks going off everywhere around 1 am. someone suggests it's not a good thing to call the cops about. best response, explaining things you could consider before calling 911:

When I was a kid, people were setting off fireworks on my lawn, it was dry. I thought the lawn would catch on fire and they didn't belong on my family's law. I banged on the window to get them to stop. My hand went through the pane. I severed my thumb and most of my forefinger, had to bring them in a cup to the ER to be reattached. 40 years later, I still don't have feeling in them. I was a professional violinist, too. So, it's important that people use their own judgment.

Not a Facebook group, but I recently discovered a website that my county uses to address problems, called See Click Fix. I learned about it when I had to report a lost cat. Mostly it's public complaints about potholes and zoning issues and unkempt yards. But this morning I came across this gem, submitted around 1 a.m.

SomehSome of the hd channels of Verizon FiOS like fox news, fox business, OAN news have a lot of noise and intermittent sound while the CNN, and CNBC, have perfect HD video and sound. I called Verizon several times to no avail. Also I pay extra for a Greek news channel at 1789 which is completely on the blink for the past 3 months. Since the problem is on only a few HD channels like 616, 617, 618, 603, 611, and a few others, the problem is not in my coaxial cables which have been checked, but in the Verizon hub that generates and transmits the HD signal. This is going on for 3 months now and I am at a loss what to do since Verizon has been unresponsive. Can you please help?

https://i.imgur.com/8BshCxZ.jpg

I don't watch a lot of TV, especially not news, but I have FiOS and this problem is definitely not limited to Fox and OAN.

peace, man, Friday, 19 June 2020 10:46 (three years ago) link

It is neighborhood group-related because you follow reports from your neighborhood.

peace, man, Friday, 19 June 2020 10:53 (three years ago) link

i left my neighborhood Facebook related group because its members started getting hysterical about people leaving the house. like, "no one should leave the house ever if they can help it exercise and mental health and pets don't matter," while simultaneously deleting posts about the need for humans to spend time out-of-doors and admins arguing vociferously with anyone who raised concerns about such an outlook... it ended for me when i was called a "spoiled bitch" and "comrade" in the same post by someone whom *i know* when i gently suggested that people not use bellicose metaphors to speak about illness.

yes, apparently there is only 10% plus one half

contorted filbert (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2020 01:17 (three years ago) link

I know some military vets with heavy PTSD and this time of year is just awful for them, and I feel for pets, too. I also hate holidays, and find fireworks jarring.

That said, they are a concession to public joy that I don't argue about, particularly online, because it's like telling people the truth about cats.

I have to say I don’t really understand the reflexive defense of the asshole overgrown children setting off fireworks when people are trying to sleep except as some third-order anti-police shit, which, I guess, but also the fireworks are annoying

k3vin k., Monday, 22 June 2020 03:51 (three years ago) link

Reports of fireworks at all hours of the night (from friends) are making me glad I moved out of the city. At some point I just don’t care what they’re about. I like to sleep and for my family to be able to sleep.

they are very annoying, the commenting on nextdoor has now become Q-anon level though. people are now saying they are psyops, posting screenshots from craiglists of fake fireworks ads for "pro-BLM," and sarcastically suggesting we should give the firework setters "EBT cards."

contorted filbert (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2020 12:21 (three years ago) link

also "they are using fireworks to cover up the gunshots," and a guy posting a daily mail article about fireworks that does not mention gangs and saying "gangs are shooting fireworks at each other"

contorted filbert (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2020 12:24 (three years ago) link

yeah, fuck that bullshit— it's stuff like that which makes me keep my mouth shut and let the young folks have some fun til 11pm most nights in June into July.

my main question is where is all the money for the fireworks coming from, because so many people are laid off, and some displays near me would run in the tens of thousands dollar amount many nights.

I enjoyed watching my mostly white liberal neighborhood group tie itself up in knots over Junteenth celebration fireworks this weekend. We support the spirit of those who would light the fuse in celebration if that is their intent, but we heartily condemn the sound of the resulting explosion in the sky. And while our instinct in these matters is to call the cops to have it stopped, we are concerned that if the fuses are indeed being lit by African Americans out of celebration of their freedom, the police might show up and shoot at them to stop it and we can't have that on our conscience, but many of our dogs don't understand that context and are quite upset about the noise.

omg yes!!! except here people are suggesting that the fireworks are being set off by the cops to traumatize POC, or a variant, a plot to set Latino ppl against Black ppl ... and, on the on the other side, I think Gerald the Rose Garden turkey is being re-homed

There's some guy in our neighborhood that has been lighting off really, really loud firecrackers every day for the past week or so, from about 6:00 until well after midnight. I'm fairly certain it's the same guy who always does it, but this year he's really ramped up his frequency and extended the hours. It's utterly obnoxious.

Look, I get the primal appeal of watching colorful fireworks shoot into the sky, but I don't get the "dur dur me like things go BOOM" idiots that spend, quite literally, hours each and every night making loud bangs.

I mean, I'm not going to call the cops or do anything about it beyond bitch about it here, but I don't enjoy watching our cat sprint to hide and cower under a couch every 20 minutes or so. Best I can hope for is the idiot blasting off a digit or something.

These days, every time a firework goes off late at night I have to check Twitter to make sure the cops aren't down the street bombing people again.

I joined a Facebook group for my adopted hometown of St. Marys. 5,800 members; the population here is 6,000, so...well, there are probably a lot of former residents who are in there too. I have to censor myself on Facebook all the time as is (not for profanity or wacko opinions, just for gentle kidding around that doesn't always go over well on Facebook), and I'll have to work doubly hard with this group. A lot of senior citizens here. There was a post earlier today asking "Where is the closest place to St. Marys to get a covert test?" I did not reply "Probably CIA headquarters."

I'd try to correct the slur, but calling them "Arkansas Travelers" probably isn't going to take me far.
