'didnt you know' = better than 'one thing', better than everything. ever. but buddenless version please

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:21 (nineteen years ago) link

omg richcraft is 24 years old?! that's just ... not right

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago) link

That would mean he was 21 when "Why Don't We Fall In Love" came out.

I'm 22 and I haven't done anything a hundredth as productive.

"but buddenless version please "

What's wrong with the Budden verse exactly prima? I prefer him muchly on "Whatever You Want" true.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago) link

exactly? who dares ask me what i exactly mean! ha no wait i'll have a look for it

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha I have always thought of you as a bit like the Wizard of Oz but that was the first good excuse for doing so that you've given me!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard a "1 Thing" remix featuring Fabolous. Are the drums sampled from anywhere anyone knows, BTW?

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

also apparently the drums are sampled from "Oh, Calcutta" by the Meters, which surprised me

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago) link

There appear to be many, many remixes of this song already. On Usenet alone I spy the following:

Juelz Santana
Royce da 5'9"
Fabolous
Peedi Crakk
Vic Damone

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope the popularity of the "1 Thing" beat w/ rappers means that RH will have Timbaland-type career arc where he starts out working with R&B singers but eventually does mostly hip hop records.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i would find that saddening! 1. the world needs hot rnb more 2. rich's formalism already sorta comes from a mid-90s rap era (as well as other places yes); while i don't discount the idea he could do tremendous rap tunes in the future at the moment i would worry they would all sound like amerie / nas 'man up' (another new song off the lp) but without amerie's context enlivening nas' standardness

er by which i mean nas sounds refreshingly exciting on that tune as is

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

but that said richcraft writing with a rapper in mind would obv (hopefully) be completely diff to judging rap guest verses. which leads me to -

'didnt u know'! which i found eventually, but shd never have bothered; generally i do have a distaste for rap guest verses BUT i dont want to sound like these ninnies who automatically hate all men, (y'know like those gender-agenda divs who didnt want jay-z on 'crazy in love' or say 'gully' is better than 'singalong') so i shd qualify it's mostly because they are often stuck on as an needless afterthought vague stab at extra popularity, which is resentibly patronising, and also that often the verses are quite crassly rubbish in terms of providing any interesting dialogue with the song, which i find to be the case on 'didnt you know', besides it being a lame verse as is. 'didnt u know' is a song of one voice plainly addressing another

I told you babe so many times
I would never hurt you
So why you actin so surprised
All you got to do is…
Is show me that you feel the same way I do
Didn’t you know it’s bout me and you?

y'know? no place for joey budden

one variation i will accept tho is that joe buds does sound quite good and live on this beat! so for instance altho jadakiss is a total dumbass on teedra moses' 'you'll never find' i dont mind so much cos jada's throaty burnished bronze is texturally v nice on that golden beat

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Jadakiss's dialogue with Teedra is really great on that song! He totally undercuts her (yeah I will find a better woman) and confirms what she's been calling him out on at the same time. And Jay-Z was obv classic on "Crazy In Love" because it's a love song innit.

I broadly agree re: rap guest verses but the only real dud which springs to mind is the Lumidee remix - it's such an intimate song, it sounded like she was singing it half to herself in her bedroom, no need for anyone to invade it.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago) link

mm yeah that's true. maybe its just that having jada stuck on the end rather than the middle in a to-and-fro is quite a unsatisfyingly sobering downer, and a long way back for you to remember how it might reflect of teedra's; in the end the result isnt so much one of listeners engaging and taking sides but of a presenting a general a generally unhappy bickering relationship malaise

(also i swore i would never be a djdee but gah fucking recognise you dildos)

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

(tht james van der beek graphic is th single funniest thing I have ever seen)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

ha then again whisper it darkly but i might live with ruining '1 thing' just to see peedi crakk jabbering away on totp

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

he says AY-merie! aargh, the pronunciation confusion is back. the rapping sounds hot over the beat especially in that section with Amerie's hollering looped in the background.

in the end the result isnt so much one of listeners engaging and taking sides but of a presenting a general a generally unhappy bickering relationship malaise

I think this was intentional, and pretty much a good way to summarise the relationship in that song. I always picture Jadakiss walking out of the door after he finishes his verse, and Teedra's got no one to sing to any more :( actually, what it suddenly reminds me of right now is Bree van de Kamp's marriage in Desperate Housewives :(

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

jeez sorry I brought it up

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:42 (nineteen years ago) link

in other news dammit this week "1 Thing" drops down a spot on the Hot 100 from 45 to 46.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Is the Hot 100 radio play?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it anything else?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:08 (nineteen years ago) link

"Not coincidentally, Mr. Harrison's schedule is filling up."

