Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

SPOILERS

the last one I saw (as I say, 12) was the one where mrs. echolls jumped from the bridge, logan told his dad off at school and veronica was, once again, pesky.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, okay, there's been another one since then.

P2P places now have amateur kylie - veronica mars lookalike as the very top search fr veronica mars. Ban the internet, or do something with it.

qbert (Danny), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Only 2 hours until the episode! Set your VCRs or Tivos or whatever.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:08 (nineteen years ago) link

just waiting for tonight's episode. so who do you guys think killed LILY? The eternal laura palmer question, except without tshirts.

gunther heartymeal, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I killed lillie! BUT this show + twin peaks, pretty similar. though me + drink, pretty unlucid!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:11 (nineteen years ago) link

twin peaks = better (season one of twin peaks anyway)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:19 (nineteen years ago) link

you love her.

qbert (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

this show + twin peaks, pretty similar.

As long as you ignore their genre, plot structure, and the fact that one has an ensemble cast and the other doesn't. They do both take place in towns where crimes are committed and are filmed in front of a live camera crew.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:28 (nineteen years ago) link

both have the investigation of a young exuberant popular teenage girl as a main factor tho and they use the death as a catalyst fr plot and character. twin peaks has the whole small town thing going on which v. mars doesn't have but veronica mars has class wars and paris hilton.

qbert (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:52 (nineteen years ago) link

The exuberant popular girl is dead in Twin Peaks! The Fugitive starts with a death, too -- so did The Incredible Hulk, Murder One, etc. Hamlet, for that matter, and Sunset Boulevard (both of which would be crappy TV shows).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean, they both use some very common tools from the freeware toolbox, but that's what makes it a toolbox. Focusing on those commonalities is like finding Who's The Boss similar to Cheers because they both have "when will they do it" ongoing tension, or Scrubs and Dragnet because they have narrators.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Tonight's episode with the pervo teacher totally reminded me of a certain ilxor.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:50 (nineteen years ago) link

The sweater was distractingly bad, but a decent episode.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:01 (nineteen years ago) link

there really wasn't enough mars vs. mars action. and I agree that veronica is SUCH a pest! I guess that's what it takes to find out the TRUTH. um what is up with all the sick people?

twin peaks was way more dramatic. what with the "DOOO doooo" music that played everytime a scene ended.

gunther heartymeal, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:03 (nineteen years ago) link

okay the exuberant popular girl was poor longhand fr lilly kane and laura palmer are similar in a number of ways. So i agree with the freeware toolkit thing to an extent but the similarities aren't just of setting or background or of just a similar storyline, the hunt fr the killer of a girl.

Twin peaks is 'something + detective genre' in the same way Mars is 'something + teen drama + detective genre'. They both focus on the place and characters within the place rather than just the murder yet the investigation is used as a catalyst fr character development and insight into place which again promotes the influence of things outside the detective plot.

A marlowe movie like the big sleep couldn't carry on after the plot is unravelled (obv that's bad because it's a film and they're supposed to end.), twin peaks did because it had strongly established other elements but this establishing was done through the investigation of laura palmers murder just like v. mars non-detective elements are being established through the investigation to a large/some extent.

Okay a lot of that is rub but i think the way the detective elements are used and blah and lilly kane = laura palmer means that they're pretty similar.

qbert (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Twin Peaks was much more of a soap opera than a detective show, though -- the clues were all but irrelevant to the solving of the crime, and the audience was never led to believe otherwise, what with Coop's mystical Tibetan bottle-knocking method of suspect identification.

And it was much more about the town than the one dead girl -- she provided a focus for the first slightly-less-than-half of the show, but the bulk of even that half dealt with other things. Her murder was the equivalent of the hospital in General Hospital; the investigation was a setting as much as it was a plot element, like Mulder's ongoing quest in The X-Files. (There are bigger differences than this, but they boil down to "Twin Peaks is a take on the traditional night-time soap opera, Veronica Mars isn't," with the plot structures, the lack of episodic closure, the roaming focus on different characters, etc.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 05:00 (nineteen years ago) link

okay i think a lot of that is true about veronica mars. 'more about the town than the girl' but transplant town fr the characters but i have to think it later.

qbert (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 05:57 (nineteen years ago) link

V Mars detecting is usually unrelated to finding out lilly kane's murderer tho. each episode has a single case/problem much in the style of buffy (prolly a load of other things too) which has to be solved but this is unrelated to the finding out of lilly kane's murderer and is therefore part of other stuff going on.

Or, like buffy (prolly a ton of other things), the soap opera elements and character development are brought out through solving problems in her career. That does make it even more of a detective show though which twin peaks isn't but finding the actual murderer of lilly has about as much priority as finding laura's and the bulk of the show is about other things.

qbot (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 06:48 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah this show is nothing like twin peaks (was it me that said that?!) I think (spelled: know) I was drunk when I wrote that.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:13 (nineteen years ago) link

It has way more differences than similarites but i enjoyed the conversation. plus the obv detective and lilly kane blah.

i read a review on imdb that said it was 1/3 buffy, 1/3 twin peaks and 1/3 'the outsiders'. i don't know what the outsiders is unless it's the slicks vs greasers book i read as a kid.

qbert (Danny), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:44 (nineteen years ago) link

watching the cult episode just now. it's good stuff.

johnson (johnson), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:16 (nineteen years ago) link

If all was right with the world, Lost would be struggling for ratings and Veronica Mars would be an international phenomenon. Just sayin, y'all.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Also it totally kills me that Hugh Laurie's HOUSE is on at the same time as this, and is almost as wonderful... I have to tape that on the other tv. And I feel like a traitor to Veronica every time I recommend the show.

On the bright side, House is not hurting for ratings at ALL and is a 100% lock for a second season. And you should all watch it too. If you have Tivos or VCRs and can watch Veronica Mars first, that is.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

the only good thing about lost was the first scene on the beach, post-crash and (say it with me!) JOHN LOCKE.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know, even that was boring. The show has no spark.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I like LOST alright but I have a feeling once the big secrets are revealed it is totally going to turn into a dud. And you're right, it's not fair that Veronica is struggling so much. I know a lot of people that would love this show and they just won't GIVE IT A CHANCE. We need blasting trumpets to announce each episode.

gunther heartymeal, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Very lucky that UPN has been so supportive of the show, but it's a double-edged sword because as a network they really don't have the right image to carry Veronica. I want to break into their offices and start making better promos and some image campaign stuff.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

definitely. i just checked the ratings for last night and they still aren't looking so good. but maybe they are GOOD ENOUGH for upn.

gunther heartymeal, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean, what else doe UPN have -- Kevin Hill? I think the ratings for that may even be worse than the ratings for Veronica.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Kevin Hill is their only other scripted hour-long besides Enterprise. And Enterprise has been cancelled, so I hope that bodes well for VM's chances at a second season.

what happened to BACKUP anyway?

gunther heartymeal, Thursday, 17 February 2005 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

They probably need an animal trainer on set every time he's around, which=$$$

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 18 February 2005 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Tomorrow night! Everyone watch! It's the all important sweeps episode, Alyson Hannigan will be on...

Go on. You know you want to watch it.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 07:01 (nineteen years ago) link

9/8c on UPN, in case you've forgotten.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 07:31 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG! Only 14 hours and 15 minutes.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:45 (nineteen years ago) link

haha! I want to watch it but geography be damned.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I will be so depressed if something so silly as ratings keeps this show from getting a second season. :(