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

They changed how the Hot 100 is run a few weeks ago... Digital Downloads are now counted, so it's Airplay + Audience + Digital Downloads.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:31 (nineteen years ago) link

that was a great article.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

"digital downloads"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

that is a good article, but "bares a resemblance"?? c'mon Times!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:48 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, good article. but I don't know what he's talking about, "Get Right" totally has a proper bridge.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago) link

(also i swore i would never be a djdee but gah fucking recognise you dildos)

You made a pledge bcuz of me? How sweet. (what is this referring to btw?)

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Get Right's bridge makes the song for me!

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh i see the links to my blog. Eh. Its not like i'm making money off it, whatever.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

This song is fantastic and all but I don't get why everyone's jizzing all over the production - what makes this special is HER. Take Amerie off the track and what you have is so DJ Shadow-by-numbers that you could put it on that Quannum album and no one would notice.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:46 (nineteen years ago) link

That is part of why Rich Harrison should stay with R&B - his hard funk tracks are great to the extent that they're novel within an R&B track. Mind you this is a bit of a truism innit: Just Blaze sounded boring remixing Beastie Boys too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

If you like DJ Shadow drums in R&B (and I do) you should check out "Bug a Boo (Refugee Camp Remix)" by Destiny's Child featuring Wyclef Jean.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Also Nicole Wray's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from last year more or less fits in this commendable trend. I like that one even better than "1 Thing", I think.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah that song was great, didn't get nearly big enough. esp. the Peedi Crakk remix!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:36 (nineteen years ago) link

weird, before i knew who this was, i would hear this song on wpgc late at night and assume it was just a local DC hit because of the go-go vibe the drums have going.

mat, Monday, 14 March 2005 00:06 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, If I Was Yr Girlfriend was the first thing this made me think of. god i luvved that. who produced it btw?

Cabaret Voltron (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Monday, 14 March 2005 03:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard this track about 12 times over two days in a recent trip to SF on the rental's radio. Need more like this, plz! Is there any live acts with this sound (diva- ladyvox over breaks)? And are my ears/ipod headphones deceiving me or do the gypsies have no homes here, no bass? I guessed the Beyonce connection pretty early on, it's the same structure just the samples have been switched. The ping/pong bits are ace.

caspar (caspar), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Love the song more with every listen. And I just realized what the drums remind me of: Jade's "Don't Walk Away."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 19 March 2005 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

And are my ears/ipod headphones deceiving me or do the gypsies have no homes here, no bass?

Nope, no bass. It's a perfect mp3.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, this song is gorgeous and wonderful.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I said this song was gonna be hot like 2 months ago.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually that was Al. There's always someone more on the ball on ILM.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:22 (nineteen years ago) link

True. In fact I didn't say it til a little over a month ago, it looks like. But I was *thinking it* two months ago ...

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:28 (nineteen years ago) link

S'alright, didn't mean to be policing yr claims! I kinda enjoy discovering stuff and then finding out how long it's been since someone initially mentioned it on ILM (usually about six months).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I knew we would all be talking about music here on ILM when I was 5. I was THAT GOOD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I just thought I had an edge thanks to a supposed "Hot 97 Exclusive"

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:37 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah I kinda wish I'd been so bold as to put money on the fact that everyone would be talking about the new Amerie (and the new Ying Yang Twins) when I first heard them both 3 months ago, because I'd be collecting big right now.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I also predicted that "Candy Shop" would be a big flop. So I owe someone a lot of money.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I should have assumed that a song that allows people to mouth nasty innuendoes to each other while they're dancing would be a hit.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard the remix with Eve last night. It's OK.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:20 (nineteen years ago) link
